The Cascade Lady Champions returned to the hardwood on Wednesday night in Cannon County for the first game in 11 days, and it showed on the court as the Lionettes ran away with a 57-21 home victory to snap the visitors two-game winning streak.
Because of the extreme winter storm that came through Tennessee last week, not a single team in District 9-AA was allowed to practice until the following Monday. Lady Champs head coach Janie Demonbreum’s squad struggled to find offense on the road the entire night as stars Kaegan Young and Sophie Ray were held to just seven points apiece for the entire game.
For Cannon County, Abbilyn Teter led the way with a game-high 20 points, and Abi Alexander added 16 points of her own while controlling the flow of the game the entire night.
Her command of the offense helped Cannon County jump out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter, but it was the lack of coherent offense from Cascade that stood out the most. The Lady Champs trailed 17-3 with under two minutes to go in the opening frame, and just looked all out of sorts trying to find a way to get open shots.
It didn’t get any better in the second quarter. The Lionettes outscored the visitors 19-4 to close the first half, going into the locker room with a commanding 36-11 lead.
The second half was more of the same with Cannon County holding Cascade to ten points in the final 16 minutes to pick up a big home district win, 57-21.
Cannon County improves to 15-5 (2-0) and are scheduled to host Chapel Hill on Thursday night in a back-to-back as they continue district play.
Cascade falls to 7-13 (1-3) and are tentatively scheduled to host Community in the second Battle of Bedford on Friday night, LIVE on WZNG The Zinger 100.9 and AM 1400 starting at 5:45 p.m.
