The White County High School Warrior basketball team traveled up the mountain to take on the Stone Memorial Panthers, on Jan. 30, and the Cumberland County Jets, on Feb. 2. The Warriors won both of the previous matchups and were looking to repeat, but winning on the road is usually a much more difficult task.
The Warriors got off to a sluggish start, struggling to score in the game against Stone Memorial. At halftime, the Warriors were down by 10, with the score being 18-8. The Panthers opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run to stretch their lead to 16, but the Warriors finally found their touch and mounted a comeback. The Warriors fought their way back to within 1 but were never able to take the lead late. The final score was 39-46 in favor of the Panthers.
Only three Warriors put up points in the contest. Junior Tripp Pinion led the Warriors with 24, freshman Cole Sims scored 11, and sophomore Lucas Smith scored 4. Junior Gage Stephenson led the Warriors with nine rebounds.
On Feb. 2, the Warriors got off to a similar start against the Cumberland County Jets, falling behind by 10, with the first quarter coming to an end with the score 6-16.
The Jets would get the first bucket of the second quarter, building what would be their biggest lead of the night to 12.
From then, however, it was a totally different game. The Warriors took control and pulled to within 1 as the first half ended. The Warriors picked right back up where they left off to start the second half going on a 14-2 run pulling away and never looking back. The Warriors went on to win by a final score of 52-34.
Tripp Pinion led all scorers with 22 points and led the Warriors with five assists. Cole Sims scored 11 and led the Warriors with seven rebounds and three steals. Junior Lucas Dickerson had 9 points shooting 50 percent from behind the arc. Other Warriors to score points were senior Jackson Young with 4, Gage Stephenson with 4, and Lucas Smith with 2.
Senior Night will be Feb. 9 as the Warriors welcome Signal Mountain to Roy Sewell Gymnasium.
