The Grundy County High School girls’ basketball team routed Forrest High School 61-32 Monday night at Coach Ricky Richards Gym to advance to the semifinals of the District 9AA Tournament.
Kasadee Crabtree and Kallie Parson paced the Lady Jackets (16-7) with 16 and 14 points, respectively, to end the Rockets’ season. The win set up a Tuesday matchup with top-seeded Cannon County at Cascade High School, but results were not available at press time.
Parson led a 28-point first half with 13 points of her own. She netted six shots in the first 16 minutes and hit two free-throws during the contest. Crabtree scored all of her points in the second half on five field goals and a 6-for-7 night at the free-throw line.
Grundy’s defense limited Forrest to just 12 points in the first half. The Rockets’ highest scoring quarter was the third with 11 points, but the GCHS offense buried the visitors with a 32-point barrage in the second half that included seven fourth-quarter points from Tori Layne.
The Lady Jackets ended their regular season with a pair of close losses to Community last week. GCHS fell 49-45 at Community on Friday and 50-42 Saturday at home. The two wins propelled the Viqueens to a second-place finish in the district standings, while Grundy fell to fourth place with its 15-7 record.
Prior to the back-to-back meetings with Community, the Lady Jackets picked up a 62-58 road win over Cascade last Tuesday to split the season’s series with the Champions.
The District 9AA Tournament continues Thursday, Feb. 15 at Cascade High School. Depending on the outcome of Tuesday’s game against Cannon County, the Lady Jackets will play at either 7:30 p.m. in the championship game or at 6 p.m. in the consolation game. The champions and runners-up of the district tournament will gain a berth in the Region 5AA Tournament.
