Editor’s Note: Despite making multiple requests, The Advocate & Democrat received no stats for Sequoyah’s complete boys basketball season. The All-County team is selected on the basis of stats, nominations from coaches and experience from coverage. The Advocate & Democrat plans to release the girls’ basketball All-County team in the March 20 edition.
The 2023-24 boys’ basketball season in Monroe County comes to a close with two teams advancing out of their district tournaments.
Sequoyah, Sweetwater and Tellico Plains combined for 41 wins on the season and 4,777 points scored.
Leading the way in points scored was Chris Alford. The Sweetwater senior ended his season with 650 points — 24.1 points per game — and shot 44% from the floor.
A consistent presence for multiple seasons, Alford finished his year with 190 rebounds, 40 assists, 203 made field goals and 27 steals. The All-County Player of the Year selection, for two seasons in a row, also shot 81% at the line.
Tellico Plains led the county in wins with 20 while also finishing highest in the district standings and District 3-2A tournament. The Bears averaged 64.2 points per game despite rostering only one senior.
With a touch of experience from the year prior, Don Swanson was ready to helm the program. The group improved on last season’s win total by 33% while finishing third in a competitive District 3-2A.
A standout sophomore, Rylan Woods continued to build on his already impressive resume. Tellico’s leading scorer broke 1,000 career points in the District 3-2A tournament while helping the Bears to a 20-9 record.
Woods scored above 20 points consistently throughout the season.
Billy Barr played a significant role in Sequoyah. The Chiefs’ senior was a key figure in an offense that averaged 52.6 points across 26 games.
A standout in basketball and football, Barr left an impact in red and gold.
The lone senior in Tellico, Burgess Tate’s importance to Bears’ basketball cannot be overstated.
The Bears’ leader, both in action and personality, contributed to nearly 50 wins in his career.
As a freshman, Hunter Daffron scored over 200 points. One of the new faces to Wildcats’ varsity basketball, Daffron added on to his successful middle school career with 71 assists, 80 rebounds and 28 steals.
He shot 63% from the line and buried over one-third of his attempts from the floor.
Chadwick Davis played a key role in distributing the ball for Tellico. The sophomore helped to organize and push an offense with four points of attack through 2023-24.
His season helped the program win seven games in district play for the first time since returning from Class A.
With 173 points scored and 71 assists, Campbell Hicks continued his impact in the Sweetwater offense. The senior shot 40% from the floor and buried 36 3-pointers.
Hicks added 2.5 rebounds per game to go with his 23 steals.
KT Hamilton had the ability to score from all over the floor. A vital part of everything the Bears did, Hamilton had the ability to get involved inside while surprising opponents with his rangy shots.
Hamilton’s impact was significant in returning the Bears to the region tournament after a two-year hiatus.
Capable of pushing the floor, Blake Summey featured heavily in Sequoyah’s success. The senior played a vital role on the floor and in leadership for the Chiefs.
Summey was able to appear in five positions for Sequoyah, showing how he developed in the program and led by example.
Cade Houser was a force on the boards in Monroe County. The Sweetwater junior averaged six rebounds a game along with 150 points. Houser finished his season with 156 rebounds.
He also added 30 steals and 17 deflections. Houser cleaned up the defensive glass with 119 defensive rebounds while shooting 35% from the floor and 63% at the line.
