Eaglettes Softball Beats Independence on the Road

The Shelbyville Golden Eaglettes went on the road and  handled the Independence Lady Eagles with ease, 9-4, after five-plus innings on Monday night.

October Dresback was the star of the show at the plate for Shelbyville, going 2-3 at the plate with a walk, a home run, and a game-high three RBIs.

Sammie Brown pitched extremely well in the circle again as well for the Eaglettes, throwing three shutout innings that included only two hits and three strikeouts.

Grace Wood went 5.2 innings for the Lady Eagles, giving up nine hits and three walks, but only three of the nine runs Shelbyville scored were earned due to the six errors Independence fielders’ committed behind Wood.

The game was called due to lightning in the area after Wood got the second out in the top of the sixth inning despite Independence putting across four runs – all unearned – in the bottom of the fifth.

Dresback got the party started for the Eaglettes almost immediately. The first time she stepped up to the plate, she roped a double to drive home the visitor’s first run, then after an error by Independence, the Eaglettes were able to push home the second run of the first inning.

Neither team scored again until Shelbyville’s bats exploded in the third, amassing six runs in the inning to take an 8-0 lead. Things started with, once again, October Dresback. She launched a two-run home run to center field, Sydney Moore followed that up with a double, scoring Bailey Dunn, Independence committed another error that allowed another run to score, and then freshman Mariah Nowlin capped off the inning with a two-RBI single.

The Eaglettes would tack on their ninth run in the top of the fifth before a couple of fielding errors allowed Independence to put up four unearned runs in the home half of the inning against reliever Bailey Dunn.

Dunn threw two complete innings, striking out four batters while only allowing one walk. She did not allow a single hit.

The Eaglettes take the week off for spring break before jumping into district play on April 5th against Lincoln County.
