The Yellow Jackets began a three-game skid last week, falling to South Pittsburg, Sequatchie County and Forrest in consecutive contests.
Grundy (3-6) dropped a 7-4 decision at South Pittsburg last Tuesday. The Jackets and Pirates each tallied 10 hits and three fielding errors in the line score, but a combined four runs in the fifth and sixth innings lifted SPHS to a late victory.
GCHS scored four runs in the third and led 4-3 going into the fifth inning. The Jackets struck first on a sacrifice fly from McGee to plate Knight, and back-to-back-to-back hits from Nunley, Jaxon Woodlee and White gave the visitors their grand advantage.Â
A pair of errors helped South Pittsburg put three on the board in the bottom half of the third, but starting pitcher Woodlee was able to escape the inning with a strikeout to preserve the lead.
The Pirates threatened in the fourth with the bases loaded, and Woodlee was again able to escape trouble with a pair of strikeouts, but the Grundy lead disappeared in the fifth. Stone led off the frame with a double, and Tierney tied the game with an RBI single. Two batters later, Fults hit a sac fly to left to score Tierney.
Leading 5-4, the Pirates tack on two more runs in the sixth to cement their lead. Rector picked up two RBIs on a double to left to give the game its final score.Â
Woodlee received the loss despite striking out five and allowing just two earned runs. Issac Campbell tossed one inning of relief and was charged with two runs.
Offensively, Knight and Woodlee each came away with three hits. McGee, Nunley, Woodlee and White all collected one RBI each.
The Yellow Jackets dropped a heartbreaking 3-1 contest to Sequatchie County in its home opener last Thursday. The Indians scored two runs in the top of the seventh to hand Grundy its second loss in a row.
Sequatchie took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout from Sims, but GCHS starting pitcher Knight settled in after the rocky start and went on to throw six innings with nine strikeouts. After giving up two singles in the first, he yielded just two more hits the entire outing.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a bases-loaded walk. Nunley ripped a two out single to center, Charles Byers singled to right and Colton Rogers drew a walk to load the bases. The Indians went to their bullpen after the walk to Rogers, but Marcom managed to work a full count into an RBI base-on-balls.
The 1-1 deadlock lasted until the top of the seventh inning. With Knight still working on the hill, a pair of GCHS errors put two runners on with no outs. Knight struck out his next batter, and Campbell got a second K after entering to pitch, but a wild pitch and an RBI single from Boston gave Sequatchie its two-run lead in the inning.Â
Grundy saw the tying run come to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with Campbell reaching on an error, but Sequatchie reliever Nelson coaxed a pair of groundouts to short to end the game.
Campbell was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Marcom came away with the Jackets’ lone run batted in.
Grundy entered district play Monday when it hosted Forrest High School in Coalmont. It was another nail biter for the Jackets that saw the lead slip away in the late innings. Despite being out-hit 7-3, the Rockets outscored GCHS 3-2 with all three of their runs coming in the final two innings.
The Yellow Jackets put up a two-spot in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. With two on and two outs, McGee came up with a clutch single to left to plate Foster and Nunley. Woodlee, who pitched all seven innings, held the narrow advantage until the top of the sixth.
A dropped third strike put Forrest’s Baxter at first to lead off the sixth, and a single and two errors on the next play put the Rockets on the board. Woodlee struck out the next batter for the inning’s first out, but FHS got its second run one at-bat later on an RBI groundout. Forrest took the lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Mealer.
Rockets relief pitcher Fuller recorded a three-up, three-down home half of the seventh to slam the door shut on the Jackets.Â
Despite the loss, Woodlee was charged with only one earned run. The right-hander allowed just three hits and struck out five in the otherwise stellar outing.Â
At the plate, Campbell paced the Jackets with a pair of hits. McGee led Grundy in RBIs with two.
Grundy returned the game to Forrest on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. The Jackets visit Cannon County on Monday and host the Lion on Tuesday at GCHS. First pitch for both games is set for 5:30 p.m.
