KINGSPORT — The Science Hill tennis teams once again find themselves on the inside track to a conference championship.
Daniel Haddadin and Shreeyan Papireddy won their doubles match and got the Hilltoppers started on the right foot for Tuesday’s 8-1 triumph at Dobyns-Bennett. The Lady Hilltoppers also cruised to victory, 9-0, over their arch-rival.
Haddadin/Papireddy won 8-1 over Dobyns-Bennett’s Emery Corpstein and Rishab Dey.
“My net game has come a long way,” said Haddadin, a Mount St. Mary’s signee. “I’ve been working a lot with my coaches on my net game, my overheads and my transition points in general.”
Newton Raff/Jackson Temple defeated Adam Krcal/Adam Fields 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, while Cooper Weems/Joe Luna won 8-0 over Aidan Ponasik/Noah Meade.
EMERY’S EPIC BATTLE
The No. 1 boys singles match between Haddadin and Corpstein, a rematch of last year’s region championship won by Haddadin, lived up to the hype. After going 6-4, 4-6 in the first two sets, Corpstein won the tiebreaker 10-8 to score Dobyns-Bennett’s lone team point.
“That was way too close,” Corpstein joked. “But I’m happy with the way I played overall. I really problem solved a lot mostly, got down 4-1 in the first set and realized what I needed to do. I formulated a game plan that carried me to come back and win that first set, tried to incorporate some other things in that second set, but I just had to invert to what won me that first one.”
Science Hill swept the rest of the singles matches, Papireddy winning 6-4, 6-4 over Dey at No. 2.
Raff defeated Krcal 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3, with Temple defeating Ponasik 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. Weems scored the No. 5 win 6-1, 6-0 over Fields. Luna won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 over Meade.
LADY ‘TOPPERS ON TOP
Madison Berry/Lizzy Luna won their No. 1 doubles match over Sydney Spillett/Allison Fields 8-5, while Science Hill took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches 8-2.
Ensley Baker/Sofia Markson defeated Addison England/Mulan Ma at No. 2, and Julie Johnson/Ellen Hong won over Vicky Li/Ellie Jackson.
Berry (6-3, 6-2) defeated Spillett at No. 1, with No. 2 Luna topping Fields 6-1, 6-3. No. 3 Baker and No. 6 Amelia Irizarry won their matches over England and Jackson respectively 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 and No. 5, Markson and Johnson defeated Ma and Li 6-1, 6-2.
