Huntland's Caleb Maxwell steps forward to deliver a pitch in this file photo from earlier in the season. Maxwell pitched a complete game with three strikeouts, three hits, one walk, one earned run and one unearned run allowed for the Hornets Thursday in their 2-1 loss at Community High School.
The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Community Vikings 2-1 on the road Thursday for their eighth loss of the season.
The Vikings took the lead in the middle innings of the low-scoring contest with the Hornets not being able to find a tying score late.
Neither team got a runner past first base until the top of the fourth when Matthew Dickson led off the inning with a double for Huntland. However, a pop out, a groundout and a strikeout followed to strand Dickson in scoring position.
The Vikings also got a leadoff double to start their portion of the fourth inning with an RBI single a few batters later breaking the scoreless tie and giving Community a 1-0 edge.
The Vikings loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth on a walk and two hit batters, and a two-out error led to a run scoring to make it a 2-0 game late.
The Hornets were able to get on the board in the top of the sixth as Dickson hit a one-out single, stole second and ultimately came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Caleb Maxwell. Landon Kerr advanced to second on the sacrifice fly after drawing a walk earlier in the frame, but he wouldn’t advance any farther as the potential tying run.
The Hornets were retired in order in the top of the seventh as they lost by one.
Maxwell pitched a complete game for the Hornets with three strikeouts, three hits, one walk, one earned run and one unearned run allowed.
With the loss, the Hornets moved to 7-8 on the season.
