KINGSPORT — The Dobyns-Bennett softball team nearly won by run rule before holding off a furious rally on senior night Monday.
Third baseman Claudia Maness caught a Unicoi County runner trying to advance to third for the final out, as the Lady Indians triumphed 13-10 at Indian Highland Park.
It marked career win No. 302 for Andy Hubbard, D-B’s all-time winningest softball coach. He reached the 300 mark against Gibbs on April 13.
Allie McConnelee and Catie Zani both went 4-for-5 at the plate for the Tribe, who collected 17 hits to Unicoi County’s 13. Hailey Porter and McConnelee (4 runs) each hit a solo home run and a double.
Sophie Dean, Julianne Tipton (4 RBIs) and Maness all collected a pair of hits. Dean also earned the win, striking out four while allowing only four earned runs.
Miley Woodward went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Lady Blue Devils. Aaliyah Engle and Kynzie Jones each hit 2-for-4.
Porter’s home run had given D-B a 13-4 lead in the sixth inning. But Kianna Woodward, Miley Woodward and Engle all drove in runs during Unicoi County’s six-run seventh inning.
Greeneville 14, Volunteer 7
CHURCH HILL — Kyla Jobe homered twice and finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored from her leadoff spot for Greeneville. Kaley Garland went 4-for-5 with a home run and two doubles, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Madison Carpenter, Lauren Million and Leah Phillips all had three hits. Lydia Darnell, Stoan Rader and Brynlee Jones had two hits apiece, with Phillips getting the win.
Abby Fisher and Haley Russell both went 3-for-4 and batted in two runs for Volunteer. Jayden Ford and Jenna Thomas both had two hits.
Claiborne 16, Cherokee 4
NEW TAZEWELL — Allie Jones struck out nine and pitched a three-hit shutout for Claiborne. Jacey Ferguson drove in four runs with her home run and triple, while Kate Combs hit a solo shot.
Kylie Rines singled and drove in two runs for Cherokee.
Hancock County 17, Thomas Walker 0
SNEEDVILLE — Calyn Seal struck out four and pitched a one-hitter for the Lady Indians, who scored 15 runs in the second inning despite collecting just three hits themselves.
Sophie Lawson had Thomas Walker’s only hit.
Elizabethton 11, John S. Battle 0
BRISTOL, Va. — Lela Byrd struck out five and pitched a two-hit shutout for the Lady Cyclones, while also driving in five runs with a double and a three-run blast.
M Johnson went 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, with Emma O’Quinn adding two hits of her own.
Cloudland 8, Sullivan East 0
ROAN MOUNTAIN — Reagan Turbyfill pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out five for the Lady Highlanders, who pulled away with a six-run third inning despite just four hits of their own.
Saharra McKinney’s grand slam played a major factor in that, and she finished 3-for-4.
Addison Holly doubled twice for the Lady Patriots, who left nine on base.
BASEBALL
West Ridge 7, Elizabethton 6
BLOUNTVILLE — Alex Ireson’s two-out RBI single capped six-run fifth inning for West Ridge, which had fallen behind 6-1 before rallying to victory. Brayden Barr, Kas Click and Ireson all had two hits for the Wolves, and Peyton Maines added a double.
Kade Oliver (2 RBIs) went the distance to get the win.
Jack Blevins went 2-for-3 with three RBIs from the nine-hole for Elizabethton. Steven Meadows added two hits, and Bryson Rowland tripled.
Eastside 11, Patrick Henry 5
COEBURN — Jed McCoy hit 3-for-4 with a double, driving in four runs to lead the Spartans to victory. Will Johnson (2-for-2), Clay Ward and Tanner Perry all scored twice. Keldan Hamilton and Luke Trent drove in three runs apiece. Perry also got the win after pitching the first two frames.
Alex Brown doubled for Patrick Henry.
Greeneville 13, Volunteer 1
CHURCH HILL — Will Harmon and Kaine Ricker both went 2-for-4, while matching Colton Richards and Eli House with two RBIs. Maddox Bishop drove in three runs and tripled for the Greene Devils, who scored seven runs in the sixth to pull away.
Carson Quillen struck out five over five innings to get the win.
Connor Haynes singled and scored to lead Volunteer offensively.
Cornerstone Christian 7, Rye Cove 5
ABINGDON — Brady McNulty struck out eight to get the win for the Lions, while Zach McNulty went 2-for-4 wit ha walk and Evan Denton hit 3-for-4.
Will Rollins batted 3-for-4 with a home run to lead the War Eagles.
Tennessee High 14, David Crockett 1
JONESBOROUGH — Preston Feagins went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer to lead the Vikings, who got two hits and three runs from Bryson Hutton. Kaleb Feathers struck out five in five innings of work to get the win.
Nolan Street singled and scored a run to lead Crockett.
