The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs 10-4 on the road Wednesday for their sixth loss of the season.
The score was kept close early with the Lady Hornets taking the lead in the middle innings, but a seven-run frame from the Lady Bulldogs in the bottom of the fifth put the game out of reach for Huntland.
The Lady Bulldogs were the first team on the board with a trio of two-out singles resulting in a pair of runs for them in the bottom of the first.
The Lady Hornets got their first run of the contest on the top of the third as Bailey Morris came through with a two-out RBI double to score Lily Jackson from third base.
The Lady Hornets then flipped the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as Camerin Davis hit a game-tying RBI triple, and Jackson followed with an RBI single to score Davis from third to give Huntland a 3-2 edge.
That lead lasted until the bottom of the fifth when the Lady Bulldogs scored seven total runs in the inning to take a 9-3 lead late.
The Lady Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with a hit batter allowing the lead runner to walk home to push the deficit up to 10-3.
The Lady Hornets made up some ground in the top of the seventh as Bella Smith and Hadley Gardner hit consecutive two-out singles with Smith scoring off of an error following Gardner’s single.
However, the Lady Hornets weren’t able to produce any more runs in the final inning as they lost by six.
Morris pitched the first 5 1-3 innings for the Lady Hornets with four strikeouts, 12 hits, one walk, six earned runs and three unearned runs allowed.
Analyn Riddle recorded the final two outs for Huntland in relief with two hits, three walks and one run allowed.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets moved to 6-6 on the season.
They will next play Thursday at Grundy County High School. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
