The Hampton softball team was unable to extend the season on Monday evening.
The Lady Bulldogs were unable to over an early deficit in a 15-5 decision to Chuckey-Doak in the District 1-2A tournament at Chuckey Doak. With the loss, Hampton’s season comes to a close.
The Lady Black Knights jumped out early with four runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the third.
Hampton, however, kept battling.
In the top of the fourth, Briley Davis reached base on a dropped third strike, and Lauren Smith hit a single to get baserunners aboard. Lacey Smith hit a single to plate a run while Dru Nickles hit a double to right field to plate Emma Hughes as Hampton put two runs on the board in the frame.
After the Lady Bulldogs held strong defensively, Hannah Smith and Maleah Scalf hit singles to open the fifth, and Mallory Lamb hit a single to plate Scalf to get Hampton back on the board.
Chuckey-Doak answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.
The Lady Bulldogs got back on the board as H. Smith hit a triple that scored L Smith and A Guy. The Lady Black Knights, however, secured the win in the bottom of the sixth.
H. Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Hampton at the plate. L. Smith, Nickles, and L. Smith each added two hits a piece. Lamb tallied an RBI along with Lacey Smith and Nickles.
