Carter Denies Lady Pioneers in Class AAA Sectional
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Carter scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held off a David Crockett rally in the top of the seventh to score a 5-4 victory over the Lady Pioneers in a Class AAA sectional game Friday night.

Crockett (22-16) was playing in its first state sectional contest since 1992 and bidding for its first-ever state tournament berth.

Run-scoring doubles in the first and second innings gave Carter a 2-0 lead, but Chelsea Willliams’ two-run homer to center in the fourth brought the Lady Pioneers even.

Julie Maupin roped a solo homer in the next inning to give Crockett a 3-2 lead going to the bottom of the sixth.

Chloe Hicks bunted in the go-ahead run and Gracie Miller upped the lead to 5-3 with a single. Lexi Hawkins drove home a run in the seventh, but the Lady Pioneers could get no closer.

Carter pitcher Malaney Etherton scattered eight hits and struck out eight in going the distance.

Maupin finished 3-for-4 with a double and home run.

Crockett returns its entire roster next season sans pitcher Cara Wilson.
