Region tourneys for diamond teams open today
Columbia Daily Herald Sports
The TSSAA postseason for spring sports moves a week closer to the Spring Fling in Memphis next week by having region competition this week in baseball, soccer and softball.
The diamond sports, which were slowed down across the state by the heavy storm fronts, will have region semifinal games Monday and the finals on Wednesday. The soccer semifinals will be Tuesday.
Maury County teams still alive include:
Baseball - Columbia Central, Columbia Academy and Mt. Pleasant
Soccer - Columbia Central, Columbia Academy
Softball - Columbia Academy.
Area teams include:
Baseball - Richland, Cornersville, Marshall County
Soccer - Richland, Page (incomplete)
Softball - Chapel Hill, Summertown, Marshall County, Loretto.
The baseball agenda includes at least two day games as Mt. Pleasant plays Richland at 3 p.m. at Sam Davis Stadium in Pulaski and Columbia Central host Murfreesboro Oakland at 3 p.m.
The Columbia Academy baseballers host Cornersville and the CA softballers play at Chapel Hill. Both games begin at 6 p.m.
On Tuesday the Central soccer team plays at Murfreesbor Oakland and Columbia Academy will visit the District 11-A champ, likely Richland. The 11-A finals will be played today.
Monday's and Tuesday's games are do-or-die for all teams, but those who advance to the region finals will still advance to Friday's sectionals.
The 2003 postseason marks the first time that the TSSAA will qualify eight teams for the Spring Fling in Division1, thus it sets the tempo for perhaps a different mindset on region championship day for some coaches.
