Football is not the only fall sport kicking off
Kevin Rogers- Daily Herald Sports Writer
While football squads got most of the attention during the fall sports seasons, local prep teams are also getting ready to compete in cross country, golf, girls soccer and volleyball.
Because not all of the schools compete in each of the aforementioned sports, the Class A and Class AA schools are combined in the same district for classification purposes.
All of Maury County's smaller TSSAA high schools are members of Region 4-A-AA.
Joining Culleoka in District 7-A-AA are Cascade, Chapel Hill, Cornersville, Eagleville, Giles County, Huntland, Marshall County, Moore County, Richland and Unionville.
District 8-A-AA schools include Clifton, Collinwood, Columbia Academy, Fairview, Franklin Page, Hampshire, Lewis County, Loretto, Mt. Pleasant, Perry County, Santa Fe, Summertown and Wayne County.
Class AAA members Columbia Central and Spring Hill will compete against the same schools they face in other sports except football.
Central is in Region 4-AAA and District 8-AAA with Coffee County, Franklin County, Lawrence County, Lincoln County, Shelbyville and Tullahoma.
Spring Hill will compete in District 11-AAA and Region 6-AAA with newcomer Hickman County, Brentwood, Centennial, Franklin, Hillsboro, Hillwood and Overton.
All of the county schools compete in volleyball, while Columbia Central, Columbia Academy and Spring Hill each field girls soccer teams.
Golf teams have proliferated in recent years for girls and boys, and cross country is also a viable option in which many prep athletes may excel.
Action under the Friday night lights will draw many people to watch gridiron contests this fall, but the cross country, golf, girls soccer and volleyball teams in Maury County will be fighting just as hard for a state championship.
Most of the squads will begin their seasons next week.
