GREENEVILLE — Science Hill was on top of its game to defeat Greeneville 4-0 for its sixth straight Region 1-2A championship at the Greene County Tennis Complex.
Newton Raff and Cooper Weems led the Hilltoppers to the overwhelming victory with a pair of shutout wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Raff got the better of the Greene Devils’ Nick Thomas 6-0, 6-0 and Temple won by the same score over Ace Patel.
Cooper Weems added to the romp with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dominic Tweed at No. 5 singles.
“We had a really good day. I was proud of the boys as we came out, took care of business and played like I hoped we would,” Science Hill coach Kelly Lane said. “Everybody was on top of their games today.”
Shreeyan Papireddy finished it off at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jack Lampe.
“Shreeyan had a great match and played really good tennis today,” Science Hill coach Kelly Lane said. “He’s likely to step up and be No. 1 in our lineup next season. It’s really promising to see him step up and play some good tennis in the postseason.”
Science Hill’s current No. 1 player Daniel Haddadin was leading his match 6-5 over Greeneville’s Jackson Weems when the match was called with no need for doubles.
The Hilltoppers now advance to the sectional round, needing just one more win to return to the state tournament for a fifth straight time, excluding the COVID-19 season of 2020 when the season was cancelled.
