Eagles’ Wisener to showcase tennis skills

Douglas High School tennis star Ian Wisener will continue his career at Alabama-Huntsville, as he signed with the Chargers during a Wednesday ceremony in the DHS library. Supporting Wisener’s decision are front row from left, Terry Gilbreath, Douglas head coach; and Scott Bonds, Douglas principal/athletic director; back row from left, Wisener’s grandparents, Tom and Doris Gamble; his sister, Isabella; his parents, Stephanie and David; his brother, Alex; Greg Henderson, Albertville tennis coach; and his grandparents, Dot and Jack Danielson.

Ian Wisener, a senior at Douglas High School, signed a national letter of intent on Wednesday to play tennis for the University of Alabama in Huntsville, coached by Daniel Finn.

Wisener enters his senior season ranked No. 5 in the state of Alabama. He has several county singles and doubles titles, several area singles and doubles titles and is the current Alabama 4A state doubles champion with Michael McLaughlin.

McLaughlin is a freshman playing for the LeTourneau (Texas) University tennis team.

Wisener trains with Greg Henderson, of Life Point Tennis in Albertville, and with the coaching staff at Athletic Club of Alabama in Huntsville.

David Wisener, Ian’s father and Douglas High School’s volunteer coach, said, "Ian works as hard as any student-athlete in the area, whether it’s in tennis or in the classroom.

“He has been fortunate in that he has a great family support system, a supportive principal and athletic director (Scott Bonds), a good high school coach in Terry Gilbreath and a supportive central office staff.

“Additionally, Greg Henderson has been a huge influence in his game. Greg has been coach and mentor to Ian since Ian started playing at age 10.

“Ian's style of play, his technique and his love and passion for the sport can all be traced back to Greg. We give a great deal of credit to Greg for Ian’s success on and off the court.”

David Wisener said the Douglas tennis program has been fortunate, as his son is the third boys player in the last three years to advance to the college level.

“Ian has been a contributing member of Douglas tennis and has helped the team earn five straight trips to state, as well as clinching the county tennis title three years in a row,” David Wisener said. “We look forward to another exciting year in high school tennis.”

Ian Wisener’s excellent work ethic also applies to the classroom.

He is the senior class treasurer and is ranked in the top two academically. A member of the math team, he has received several academic awards.
