One of the best kickers to come through Moulton signed his letter-of-intent to play at the next level last week.
Lawrence County’s Caden Lee signed a scholarship to play football at Huntingdon college in Montgomery. In his two years with the Red Devils, Lee broke nearly every kicking record at Lawrence County
However, the senior didn’t even start kicking in football until his junior year.
“It took me a lot of convincing,” Lee said. “I had a lot of friends on the football team and they'd always told me to just do it. At the end of the day, I was playing club soccer at that time and my biggest concern was that getting caught in the way, or football getting caught in the way of that.”
Lee said then-coach Trent Walker had been trying to get him to play for a while, but he finally caved in his junior year. Once he started, he said football just stole his heart.
“ I love to score. I loved to play striker in soccer, anything forward I would score,” he said. “And football kind of stole my heart because it was all the good parts about soccer without the running.”
He said that he had never even watched a football game before he started kicking for the Red Devils. He got his first start against Russellville in 2023 and fell in love with it.
“ After my first season, I joined with Mike McCabe at One On One Kicking because at that point I realized I was going to be doing this,” he said.
Lee said joining One On One Kicking was a game-changer and that combined with work in the offseason allowed him to blossom. He graduates as the Red Devils leader in points kicked, PAT’s, field goals made and consecutive extra points – his 51-consecutive going back to Oct. 2023.
“ We keep on finding new things every single day where the community appreciates us. Like, we went to the Guthrie's the other day and my picture was just up on the wall, it was insane,” Lee said.
So when he reached out to Huntingdon, they invited him down for a visit and he found his new home down in Montgomery.
“ I had been doing my research on them and new they are a great program. They've been USA South Conference Champions seven out of the past 10 years. So I knew they were really good, and would push me to be a really good player and a better man,” Lee said. “I went there and I met the coaches and I fell in love with them.”
Lee said he wanted to pave a new path for the modern kicker in Moulton and hopes younger players see his scholarship as an open door.
“I just want to be a role model to all these kids,” he said. “I've had all these kids come to me and say how much they wanted to be kickers.”
After football, he plans on becoming a chemical engineer and will stay at Huntingdon for as long as their pre-chemical tract lasts. After, he plans on transferring to Alabama or Auburn to complete it.
