College basketball teams aren't the only ones playing in a big tournament this week.
Twenty teams from four states will take over Reid Park Annex for five days in the Tucson Conquistadores Lancer Baseball Classic hosted by Salpointe Catholic.
Granted, it's not as big as the NCAA tournament, but it should still be fun.
The action begins today at 1 p.m. and continues through Friday night. The first three days consist of pool play starting at 1 p.m. each day.
Bracket play opens up Thursday afternoon, and there will be two semifinal games at 7 p.m. The winners will meet in the championship Friday at 7 p.m.
Here's a look at three interesting matchups in pool play:
• Today: Mountain View vs. Sahuaro, 1 p.m.: Mountain View finished second in the tournament last year and has won four of its last five games.
The Mountain Lions are led by senior Graham Spraker, who is batting .500 and has 16 hits through 10 games.
Sahuaro has lost only once in the last six games, and junior Alex Verdugo is batting .520 and has a team-high 13 hits to go with 37 strikeouts in 21 innings on the mound.
• Tuesday: Salpointe vs. Marana, 7 p.m.: The host Lancers have also won four of their last five and are still making a case to be one of the top teams in Southern Arizona with University of Arizona commit Michael Hoard leading the way with a team-high 10 extra-base hits.
Marana had lost consecutive games but is coming off a 4-3 win against Cienega.
• Wednesday: Ironwood Ridge vs. Cienega, 7 p.m.: The high-scoring Nighthawks are undefeated heading into the tournament and won the Cowboy Up Classic last month. But they will have a tough test if they have to face Cienega left-hander Jake Repavich, who is 2-1 and coming off back-to-back complete-game wins. The junior last pitched March 5.
