Jake BaconThe Northland Preparatory Academy girls volleyball team opened their postseason play on a positive note Thursday, sweeping 13th-seeded Tombstone (9-6) in three sets, 27-25, 25-7, 25-9.
The fourth-seeded Spartans (10-3) did not qualify for the Division IV playoffs last season.
The Spartans will next play fifth-seeded Thatcher today at 4 p.m.
Leading the Spartans on the offense is junior outside hitter Scottie Manson, who totaled 163 kills this season. Manson also leads NPA with 54 service aces.
Defensively, senior middle blocker Hailey Phoenix tallied 24 solo blocks and assisted on 50.
NPA’s biggest competition is the top-seeded, undefeated Northwest Christian (11-0) Crusaders, who the Spartans did not play in the regular season.
Also in the tourney is last year’s Division IV state champion, the third-seeded Red Rock (Sedona) High School. The Scorpions (9-2) beat the Crusaders last year for the state title.
