Safford’s Chance Rios stays on top of Tempe Prep’s William Colbert for the win by pin in the second period Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs lost to the Knights, 51-9.
SAFFORD — A multi turned into a dual match for the Bulldogs.
Both Globe and Tucson Amphitheater didn’t show for Wednesday’s scheduled four-team multi with host Safford and Tempe Preparatory.
“The other teams called ahead and said they didn’t have this match on the schedule,” Safford coach Herman Andrews said.
The result was the first ever meeting of the two teams. The Knights dominated the Bulldogs to take the victory, 51-9.
“It didn’t look like we were ready to wrestle today,” Andrews said.
At 106 pounds, Safford’s Zach Sias was pinned by Elias Gonzales in the second period. Mike Quiroz, at 113, lost to Tempe Prep’s Paul Gonzales on points, 11-0.
The Bulldogs forfeited at 120 before Anthony Ontiver lost to Jared Savage, 5-1. And Safford’s Mich McBride lost to Marcus Whitmore in the second period on a pin.
Safford’s two wins on the afternoon came from Chance Rios, at 138, with a second period pin of William Colbert; and Marcus Aguinaga won, 5-4, over Jesus Guiteriez in the 195-pound class.
“I tried to shoot in and get a take down,” Rios said. “I wanted to pin fast so we could beat these guys.”
Safford’s Collen Brown was pinned with just 0.8 seconds left in the third period by Mathew Bayliss at 145 pounds. George Manyfield for Safford lost to Brandon McQueen, 11-5. Charles Manyfield picked up a win by forfeit.
At 170, Safford’s Adrain Molina was pinned in the second period by Marquis Ysles. Gabe Romero for Safford lost by an early first period pin to Banyon Seweingya at 220, and at 285 Drew Hardesty was pinned in the third period by Angel Landobazo.
