Field goal gives Greenwood lift

— The Greenwood Bulldogs did it to Camden Fairview again.

For the second consecutive year, the Greenwood Bulldogs rallied from a big deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Cardinals in the playoffs. It’s the fourth time the Bulldogs have beaten the Cardinals in five seasons.

Last year, Greenwood rallied from 14 points down in the final five minutes of the Class 5A state championship game to defeat the Cardinals. This year, the Bulldogs rallied from 21 points down to beat Camden Fairview 34-31 with a 27-yard field goal on the final play of the game.

Behind backup quarterback Jerry Moorehead, Camden Fairview built a 28-10 lead in the first half, then extended it to 21 points with a 31-yard field goal by Isai Quiroz late in the fourth quarter.

Greenwood came right back to score 59 seconds later when Hayden Smith threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Drew Morgan.

After stopping the Cardinals on a fourth-and-1 from the Camden Fairview 40, Greenwood got within 31-24 with Smith found a wide-open Jansen Stein for a 21-yard touchdown pass on third-and-8.

Greenwood tied the game at31-31 with 3:37 left in the game when Smith passed to Justin Sunde, who took the ball into the end zone from 12 yards out.

Adam McFain then intercepted a Jerry Moorehead pass at midfield and returned the ball to the Camden Fairview 14 with 1:11 left. Greenwood ran the clock down to under two seconds before McFain, after waiting through two Camden Fairview timeouts, made the game-winner.

Greenwood scored on its first two possessions to take a 10-0 lead when Smith threw a 6-yard pass to Sunde and McFain kicked a 30-yard field goal.

The Cardinals then broigt in Moorehead to run their “Wildcard” offense, and the junior responded by hitting Dominique Reed with a 90-yard touchdown pass.

Moorehead also scored from 2 yards out and 4 yards out to push Camden Fairview to a 21-10 advantage.

The lead swelled to 28-10 when Moorehead threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to William Dever with only seven seconds remaining in the first half.

For Greenwood, Smith finished 23 for 32 for 273 yards and 4 touchdowns, and Drew Morgan caught 8 passes for 103. Sunde caught 9 passes for 87 yards for the Bulldogs.
