After losing their senior night due to injuries to the Augusta Red Devils, the Cedar Ridge Timberwolves will get to play at home in the first round of the 8-man state playoffs and honor the seniors this Friday.
Augusta canceled its season back in October because of a lack of health players. Cedar Ridge, which finished second in its conference, will host Woodlawn in the first round of the state playoffs. This gives Cedar Ridge a chance to honor their seniors on the football field.
“We didn’t get to play Friday night with Augusta being banged up,” Cedar Ridge coach Scott Morgan said. “Our guys didn’t get a senior night. That was going to be our last home game. Now, that we’ve gotten this home playoff game, it’s going to give them a senior night in front of our fans. It’s even more important for that reason.”
On Friday, the Timberwolves gathered as a team at an assistant coach’s home to have a dinner and watch Woodlawn and Brinkley play their game.
Morgan said Woodlawn will be a tough opponent.
“They are a good team,” he said. “We’re a good team. They are physical. They’ve won a lot of games. They are similar to a lot of teams that we’ve played. They remind me a lot of Rector. They’ve got some good backs that can make things happen. They are big up front. They like to ground and pound for the most part and be physical.
“We’ve seen multiple teams like that. For the most part, we’ve handled it well. We hope we get to do the same thing on Friday. At this time of the year, all the teams are good. We’re looking forward to getting the chance to go and play.”
Morgan said it’s huge to play in the playoffs at home.
“Anytime you get the home-field advantage, it’s huge,” he said “One of goals all year was to play a home playoff game in front of our fans.”
Woodlawn enters the game at 6-3. The Bears lost to Brinkley 18-12 in the regular-season finale. Their other two losses came to Midland (26-0) and Strong (52-14).
Cedar Ridge enters the game at 9-1. The Timberwolves’ lone loss came to Midland, 34-6, on Oct. 18.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Newark on Friday.
