  2. I'll be calling this game tomorrow night on 93.9 FM and have a ton of respect for both of these Coaching staffs. Some of you folks saying that Oakland's staff will "out coach" Whitehaven don't know those guys. We're talking about two extremely talented teams and two excellent staff's. This game will come down to who makes the fewest mistakes, PERIOD! This will be the first time all season Oakland has walked on the field and didn't have more talent than the team on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Whitehaven has a ton of next level talent, just like Oakland has. Penalties and Turnovers will decide this game! Coaching and talent will not. Who is better prepared? That will decide this one. You're dealing with 15-18 year old kids and you never know week to week what your gonna get. For those of you saying Whitehaven will get outcoached: Please listen to this interview I had with Rodney Saulsberry back in October and let me know if you still fill that way. Coach Harman has been with Coach Saulsberry since High School. Those guys know football! I call the staff assessment even! Here is the interview I had with Coach Saulsberry. His interview is at the 50 minute mark of this show if you'd like to skip ahead: Rodney Saulsberry on The Friday Main Event

  3. Wish my Jackets were there tomorrow, but congrats to the two teams that are. I don’t think Haywood knows what they are about to face. You can watch film all day long but seeing Greeneville in person is different. This year’s Greeneville team is way better then the one that beat Springfield last year. This Greeneville team may be the best in the state regardless of classification. Greeneville’s offense will be the most balanced that the Tomcats have faced this season. I think Haywood has a chance to keep it close longer than most, but Greeneville will just keep coming. I think the Devils’ defense will contain the run enough to force Haywood to throw more than they want. I also think that since this is this group of seniors last game, that Greeneville will keep their foot on the gas for the majority of the game. I think the Devils win 42-14.

  4. Sounds like a lot of people base their opinions of how good a player is on stats and whether they’ve been getting recognized. Let me tell you this, nowadays many of these 4-5 stars that are being rated aren’t better than some 2 stars. So you can throw around East-West All-Star game and Mr. Football contender but those don’t mean a thing. I already mentioned that they are good players but stop throwing out individual recognition to prove that they are better than other players. Because I’ll tell you this, Whitwell will come out Saturday and have the better athletes on the field. And btw, they aren’t the best players in 1A. You’ll see who one of the best players in 1A on Saturday. I’m done commenting on whose players are better because better teams still lose too. It’s who comes out and performs the best. Not who the better player is.

  5. Good post. Coach Ryan is a good coach. He knows the game inside-out. He might as well coach every aspect of the game from defense to offense to special teams. He just knows the game. But, not to take anything away from him, he did have very high caliber players during his coaching tenure. He’s coached some very good players. Not just because I played for him either. But regardless he is a good coach. And yes we have been to state the past 3 years but that’s the difference between us GB fans. We really expect to be good. Years past, they were playing to get past the 3rd round. They weren’t playing to go win it all. That’s what GB expects now. Put the best players on the field in the right position, coach the right way, and give everything you have and go win a gold ball. If that’s not everyone’s mentality, then you have a losing mentality. We just expect more. With the caliber players we have, we have the right to be upset that we don’t have another shot at a gold ball. But that’s how it goes. You have to go earn it. And we didn’t earn it this past Friday.

  6. His name is Tyler Hunter. He is Dr. Hunter's youngest son. (Dr. Hunter is the head principal at Whitehaven) Tyler has been playing on varsity since he was a freshman. As a freshman he was a 5'-10", 215 lb. wrecking ball of a fullback. He's played NG, DT, LS, OLB, MLB, DE, FB, and TE. He wears #5. He still plays all of those positions, it just depends on what the DC needs. He's been the DC's 'swiss army knife' for 4 years now. He's obviously smart enough to know all of those positions and he's one tough hombre'. He's got about 7 offers to MTSU types of schools. He will be a coaches joy wherever he goes, He's been a scholar athlete for a while now.

  11. yea that was a killer for us...gotta get that ball man. Turnovers can change a game real fast. You guys scored quickly after our turnovers. I loved watching your defensive ends play...fast and physical. Greeneville has a beast defensive end number 55 i think. Lots of size and speed on the field tomorrow

  12. Just a math thought. HC is giving up 17.8 points per game (very good) over 14 games. Greeneville is scoring at 50.6 points per game. So we are going to hold the Devils with a two time Mr. FB at QB, 2 D1 wide commits, a 3rd wide committed to UT as a long snapper to 20 pnts. On the other hand you are going to score almost 7 points over your season average 35.7 points (strong) against a D that is giving up 7.4 points a game. Makes sense to me your prediction.

  17. They have faced some good players. I guarantee you the Whitwell kids are as good as any they have faced. They have about 5-6 outstanding players on that team. Quite possibly the most talented team in 1A.

  22. Brother Martin is supposed to have four returning state champs this year. But they usually bring excellent wrestlers at every weight. Actually they typically bring two squads to Blackhorse each year. Can't imagine how big that wrestling room must be. Connor Hoffman.....113/120 (champ at 106) Dan Croy……………….132 (2x champ) Patrick Evans...……...145 Mack Brown...………..285

  35. This team has played nowhere near what they're capable of, and they're still winning games against the defending state champs and state runner-up.... Saturday's game against Westview will be fun to watch... if we keep turning the ball over like we have, Westview will beat us 15+... if we take care of it, it'll be a ball game.

  36. @WingoVFL dreams about cornersville beating Whitwell
    1 point
  37. Nope. You have the advantage of hindsight in your assessment of the game, and how it was lost. If GB was able to convert just one of three fourth down attempts and score, you would be praising the coach for believing in his team, and the courage to not settle for a field goal. Whitwell stopped all three attempts, and deserve the credit for doing so. Defense wins championships is the old adage, and whether it translates into a championship or not, defense won the game for Whitwell. Despite all the praise (well earned) for their offense "coming through" when they had to...if they don't stonewall GB on the fourth downs, the last two miraculous drives don't matter. Football is a team game, and the coaches are an integral part of the team... GB didn't lose because of "stupid decisions" they lost because Whitwell did what they had to do on the field, when they had to do it, on both sides of the ball.

  39. I can see pros and cons of both staying the night prior and coming up the morning of. However, it’s interesting that Cornersville is approx. 140 mi from Cookeville & Whitwell is about 75 mi from Cookeville and it’s the Dawgs coming in the morning. There’s something to say about sleeping in your own bed (and not in a hotel with 35 teenage buddies). Anyway, safe travels to both. P.S. - Tha tigers looks pretty big and fast on film. I was impressed with what I saw. However, I saw the CornDogs live & in color on Paul’s Turf and they are the best defensive team I’ve ever witnessed in 1A football. They play assignment football. Quick to the ball and FIZ-UH-KOOL. I expect a great, great game.

  40. Alright I have been sitting back and reading all the comments from both sides and I'm giving congratulations to both teams for making it to the title game. When you consider all you have to go through to get to this point it's quite an accomplishment and that's saying the least. Both teams have the motivation and the where with all to take home the coveted Gold Ball. It's the chance of a lifetime for all these fine young men. All the sacrifice and hard work along with some good fortune has brought this meeting of these two teams to the Pinnacle of 1A football. The chance to play for a State Championship. In all of this, there has to be a winner and a loser. Now I'm not PC at all so I say that there is going to be a team that loses this game. It's that simple. No body wants to walk away with the Silver Ball. No body. In my gut, I'm going with The Dawgs in this game. I don't have a long drawn out analysis or a power point presentation. It's very simple. Cville has been winning on the road this post season. That's all. Whitwell earned the right to play all their playoff games at home. I know that's where I would want to play if I were in their shoes just like we all would. However, I give the advantage to the Corndawgs because they know the feeling of losing this game. They have unfinished business to take care of this week and they are not going to be denied. Also, I'm from the West and I always pull for teams from my side of the state. With that said. GO DAWGS

  45. The phrase, the coaches way or the highway comes to mind. This is what parents seem to forget today, The only side that really matters in this type of situation is the coach's. When you are a head coach and overseeing your program, you have to make tough decisions. I promise you, no coach wants to kick players off there team, especially players that can help them. However, if a player does not abide by the rules a coach has established, that player has to go. It not only sets a standard for that season, but it sets the standard for as long as the coach is at that program. I have tremendous respect for coaches that put character and doing things the right way above simply winning. Coach Powers is teaching his players much more than how to play baseball, he is teaching them important life lessons. The problem with student athletes today is many of themt are coddled way too much and have parents that come up with a thousand reasons why it is not their fault or why it is the coaches fault they are not playing. The most important lessons any coach can teach their players is they can choose to do whatever they want to, but there are going to be consequences for what they choose to do. I have no idea what the circumstances in this decision were, but I know Coach Powers is doing what he feels is the best thing for his program and totally support his decision.
