  1. McCallie's coaches will tell you Howard's numbers are higher than what's listed on the recruiting boards. Pre-injury, the coaches told me they wouldn't let him squat anything over 675 and said he could max out over 700 no problem. Regardless, he's definitely a strong kid but I'm not buying he's going to manhandle anyone that has a realistic shot of placing at Heavyweight. If anything, this kind of silly talk just painted a target on his back when ideally you'd want his opponents to overlook him.

  2. Let these guys live in their bubble. I can name more than a few stronger than Cummins, just off the top of my head I'd go with Dee Parker from Red Bank or even James Howard from McCallie.

  4. I agree, I wish they would just bounce and be gone. If, they are not going to play by the same rules as everyone in the state than be gone! The only issue with this would be when it comes to round ball season. When that season starts you would have Shelby county screaming for a chance to play the best team in the state. When its football season or pretty much any other season it would not matter.

  5. I didn't know my thoughts concerning the Z Plan were going to stir up a hornet's nest. Pun intended M.O.M...LOL. If y'all do a little research, you'll find that most coaches, as well as the TSSAA, didn't like the plan once it went into effect. Here's one link, but there are other articles that would be an interesting read. https://www.jacksonsun.com/story/sports/high-school/football/2014/10/29/hs-football-tssaas-childress-ready-z-plans-exit/18154871/ I definitely prefer to know where I stand and who I'll probably play as the season winds down. The standard response to that would be, "All you've got to do is win and you won't have anything to worry about." It's not that simple. Besides, wouldn't that same statement apply to McNairy in 2018? I don't know any specific examples, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were several 7-3 teams left out of the playoffs under the Z Plan. What about Livingston Academy in 2005? The Wildcats finished 4th in their region with a 5-5 record. Would they have made the playoffs under the Z Plan? Probably not, but under a plan like we have now they won the Class AAA state championship. (Alcoa was AA then) What about Stratford in 2018? They finished third in their region with a 2-8 record. Would they have made the playoffs under the Z Plan? Probably not. Yet, they made it all the way to the Class AAA semifinals where they lost by 6 to a very good Covington team. What about Haywood in 2018? Due to a tough schedule and several key injuries, the Tomcats finished 6-4. But Haywood would have most likely made the Z Plan playoffs since they finished 2nd in their region. However, most people across the state would have looked at Haywood's 6-4 record and wondered why. A very healthy Tomcat team breezed through their first four playoff games before falling to an unbelievable Greeneville team in the Class 4A championship game. I don't like seeing teams with an 0-10 record in the playoffs either, and I also felt bad for McNairy, but I think the plan we have now is the best we have for the majority of the top and middle tier teams. It has structure, it's easy to understand, it's UNBIASED, and it usually works fairly well. I know it's no consolation to teams like McNairy, but teams that don't belong in the playoffs are generally eliminated by the time we get to the third round anyway. Haywood was left out of the playoffs when they first started in 1969. The Tomcats were 10-0, and ranked number 1 in the AP's final regular season poll. That was definitely not a case of win and you don't have anything to worry about, but the rules were clear and simple. I'll have to say I agree with Man of Millions about Memphis. As for me, i wish they would go through with their threat and withdraw from the TSSAA.

  6. Duncan Cave from Greeneville was a monster too, I've heard his lifts were pretty high back in the day.

  8. That was a tough year for McNairy for sure. I honestly believe they were the best team in any class in the state to not make the playoffs. But it also attests to just how stout the old 7-3A was. Pound for pound best region in the state imo. McNairy beat Hardin County and Lexington that year.

  9. ^^^^^^^^^ This^^^^^^^^^^^^ I remember that year very clear. I did NOT want to see McNairy again. Honestly, I do not think that anyone in the region wanted to see them again. SGC got a couple of breaks in that game and were able to pull out the victory. If, I were to say to you " We only have 1 spot left in the chase for the gold. One team is 0-10, the other team is 7-3, who do you think should make it to the dance? " Obviously, anyone with more than a few brain cells rubbing together between their ears would select the 7-3 team. That was the most disappointed I have ever been with our current format. I know that it has some positives but this was absolutely horrible. In regards to the current TSSAA format, it does not seem to penalize Memphis for pretty much anything. I could type on this laptop till I was blue in the face about the malfeasance, misconduct, underhanded, and dirty crap that goes on the Memphis. TSSAA seems to just turn its back and act like it never happened. Just one example, I will not mention the school because I was told this info in confidence. One school went and played a Memphis school in the sub-state BBall tournament a few years ago. There is supposed to be a split of the gate. TSSAA get a share, each school gets a share. Well, the one school that traveled from rural west TN to go to Memphis and played never got a check. Not a cashiers check, not an IOU, not anything. Still to this day that money never showed. There were about a 1000 people at that game..... I guess the gate money just up and walked out of the gym...... What happened to all the freaking money??? I have long been a proponent of doing away with them and starting over. Train our refs better for all games, pay them better, make ALL tournament officials a semi/full time job. make very clear rules, and follow them! Make any disputes public and handled very timely. Lawdy, I have gotten fired up. I am going to quit now.

  11. Definitely, just want to be playing our best ball when it matters the most. Hopefully we can get another shot at that great McKenzie team which would mean we made it to the State Tourney. Good luck to y’all going forward.

  13. I didn't get a bike till I was 10 and Mom and Dad got it there. That was my brother and my favorite store, Kuhn's was a close second. I remember when I started playing grasshoper football back in the day is what we called it when we were in JR high, and Paul Turney was our coach ,and I had bought a pair of white rubber cleats to play Babe Ruth baseball in, so I asked Coach Turney if I could wear them playing football and he let me. I looked like Billy White Shoes Johnson out there. LOL. Otasco was a small Walmart back then. BTW, I bought those cleats myself at Otasco , I had to mow alot of yards to get I think it was 8 bucks back then to buy them, but the early and mid 70's that was alot of money. Not bragging on myself at all, but how many kids now would mow a yard to buy cleats because there parents couldn't really afford extra thing's? I loved those days and so glad I got to live them. Of course The Eagles are by far my greatest band of all time with KC and the Sunshine band right there with them. Lots of good memories and music I could understand!!

  15. You tell me, if your own crowd is telling you to take the dive for the DQ you know what's up. I've been on the opposite end of this exact situation against PF and they did not encourage their kid to take the DQ.

  16. My understanding is that teams have been given until a set date to have wrestler's families buy the two per athlete allotment. If after that date there are still some tickets available then they are going to be opened up to the general public.

  20. This was a fun thread to read through. The old posts and the ones from recent months. The list obviously starts with George Quarles and Gary Rankin for obvious reasons. In my opinion though, this list of coaches can run deep. With all due respect to coach Quarles and coach Rankin, there’s been a lot of great coaches over the years that coached at much smaller schools with less talent, and the win loss record will never tell the full story for how good those coaches are. I still want to be clear, though, and say those two guys are still phenomenal football coaches that should still be ranked one and two no matter what. Other great coaches that come to mind for me: Clint Satterfield - Trousdale County Bobby Sharp - Lewis County Jeff Porter - White House Mac McCurry - Moore County/Marion County/Marshall County/Franklin County Roger Perry - Portland Ron Aydelott - Riverdale/Hillsboro Thomas McDaniel - Oakland/Christian Brothers Jackie Bennett - Page (Short run but very good coach. If other circumstances did not require his early retirement he would have kept things rolling at Page).

  21. I’m not an Alcoa fan but Brian Nix the D coordinator at Alcoa has to be mentioned. Having seen Alcoa several times over the past couple of decades I can say their defense is what has grown the most to get them to the level they are today. Of course our D coordinator at Milan, Marc Cobb is a pretty dang good one as well.
