It’s a rare occasion that would cause me to begin a new thread on here, but I feel that this is such an occasion. I have nothing against Elizabethton, but it has been a long time since I have been as happy for a high school coach as I am for Coach John Olive. Although he is given credit for it by diehard Maryville fans, 99% of high school football fans have no idea that Coach Olive is responsible for the Maryville Football Dynasty. Coach Olive served as head coach at Maryville High in the late 80’s and early 90’s when their program had been irrelevant for 15 years. What few times they did qualify for the playoffs, they were blown out in the first round. After the 1990 season, Coach Olive was in the market for a new DC and took a chance by reaching out to longtime Rhea Co. DC Tim Hammontree, who along with HC the late Bill Horton, had just finished an incredible 10 year run that included 2 runner-up finishes in the state’s highest class. Sensing it was time for a change, Hammontree accepted the offer. 2 years later Olive accepted the HC job at Tullahoma. Now, it sounds crazy today to say that a coach would leave Maryville for Tullahoma, but at the time it was seen as a big step up. Maryville promoted Hammontree to HC, and he hired an unknown named George Quarles as OC, and 5 years later Maryville was state champs. Hammontree then left for a job in Georgia, and Quarles was promoted to HC. 15 years later, Quarles had the highest winning percentage in America. I know from communicating with Maryville fans that they have the upmost respect for Coach Olive and are very happy for him Congrats on a job well done!!6 points

I don’t think it would have mattered what Hampton did. Westview was better. Anyone that says different is suspect. Congratulations to Westview. Congratulations to Hampton on taking it as far as possible!3 points

I 2nd that, this is one of my favorite weekends football wise and a lot of the time the games turn out to be duds, it makes it all worth it when you get one like this!3 points

Well, Elizabethton fell a little short with the loss to Tullahoma 21-14 in 2 OT (AAAA). Alcoa (AAA) won and Powell (AAAAA) won. Rhea County lost 3 games this year... two to state champs and the other to a runner up. It was a hard year for Rhea County, but they played a great schedule, played hard, and ended up with the qtr finals playoff appearance. They lost to the champs Powell. Congrats to all the State Champs!!! Gives them something to train for in the off season, get ready men!!!3 points

Got a feeling Pujo has been in Chattanooga the last day or two, so I'll fill in for both of us. We know what's coming and it's been coming since game one of the playoffs...IMO, only way to prepare for this is to have played against it. We got about 3,000 lb, that can move, coming at you every play. If they can stop that, they deserve every bit of praise due. WE COMING AND ABOUT TO FIND OUT! GO DOGSSSSSSSS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Praying for safe travels for everyone and a safe game for each. ps. I'd travel 2 days for this game3 points

As a neutral football fan this game was a treat to witness. Congratulations to both teams on a hard fought game. There were fantastic players all over the field. To the victor goes the spoils. Way to go Tullahoma. I was pulling for you because of the arrogance from a few Betsy fans in this thread. I thought not kicking that field goal late in the 4th was a terrible call still but it turned out not to matter. Thanks to both teams for such a great game!2 points

Less than 5 hours to go for the last game of this amazing Senior class at Oakland, 56-2 with it's 3rd trip to the title game. Of course this group has talent, but it's taken on all comers with a daunting schedule, and showing tremendous heart when going up against great teams. Win or lose, proud to be a Patriot2 points

Congrats to Betsy as well. Three consecutive final appearances winning two isn’t to be taken lightly.2 points

Here to eat my crow. Congrats to Coach Olive and Tullahoma2 points

I knew this game would be good, I think the 6A game has the potential to be decent too2 points

Congrats to Tullahoma. John Olive can thank his defense for pulling that one out.2 points

Worst coaching decision I have ever seen why be afraid to take a 10 -7 lead with 2 minutes left. Trust your defense they are why you have a chance to win. And elizabethton would probably had to score a touchdown they wouldn't have tried a field goal they don't trust the kicker2 points

U kick the field goal and this game is probably over with SMH.2 points

The radio guys for Elizabethton are complaining about the refs to much. Makes it hard to listen2 points

Must congratulate Powell for their performance last night! As some posters alluded to from reading, those of us in the stands had a feeling in the second quarter that we were going to come back and pull it off in the end! I do think there were a couple of questionable calls but for the most part, I thought it was a fairly called game. If there was any doubt our signal caller is not the real deal, he not only showed it last night but in the playoffs as well! Again, just making it to the championship is great for us, our team and program! Nothing to hang your heads low on boys!2 points

Congratulations to Alcoa on another state championship! ”If you build it they will come….”2 points

Yep. And I am sure he'll be happy to know that scouts are combing the streets of the Carter community looking for potential transfers.2 points

The ref that called that unsportsmanlike just wants to be seen calling a call against a big time player. Kids all week have done that celebration.1 point

I really hope Oak Ridge brings in a coach that can get them back to where they belong. Local high school football is better when Oak Ridge is a good team like they should be.1 point

The fumble and the 2 picks have handed Westview 21 points. 2 other TDs were Dimes. Both times Hampton was in man coverage. Simpson made terrific reads and throws. I didn't understand Hampton before half not going with the set where they had 2 fullback on the left and bulldozed to get the 1st TD. Simpson is very good. These are still the 2 best teams in 2A. Hampton needs to score and get a stop.1 point

Then I’m sure his “offer” will definitely become an OFFER very soon. Maybe his family would be interested in touring beautiful downtown Oneida1 point

HTV, You and osunut have made me smile today. It is so obvious you two are happy about last night and should be. I know you have had issues with me especially last season on twitter but you are good folk and deserve to win it all. Enjoy it all you two. RWR!1 point

I read where Powell’s Cannon Lusby went to the last Powell state championship in 2011 remembers how heart broken everyone was. Ended up the leading tackler last night 10 years and 1 days from that game.1 point

Goodluck to both teams. Don’t know much about both teams history but I believe this is first state appearance for both. From someone who has been blessed to watch multiple state games for their team and seen joyous victories and heartbreaking defeats: stop, slow down, look around, and take in the moment. It’s a precious time! GL to both I look forward to watching .1 point

Hope I tell this right but I thought of a quote by Johnny Majors mom after he fumbled and cost Tennessee a game.Every now and then, every one burns the biscuits. This Tullahoma kicker is a weapon that could make a huge difference in a game like this.1 point

There were a lot of calls, a couple of them questionable, but both teams benefitted from the 50/50 calls. I just wish the officials would have kept the flags in their pockets a little more both ways instead of pulling them when it had no effect on the outcome of the play. And for those in this thread being petty and pointing the "recruiting" finger again, I invite you to give specifics if you are so sure it's happening. Powell has most likely been the most "turned in" and investigated program in the state the last couple of years, yet the TSSAA hasn't found anything. Is that sheer coincidence, or perhaps are some jealous that Matt and his staff have outworked the staff of the school they support? So you have an opportunity - put up or shut up. Powell has its Gold Ball and there isn't a thing any of you can do to belittle it. Keep sucking on those sour grapes.1 point

Thanks SS. I'm just happy for the kids, the coaches (especially Matt), and my father in law (God rest his soul), who would have been in the front row tonight cheering those kids on, win or lose. He can rest easy now!1 point

I know I already congratulated Powell, but I wanted to specifically include OSU and KnoxPhoto, both really stand-up gentlemen that I have a lot of respect for as a fellow poster. You guys deserve to bask in this victory. I’m honestly happy for both of you.1 point

Everybody brings up the Maryville and Catholic games. Not 5A just games to prepare for playoffs in my mind. If something bother you guys it’s good to just ignore it not stalk Potts dad on Twitter or hate on coaches in forums.1 point
