  1. Thats the problem. This is all new. Here we are a few days away and nobody even knows whats going on. All of the coaches voted to not even have a region tournament to only be told their vote didnt matter. If they dont use region placings nobody will wrestle once they reach the semi's. Some of these kids are wrestling 4 weekends in a row anyway.
  2. That really was a great time for youth wrestling. There was an abundance of talent spread over many teams. There was a lot of young, energetic coaches. It seems to go in cycles just as high school wrestling does. The kids today have much better technique but that time period we are talking about was absolutley loaded with tough athletic kids. Its pretty neat and very rewarding watching these kids you have known and worked with since they were 5 years old mature into young men and reach their goals in high school .
  3. You got that right coach. Kevins Mighty Warriors were Loaded!!! We would go over and practice with them a lot and traveled out of town together quite often. It was an impressive room to say the least. Campbell Lewis, Blaike Henry, Jt , Tim Westbrooks, James Westbrooks, Zach watson, Jack Boone, Alex Ward and many others would be in there on any given day. Kevin was great about opening the room to anyone that wanted to practice regardless of what club you wrestled for.
  4. Thats what Im saying, we still have the same number of local tournaments we always had. They are better now as we get more out of town kids. We also have beginners tournaments. The ones that do want to travel have it much easier than we did. You look at all the top wrestlers out of the last 15 years , all of them were traveling even way back then. The problem is some programs are slipping for various reasons and the rest of the state is getting better. We use to have the only game in town at the youth level and thats not the case anymore. Our local teams that have to follow those middle school rules are under a huge disadvantage and will continue to suffer. There are a lot of new teams coming up the pipeline across the state that are going to be placing higher than the tradional Chattanooga powers in short time. Call me and we can discuss in more detail. You can come show a headthrow but you are NOT demonstarting on me! Im too old for broken ribs again!
  5. You are exacltly right, The Sharpshooters from Rutherford county was one of the top 1-2 programs in the state for many years. Had that whole situation not imploded you would see Blackman in the state finals without question. Now those kids are at three different schools. You are also correct in that other areas will catch Chattanooga, its already happening and will only continue to do so. Williamson county has an excellent feeder program and in fact its one of the top 4 in the state. You have a collegiate national champion and a former coach at either St Eds or Blair Academy coaching. You also have Bean, Salter, Rippy ,Kramer and Williams among others with great programs in the Nashville area. The Knoxville area has Pittman, Jones, Sayne, and Foreman among others. East Tennesse is getting better with such individauls as Marshall, Frye, Harrison and Myers among others who are putting in a lot of hard work to better their areas and it will pay off, For years Chattanooga had the best coaches and feeder clubs but its not the case anymore. Wrestling will continue to balance out . I still think Chattanooga will produce the majority of the team champions for a while but the top 10 will be filled with teams from other areas as well.
  6. Its rare that I will band together with my heated rival from the west but I am going to have to back up Ghouse on this one.. The powerhouse Cbros team from the past few years was built from their Wave club. People always assume because you are a private school you "recruited" all your kids. Ghouse and Mr Baucke built that team from scratch and took them all over the midwest for years. Those involved in the sport knew what Cbros had coming way before they burst onto the high school scene.
  7. Bear Cat comes out of retirement to defend his fellow Irishmen? I thought you were still on retainer by the Bsfbag? lol Your math is corect but as Mr West pointed out everyone is assuming there would have been a pin. I will be the first to admitt the call was in error and it did take away the Father Ryans CHANCE to earn the pin and if it were called against us I would be as upset as they are. The Baylor wrestler was on his back for a long time and in all honesty I expected a pin in the first few seconds of them being in that position but he fought it off and it didnt appear the Father Ryan wrestler was getting any closer to the pin when it was stopped. I thought we were out of bounds anyway but couldnt tell from my angle but one of the officials sitting there observing told me one of our shoulders was out of bounds anyway. Again, Im not for sure but I do know that we were down 6-0 and came back to not only take the lead but also get the pin. I dont think the Father Ryan wrestler was going to get the pin with the position they were in without getting much too high and or going out of bounds. As Mr West also pointed pointed out this was early in the match and a lot of things could have been wrestled differently had Father Ryan gotten the win there. The Baylor heavyweight has gotten the pin in both Father Ryan matches and other than the split second it took to put him on his back in the last match he has controlled both matches completley so the better wrestler won. It appears our journalist are using track wrestling to get updates and it has Blake listed as Donovan. Some of his matches are listed as Donovan and some as Blake so his whole profile is messed up. Ill see if I can get it fixed before they have their seeding meetings so their wont be any confusion.
  8. Darrell, tickets are VERY hard to get at Baylor because of limited space but if you let me know ahead of time I will get you one!
  9. There were no shots taken at a wrestler , I deleted it so there wasn't any misunderstanding. Luckily you aren't an official or this board would be blowing up after any match you officiated. This thread was about the Baylor vs McCallie match , or it was supposed to be until you started grasping at straws. It was a great match by a great group of young men in the absolute most exciting environment possible. I can't wait for the rematch and to see Connell vs Robinson III and Parker vs Hoodenpyle II.
  10. There was no stalling calls made that affected this match. It was a takedown call and a fleeing the mat. In all honesty they were very lenient on allowing stalling in a few of the last matches.
  11. I'm not sure if there is a hidden meaning there but if you are referring to the Father Ryan match again then you have no credibility. In the one match in particular you are referencing there were two takedowns( both by Baylor) , there was one set of back points ( by Baylor), there was one reversal by Father Ryan ( initiated by Baylor again being the aggressor and trying for more back points) . There is a difference in stalling and your opponent trying to make it look like you are stalling by pushing out of bounds and not allowing you to re enter the mat. You don't call three stalls in the last period and 2 in the last 10 seconds when the winner sprawls and is on top and just got a takedown a minute before that. . I would think a ref really paying attention would have called stalling the other way. That is all a moot point and has nothing to do with the match last night. The Baylor fans probably would have been complaining if it had gone the other way because two calls would have been missed. The fleeing was fleeing without a doubt and had to be called , the takedown was close and I think the absolute perfect call but like I said it wouldn't have shocked me to have seen a takedown awarded too early due to the excitement and energy in the room. I think the refs did an incredible job remaining unbiased and not getting caught up in the moment. Another example you are failing to mention is the celebrating penalty on Parker. It was the same call made against you in the state duals. I didn't agree with the call against you guys last year and I didn't agree last night but fortunately it didn't cost us the match. If it had I'm sure our fans would be extremely upset. The officials called a perfect match in my opinion in an incredibly tough environment. We will have a rematch next week I'm sure and hopefully it will be as exciting as last nights . Good luck to both teams the rest of the year.
  12. Lol, Im suprised that certain dad didnt either.
  13. What a great match! The Baylor parents arent complaing about the calls because they agreed with them. We arent complaining and comparing it to the Father Ryan match because it would be ridiculous to compare the two matches. There were two close calls tonight but there werent blatant horrible stalling calls as in the Father Ryan match. Obviously I am biased and wear red tinted glasses but I actually told coach Connell after the match I thought that call could have gone either way. I filmed the match for the Robinsons and now after watching it I agree completley with the call on the takedown. It was very close but Tate still had an underhook and immediatley used it before Adam could demonstrate control. Ill post it if I can . Again, very close and I wouldnt have been shocked to see it called the other way. As far as the fleeing call, I like Hoodenpyle a lot but it was fleeing 100%. Im sure he didnt intentionally flee but if your opponent is in scoring position and you leave the mat they have to call it. The exact same call was made last year against my son vs McCallie in the state , my son didnt flee intentionally but he left the mat trying to react to a shot and unfortunatley its fleeing. The two officials are about as good as it gets and I thought they did an exemplary job tonight in a very energy charged environment and they didnt try to control the outcome of the matches in any way. I had dinner with a large group and there were numerous coaches there from other schools and everyone there agreed with the calls, even a few McCallie people. This was an incredible high school sporting event we witnessed tonight. My hats off to all the young men on both sides that fought their hearts out.
  14. Yes, this doesn’t make a lot of sense . Some of the kids, could wrestle 4 weekends in a row. For example Baylor wrestles McCallie in their dual meet tomorrow, possibly next week in the state duals, then the regions then the state. That’s ridiculous and doesn’t accomplish anything but increasing risk of injury and taking a little steam and excitement out of the potential match ups at the individual state tournament. This decision to hold a region tournament was baffling especially since most coaches were opposed to it.
  15. In over 30 years in the sport I have never seen anything like the 152 lb match. Obviously being the dad I'm highly upset. I have nothing but respect for the Simpsons and my complaint is not directed at them but I hope someone reviews the tape of that match and fixes the problem. Even the Father Ryan parents were apologizing after the match. Class acts and it's much appreciated.
  16. I'm not sure which ages you are asking about. At youth tournaments our biggest obstacle and complaint is the length of the tournaments. This past weekends top 100 had almost 600 kids and 65 different weight classes in the different age groups. There simply isn't enough time to have a seeding meeting. It would take all day . Coaches/ parents are required to fill in seeding information on track wrestling when signing up their wrestler. It's done in a drop down box and you have 4-5 choices to chose from . The highest being state placer. The problem and inconsistencey comes from kids not being ranked correctly by whomever enters them into the tourney. Some are done by error and some are probably intentionally entered wrong in order to gain a better seeding. Track then seperates all the kids from the same team and tries to seperate the better wrestlers based on the seeding criteria that was submitted. There were weight classes this past weekend that had 4-6 returning state placers in them so the odds of the best two kids wrestling early was quite possible. I also noticed some of the better wrestlers didn't have the correct seeding criteria entered either. I'm not sure if this was just overlooked by whomever entered them or if it was intentional so their wrestler would get more quality matches but it makes it more probable two good wrestlers will face off earlier in the tournament. With us having a true second match it all works out in the end no matter what.
  17. Ghouse explained it perfectly. If you are referring to youth level tournaments I can give a little more clarity as well.
  18. If the tournaments are set up correctly prior to the tournament it is flawless . The brackets are all online , the results are instant, team scoring is in real time. You can look at the results based on your team and not have to search through all the brackets. It's especially helpful at youth tournaments where there are 5 age groups wrestling and some teams have 40+ kids entered. Where it is truly a life saver is setting up the brackets and numbering the matches . What used to take me all night by hand now literally takes 5 seconds. If you aren't getting these benefits then you aren't setting up the tournament correctly or you aren't running it correctly .
  19. Baylor may be without a few wrestlers that are either banged up or boarders at home with their families. Should be interesting
  20. Coach, do you have the tentative scheduled times? I know its starts at 530 today. Im assuming they will wrestle through the quarters. What time are the semi's and finals?
  21. Ive seen this match several times in the opractice room. Should be a good one with two contrasting styles.
  22. Very frustrating. The team was almost there and excited to start the season off with some quality matches. It's not even going to get below freezing until around 10:00 and the ground will still be too warm to freeze. We know it was out of your hands Coach. Good luck the rest of the season
  23. Murphy on to day 2. Finished. 6-1. Beat a Fargo Greco champ and the 5th place finisher at last years super 32
