  1. It's been a while since I've had a chance to check the boards, and as usual, crimsontide takes a stand promoting himself and his staff. I didn't post to gain your approval, nor does anything you post damage my credibility. I made reference to last year's Mt.Juliet game with Blackman to illustrate the talent level they faced. I know the teams weren't involved this year, the Blackman team is playing varsity basketball, I merely noted the situation. Had this years team played last years schedule, they would not have made the state tournament at all. Mt.Juliet had a decent squad, but nothing like last year. Not even close. They merely played a very weak schedule. I saw all the home games, and most all the boys teams I saw them play in that gym were weak. WJB was probably the strongest team they played and their team was decimated with injury to the post game. Still took a clock error by MJuliet to win that one at home. Just not impressed with the mj team. Maybe a better, more disciplined approach would not have swayed my opinion. I just know,as a mother, and according to my friends and their parents, the boys might have been prouder of their involvement as well.
  2. I agree, Blackman lost much more in terms of instant varsity talent than MJ. Sometimes it's more about the competition than the circumstances. Not to point the finger, but Blackman had the game won last night and lost it more than MJ winning it. Last years MJ team was just the opposite, shoulda won, and couldn't close the deal. I don't think either team was well coached last night, neither seemed to have much control of the game. A long distance prayer from the mj guard, and the game was over in ot.
  3. In a one game, winner take all, there isn't a better junior high coach than Coach Johnson. His record speaks for itself. He's won with posts, running a hi-lo and utilizing every inch of height, he's won with guards in the post taking advantage of quickness over size. He conditions like no other, mentally prepares his team for anything and will play anybody, anywhere. Can't imagine MJ without him. THANKS COACH J!!!! Way to go Lady Bears!!!!
  4. Talking with some Mt. Juliet supporters at last nights MJ-Beech district game, it was mentioned to me tomorrow's MJ middle championship game with Sycamore was the 8th or 9th year in a row the school had participated in the girls sectional tournament, winning three championships and finishing second twice. Many of the folks had daughters that played for Mount Juliet and no one could think of another school with such a run of consecutive sectional appearances. Smyrna's been there, as has Lavergne, Dickson, Whitthorne, Central, and last year, Sycamore, but none has put together a consecutive run that begins to touch MJ's record of making the tournament every single year of Mount Juliet Middle's existence, even back to the last year of MJ junior high's last year, when Coach Johnson won the state with Kelly Gassie and Holly Hudson. Congrats Coach Johnson and Lady Bears, and good luck tomorrow night. Go Lady Bears!
  5. Not a rumor. As far as middle school boys, lots of problems. No discipline, win at all costs, poor grades. Not the kind of example schools need to establish as a model. Just an opinion. Information comes straight from the source.
  6. A large part of learning the game is learning to win. I will agree, winning is not the priority, but it has to be the goal. Sometimes teaching kids to become concerned about the team is the best you can do, unselfish players are harder and harder to come by.

Good post Fish, and no doubt dead on the money. Every team in Tennessee enjoying success at the high school level has a successful feeder program in place. Upperman, Shelbyville, MJ, Forrest, Jackson County, all share a common ground in preparing young ladies for high school. All have good middle school teams, and I'm not sure but I think MJ has won three state championships and been in the finals of every middle school state tournament since Coach Johnson began coaching there. I know Upperman coach Dana McWilliams coached her middle school team for a few years as did Butch Agee at Gordonsville. There is no area of the development more important than junior high, if you intend to be successful in high school. None.
  8. Kellie Gassie did play for Coach Johnson as did Christian Gibson, Miaca Bowman, Rebecca Sharp, Jordan Nixon, Taylor Hall, Macie Gleaves, etc. My daughter played for Coach johnson in AAU several years ago and we've followed Mt. Juliet girls basketball ever since. He probably was running the same offense in summer ball too. The program extends from 6th graders to seniors and, in my estimation, the finest "program" in Tennessee. All the coaches work together and the results are obivious.
