  1. and...GP's coach hasn't been stuck yet??? Keep the updates coming...
  2. The school is actually within the city limits of Gatlinburg. Easiest route from Elizabethton would probably be to come down I-81 South and take I-40 East to exit #435, turn right off the exit and follow the signs to Gatlinburg. Once inside the city limits (road will go from two lanes to four), the school is about a mile to mile and a half on your right (Proffitt Road). There will be "GP" Christmas lights and a new sign for the school, not to mention school zone signs. I came up to play in the East TN Amateur a few years ago at Elizabethton Golf Course and it was right around a 2 hour drive. Hope this helps.
  3. No dog in this fight, just a fan of the district which Carter plays in. I came to the game to see how Lester Wilson would handle the pressure and the bottom line is Carter was the better team and won, as they should have. The district Carter plays in night in and night out prepared them for this game and the crowd that came along with it. It was actually quite refreshing to me to see that the hand check wasn't called all night long...the crew working the game let them play and protected the shooters, and left out all of the ticky tack calls, just as they should have in a game of this magnitude. Hats off to Sullivan East, not only for the effort and class they showed, but also for the passion of their fans. It was probably one of the best, if not the best environments I have ever seen in a high school basketball game. The only downfall to this game is that somebody had to lose. Congratulations and good luck to Carter, and to Sullivan East...man what a great season.
  4. Is there a chance Buda comes back???
  5. New coach at Cocke County is Greg Hacker, an assistant from TL Hanna High School in South Carolina (the school made famous by the movie "Radio"). Extensive experience on both sides of the ball and also big into strength and conditioning. Played collegiately at Western Kentucky and started coaching in Kentucky straight out of college. Seems pretty sharp. Maybe he can get Cocke County back to being respectable. Time will tell.
  6. First, who are the "Bison's" and where are they from?
  7. Wow, I knew it was coming but I didn't know how soon hahaha... But I'll admit, I think the Falcons are geared toward the 3 peat. However, I do wish I went to Rule, and never will I cheer for the Falcons unless its Atlanta Falcons. But good try though.. Now the teams that may rain on Fulton's parade in my opinion will be WEST and Gibbs(the sleeper).. AE will have that chance in the 2nd game.. I think the 1st game Fulton may put a whooping on my boys but AE will bounce back 2 weeks later and upset the Champs Don't sleep on GP!
  8. I got this from an NFHS rules website when I googled "muffed kicks in high school football". A couple of points about muffed kicks or fumbles and touchbacks. A kick (refer to a play, not the striking of the ball with a players foot) ends when possession is gained or the ball is blown dead while not in player possession. This is important because any kick going into R's end zone is a touchback. If K kicks to R and R muffs (an unsuccessful attempt to gain possession of the ball) into it's own end zone and K falls on the ball it will still be a touchback, not a touchdown. A little more drastic example would be if K kicked to R and when the ball hit the ground both teams started to play soccer with the ball. R kicks it up the field and K intercepts and kicks it back down the field and this goes on for a while. Finally the ball gets near R's end zone and is kicked into the end zone. It is still a touchback because possession was never gained. Of course with this example there would be about 100 illegal kick penalties. If a kick is muffed in the field of play either team may recover but only R may advance. If K recovers a muffed kick it will get the ball 1st and 10 at the spot of recovery. But a muff should not be confused with a fumble. A fumble can only happen after possession has been gained. If K kicks to R and R gains possession, either catches or recovers it after it hits the ground, and then fumbles it into it's end zone it is a live ball and should K fall on it it is a touchdown. If R fumbles and K recovers K can advance.
  9. Same scenario (almost) in Gatlinburg-Pittman/Cumberland Gap game. GP punts to CG, return man form CG "muffs" the kick on about the 5 yard line. Ball carries into the end zone, recovered by GP for what all thought was a touchdown, only to be reversed into a touchback, with CG retaining possession on their own 20. It has something to do with the "muff", which is treated totally different in college. I thought the same thing (touchdown) intially until the rule was explained to me. One of those "quirky" high school rules issues. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  10. Officials, as I understand it, are picked from all over the state after being nominated by their supervisors and chosen by the TSSAA office. They are all then brought to the Boro and worked in preliminary state tourney games. Championship game officials are then picked from those who worked preliminary state games in the Boro. The final say of championship game officials is made by TSSAA.
  11. When I was in high school some years ago, we always played Cosby in baseball. I think that the prospect of a home and home series in basketball would be exciting and VERY competitive. I can kinda understand, but don't agree with the lose-lose thought of a football game though. I can hear it now...If Cosby beats CCHS, "We beat up on a 4A school", if CCHS beats Cosby, "They were supposed to beat us, we're a 1A school". With that said, I believe the gate draw would be big enough to make the prospect of a game between Cosby and CCHS a "win-win" situation for both schools, I would be willing to bet the gate draw could possibly be as big as the crowds of old when Jefferson County came calling to Hedrick Field. I don't believe you could play home and home though, as Cosby doesn't have the stadium to hold the crowd that would gather for the game. The game would almost have to be played at CCHS to be able to handle the crowd. Just my opinion, but I don't think either group of kids would shy away from playing this game, I think excitement in Cocke County would be through the roof, especially for the kids. It seems as if somewhere along the way, the kids have been lost in the shuffle at Cocke County High School, especially in relation to the football program.
  12. SPLITBACK, to say the least, it's a mess. You have three middle school "programs" in the county. First, you have Cosby which gets its players from the Cosby area K-8 schools (Cosby, Smoky Mountain, Grassy Fork and I assume some of the kids from Del Rio). Second, you have Edgemont Elementary School which fields a middle school team and has been doing so fro 2-3 years I believe. You then have the "Cocke County Middle School" program, which feeds from the Newport area schools (Newport Grammar, Northwest, Parrottsville, Centerview, Bridgeport, some of the Del Rio kids). As you can see, this set-up creates a bad situation from the get-go for the middle school program. There are transportation issues in getting the kids to practice, trouble getting the word out to the kids in school, etc. The coaching staff in place for the middle school program is a very capable group of guys who were VERY successful when working with the Little League feeder programs throughout the county. Maybe the loss of "Midget" football at the Little League level was to blame, I don't know. But when everyone else in the area went to middle school, Cocke County was put behind the 8-ball, as there are no "true" middle schools in the county. I don't know the answer, but I do know I miss the days when CCHS was a team to be reckoned with. What is the answer? I don't know. My feeling is there is a chance to turn this program around, as well as have this school system make sense. The school board recently spent millions of dollars renovating old schools. Could that money have been spent better, to increase readiness for high school academically, as well as athletically? I believe so. Build a centrally located middle school in the county, which would benefit the kids as they would be exposed to a "true" middle school environment...as far as athletically, all the kids would go to school in a central location, so there would be fewer practice and participation issues. Could you possibly combine Cosby and Cocke County High Schools? You could, but you would kill a lot of tradition at both schools and I don't know if it would be fiscally possible or responsible. There is definitely talent in this county. The lowest level of the feeder programs are competitive and consistently playing for championships, year in and year out. The middle school was respectable this year for the first year in many. But when you get to the high school level, there is a drop in participation. I, as a resident and graduate of CCHS don't understand it. I can only hope that they get it figured out before my son gets to high school.
