  1. D2 AAA will be McCallie vs CBHS Father Ryan vs Baylor D2 A-AA will be Boyd Buchanan vs BGA Brentwood Academy vs Lakeway Christian
  2. Was there any discussion over why they did not or could not fill the rest of the weight classes for WNO?
  3. Wrestling at the next level regardless of the classification from NAIA up to D1 is great metric for overall strength of the sport in TN. Scholarships full or partial are more readily available at the smaller schools, while getting a partial scholarship at the D1 level like winning the lottery, some offer housing, and others offer tuition discounts. D1 only offers 9-1/2 scholarships(which is criminal) Less than 1% of high school wrestlers are offered even a partial scholarship at the D1 level. Greater opportunities exist at the D2, D3 and NAIA levels if a wrestler is looking to have his education paid for in exchange for his athletic abilities. These opportunities have grown immeasurably with social media and national exposure to the recruiters that was previously not available. Yes you still have to do well at national tournaments where college coaches are in attendance, but the advent of videos being available to coaches via flo and track among others has opened the doors to recruiting for the athlete that truly wants to wrestle at the next level. When comparing the talent level of today's wrestlers with wrestlers of previous generations, the # of wrestlers that are great is certainly higher. But when comparing truly elite athletes, from 20, 30, or 40 years ago they would more than hold there own if wrestling today. This comparison is skewed however in relation to the amount of opportunities today vs 20 or 30 yrs ago. Coaches and parents today, have infinitely more tools available to them, to assist their athletes if they desire to go to the next level. Registering for tournaments, communicating with coaches/recruiters, developing their resume' with highlight videos, you name it and it is at their fingertips. No doubt this sport has grown tremendously in TN due to many factors mentioned by others such as higher population, better coaching, dedicated parents, and athletes willing to put in the work. When speaking about the # of divisions and watering down of the sport vs participation levels etc, You are all forgetting to include one very important factor. Probably the most important factor and that is the kids. If you were to ask any wrestler, I guarantee they know where they stand in the pecking order, rankings etc. If a wrestler is vying for a state title, they want to face the toughest opponents, the most elite kids, regardless of what classification they are in or school they attend. State champion should carry a lot of weight, but in states like GA, with 7 classifications, it is guaranteed that the kids that win in 1A and 2A etc, want nothing more than to prove themselves against the state champs from 6A and 7A. They don't care about classifications or school size. They just want to wrestle.
  4. Beginning next season, NFHS is revising weight class breakdowns with the following choices: The weight class choices for BOYS will be as follows: 12 – 108, 116, 124, 131, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 190, 215, 285 13 – 107, 114, 121, 127, 133, 139, 145, 152, 160, 172, 189, 215, 285 14 – 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, 285. The GIRLS weight classes are as follows: 12 – 100, 107, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 165, 185, 235. 13 – 100, 106, 112, 118, 124, 130, 136, 142, 148, 155, 170, 190, 235. 14 – 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190, 235. States must select one of the three sets (12, 13 or 14) of weight classes for girls and one of the three sets (12, 13 or 14) for boys. They cannot adopt all three sets and are not permitted to switch back and forth during the season. I believe the current consensus among TN coaches is that TSSAA will choose to stay with 14 weight classes, but as of now still TBD. No changes at all in the lower weights up to 138, but a log jam can be expected in the upper weights around 175 through 215. the 4 most populous weight classes of recent years 170, 182, 195 and 220 will now have only 3 weight classes to compete in. I anticipate 190 to be the toughest weight class for the next few years as we will have all the 182 and 195 lbrs all challenging for a spot in 1 weight class. Other changes are all negligible, a couple lbs here or there. I honestly thought NFHS would add a weight class between 215 and 285 and eliminate 106 to keep it at 14 weights. I know KY already adopted the 14 weights shown above for the current 2022-23 season. It will make for a very interesting season. especially for duals as bumping before usually only meant only giving up 7-10 lbs. Imagine bumping from 175 to wrestle 190 or 190 to 215? Researching what each state decides could be a deal breaker on choosing which out of state tournaments to attend. Will Super 32, Beast of the East, Ironman, Kansas City Stampede, Knockout Classic, among others be 12, 13 or 14 weights? Not to mention several of the great out of state dual tournaments.
  5. Dual results from 1/9 show Demorest pinned Woodard
  6. Common sense would dictate that state region duals would be seeded based on regular season head to head results. For example if Team XYZ went undefeated vs all other regional teams in the regular season, they would be seeded #1 in their state region dual tournament to make it to state. and so on with seeds for #2, #3 etc in a dual bracket However after a fairly thorough search of TSSAA website, I could not find any info regarding procedures region duals to qualify for state. Can anyone out there please clarify if the TSSAA has rules/regulations for region duals seeding? Thanks in advance
  7. As of 11am the team total is down to 54 and the total # of wrestlers competing is 568. 9 teams will have all 14 weight classes, 8 teams with 13 weights and 8 teams with 12 weights, the remaining with various #'s represented. Brackets are still being built, but seeding has been completed. #1 & #2 seeds as of 11am 106 - #1 - Tran - Father Ryan; #2 - Ritchie - McCallie 113 - #1 -Walker - Cleveland; #2 - Heady - Union County 120 - #1 -Raney - Union County; #2 Terrell - Bradley Central 126 - #1 -Raney - Union County; #2 - Ellison - Cleveland 132 - #1 -Lipsey - Bradley Central; #2 - Anderson - Athens 138 - #1 -Maholtz - Eastside; #2 - Deselle - Summit 145 - #1 -Rusi - MBA; #2 Wittman - Franklin 152 - #1 -McGehee - MUS; #2 - Fowler - Cleveland 160 - #1 -Fowler - Cleveland; #2 Jameson - Summit 170 - #1 -Gibbs - Brentwood; #2 - Kon - Independence 182 - #1 -Brenot - Clarksville; #2 - Ricketts - Union County 195 - #1 -Atwood - Trousdale; #2 - Virzi - Paducah Tilghman 220 - #1 -Fisher - MBA; #2 - Styblo - Centennial 285 - #1 -Stutts - MUS; #2 - Gentle - McCallie
  8. With a total of 59 teams from 6 different states, placing in this tournament really carries some weight. No argument that this tournament will be tougher than individual state at almost every weight class with the likelihood of nearly full 64 man brackets at many weights, getting through to the blood rounds will be a meat grinder and placing will be an accomplishment to be proud of. Eastside, SC is reigning 7 time dual state champs and 6 time traditional state champs Kentucky bringing 7 teams down with Union County looking to take home the Drennan team title they won back in 2019 & 2020. Union County has won the last 7 team state titles. Waukesha West, WI always brings down tough competition Athens, AL represents the only team coming up from Alabama And 48 teams from TN, led by #1 ranked Cleveland with notables Blackman and Summit along with 45 other teams and numerous highly ranked individuals from across the state. Looking forward to a great tournament and watching highly talented wrestlers put on a show for the spectators.
  9. Cleveland duals is listed on both schedules for Independence and Jefferson. WG, you would know where Indy is competing on Saturday, solve the mystery.
  10. Annually one of the toughest dual tournaments in the SE, looking to get everyone's thoughts/predictions on this year's meat grinder of a tournament. Who makes it out of each pool and which 2 teams will face off for the championship Especially looking for some wise words from RMC on those always tough GA teams. Blackman coming off a win at Blackhorse, Father Ryan won at Knox, Teams competing this year From TN Blackman, Bradley, BGA, Christian Bros, Cleveland, Father Ryan, Independence, Maryville, Rossview, Summit From GA Cass, Dalton, Gilmer, Jefferson, West Forsyth, Woodland
  11. Hatch, as usual great job keeping us all up to date on summer wrestling. Great interviews and great info on our 16U team representing TN at National Duals. One thing you should consider is investing in a good microphone for these podcasts, I realize you were doing this one on the fly at Panera?, but the sound on your side was not the greatest.
  12. Go back and watch the end of Sells vs Pattee match. Sells got robbed by a table worker not paying attention. Clock stopped with 6 seconds left as wrestling continued and match ran through 8 seconds before ref called the fall. Match was over before he was ever turned.
  13. edited to add Div 1 A matchups in original post

  15. From Indiana state rankings which is all (1) class, the way every state should be for individuals. EMD has (10) ranked wrestlers 106 - Isiah Schaefer #5 113 - Evan Seng #4 120 - Reed Egli #10 138 - Tyler Vanover #22 152 - Hunter May #2 160 - Joey Pierre #17 170 - Brody Baumann #1 195 - Gabe Sollars #2 220 - Nathan Critchfield #2 285 - James Ralph #3
  16. Hey cbg, I hope you enjoying the sunshine down in FL while we are getting buried in snow. Hopefully Eastside, SC and Legacy Christian from OH can make it, along with Cleveland and defending champs Union County, this is going be a very tough tournament.
  17. Why not just slide it to Saturday/Sunday tournament? 1 day tournament with the 5 match rule will be tough.
  18. Info according to trackwrestling. I do not see Bradley on the list and they do not have it on their schedule. Teams listed are Cleveland Duals Click on the team you would like to view results for Arlington, TN Blackman, TN Father Ryan, TN Rossview, TN Summit, TN Woodland, Cartersville, GA https://unapproved website/seasons/MainFrame.jsp?TIM=1638907572499&twSessionId=aubrjbtldl&loadBalanced=true&pageName=Results.jsp%3FTIM%3D1638907572738%26twSessionId%3Daubrjbtldl
  19. Can anyone explain why Lewis forfeited to Uhorchuk at 126?
  20. With just the finals, and placement matches left to wrestle, the race to win a traditional team state championship is too close to call. The top 4 teams are all within 12 points of the lead and all have a good chance to pull this out. Pigeon Forge has 6 in the finals and 3 wrestling for 5th Fairview has 4 in the finals, 2 wrestling for 3rd and 2 for 5th Signal Mountain has 4 in the finals, 3 going for 3rd and 1 for 5th Greenville has 4 in the finals, 1 going for 3rd and 3 for 5th A lot on the line in the head to head finals matchups PF vs Fairview at 145 and 285 PF vs SigMT at 195 Fairview vs Greenville at 160 SigMT vs Greenville at 113 Grab your popcorn, this is about to get very entertaining!
  21. 14 scratches seems like a lot. Are the scales heavy or are they cracking down on skin checks?
  22. I'm hearing some info that the ticketing system timed out parents before they could purchase tickets to see their own son or daughter wrestle for a state championship. I realize there are Covid protocols in place but can TSSAA right this wrong so at least parents can get in? If they will not do anything, can this message board group band together to make sure these parents are able to attend?
  23. https://tssaa.org/article/state-wrestling-tournament-postponed-to-next-week
  24. TSSAA website states "No tickets will be sold to the public." but then the Governor lifted attendance restrictions as of February 1st. Does anyone have any inside info on if there will be tickets sold for spectators for Thursday, Friday or Saturday? On top of that will this weather and subsequent school closings affect State competition?
  25. Cobra, make sure you let TJ Duncan and Zach Watson know that they only won 4 state titles each because their 1st state championships don't count because they were in 8th grade. And while you are at it, contact TSSAA and have them revise their records also.
