  1. Hey, Boog, not what I said. Just think coaching is the #1 factor in HS football success, and this game features two of the best and one is the GOAT.
  2. And one more interesting element of the game. BB RB Keck is the adopted son of long time and current CPA assistant coach, Danny Keck.
  3. Should be a great game and could go either way. When I analyze a game that appears to be a matchup, I give the advantage to the best coaching staff. For this game, I can't do that: - Rankin - 17 state titles; 13 out of 16 at Alcoa and finals in 1st year at BB. Wow! Winningest coach in TN HS history. Only lost finals at Alcoa to CAK (twice) and CPA (2014 - Rankin has won every title since). Beat CPA and Martin twice in 3A. - Martin - 13 years at CPA: 3 titles (including 2014 win over Alcoa and Rankin). 8 finals including the last 6 in a row. WOW! One of the ironies of this matchup is that when Rankin was at Riverdale, he was one of the early proponents of the public/private split, after losing to BA and watching BA dominate in the public division. He later was a strong proponent for the split that sent CPA and BB to Division II. Now he is coaching in the private division for the first time. Of course, at Alcoa he was a target of a lot of critics that claimed he was recruiting from all over the Knoxville area for years. CPA's defense is stout. In FRA's 11 wins, they averaged 54. They scored 23 total in the 2 loses to CPA. Pearl Cohn is still undefeated. In their 12 wins other than CPA game, they averaged 45. CPA held them to 15. BB has averaged 38 points per game but only scored 14 against Webb. Interesting. 3 common opponents. CPA held DA to 6 and won 38-6. BB beat DA 36-24. CPA beat CAK 42-6. BB won 30-8 CPA beat GP 41-14. BB beat them 49-20. So, lace then up! This will be a classic coaching matchup and, IMO, a tossup determined by penalties and mistakes.
  4. Wow. I was at the game last Friday an didn't even notice he was out. I can't believe that slipped by me. Well, we are better with #1 but still good without him.
  5. excuse me. Please redefine "head and shoulders above everyone". Apparently "everyone" doesn't include the other 4 who they didn't beat.
  6. Only won 2 titles in 6 years. That is not head and shoulders above.
  7. He deserves it. Dominate player on the best defense in the Division, but unfortunately stats are all the voters look at.
  8. CPA has a really good record against 3A teams in the past. 2-0 this year.
  9. You are correct. In 2002, CPA lost their first 3 games, but turned around and beat two of those teams (Ezell Harding and USJ) on the road in the playoffs. They beat BB in the championship game 26-20 in OT. They scored on the first play in OT but missed the PAT kick. They then stopped BB 8 straight plays. CPA was called for pass interference on 4th and 10, giving BB 4 more downs from the 5YL. They held three downs then intercepted the second 4th down pass to win. The BB QB was Will Healy who became head coach at Austin Peay a few years ago and is now an assistant at UCF.
  10. He is around. My son played for him and has seen him around town a few times. His daughter graduated from CPA, I believe, a couple of years ago.
  11. CPA's first of 5 state titles in football was a victory over USJ 49-27 in 1A class in 2000. I was at the game in Murfreesboro. To this day, I believe it was the best line in CPA's great football history. 4 senior college signees and one junior lineman who signed with Auburn the next year, plus a wide receiver who signed with Florida, then transferred to Furman and played with Ingle Martin there. But about this week's game. If you are unfamiliar with CPA's team, understand that they have a DOMINATE defense. Don't look at final scores because Ingle has emptied the bench in most games after halftime. With the starters in the game CPA has given up a total of 24 points in the first quarters, and a total of only 33 in the first halves. Only 4 teams have scored on CPA in the first quarter, CPA shut out Pearl in the first half and lost 15-11. Pearl is undefeated, averages 43 per game, and is probably on their way to a state title. I know nothing about this year's USJ team but would be surprised if they will score much on CPA defense.
  12. I played there twice in HS in 1967 and 1969. John Hannah, NFL HOF'er, was on the 67 Baylor team we beat and was the #1 HS heavyweight wrestler in the country. In that era, Baylor and McCallie were regularly 2 of the top wrestling programs in the US. Both campuses were very beautiful. Haven't been back since since CPA has never played them.
  13. That's the price of wanting to be nationally ranked. Not a criticism, just the facts. The top ranked teams in the country don't worry about travel. At some point teams that want to be nationally ranked have to consider leaving state classiifcations and playing a schedule they design.
  14. Agree for sure, but this kid won the job over a senior midway through last season and took them to the state finals, so he is a little bit under the radar. Starting QB at CPA is never a slouch. The other 3 QB's in these games are definitely a class above him (at this point). Still 4 great teams and a rare opportunity to see this level football (and coaching) in one weekend.
  15. Just enjoy! I think LA can win and if not, it is better than blowing out a local team by 50. Great opportunity if you win to move into Top 10 in the nation for the first time in school history.
  16. You are right. I just saw that. Don't know why this was done and I am going to the Kansas concert that night so I will miss the game. Bummer!
  17. What a Friday night! August 18. just a few miles apart on Granny White Pike. IMG at Lipscomb Academy. CPA at Brentwood Academy 4 traditionally great schools loaded with D1 signees and future prospects. 4 really good QB's. IMG - Liberty commit; CPA - Delaware commit; BA - #2 rated 2025 nationally; LA - #5 rated 2025 nationally. Pick one of these games. Get there really early for a seat.
  18. 3rd year in a row - rubber match. CPA vs. LA. 5th year in a row for CPA to play for title. CCS looked really good after the 1st quarter. CPA kept stalling drives with penalties and the CPA strip fumble when they were up 21-7 and CCS was driving changed the game. CCS did a really good job against CPA passing game. CPA will put up a fight against LA, but I am realistic and see LA by 14 at least.
  19. They should have to refund everyone. What a joke.
  20. If Laws had been healthy, they would have made the 2 PT tries with him running the ball.
  21. CPA lost to FRA and Cane Ridge with Crews Law on the sideline and before Keck emerged as a game changing RB. They easily are worth 7-10 points per game. If you watch the last 3-4 games you will see what I mean. Law is usually the best defensive player on the field and the team leader. Keck has been a game breaker the last 3-4 games. As a CPA fan, I am realistic about their slim chances in a rematch with LA, but I think they will win this weekend putting them in the finals for the 5th year in a row.
  22. LA has better overall talent, IMO, and has been the only team to stop CPA running attack (including Oakland). That is the key to beating CPA. Wide open game favors LA. LA should win IF Luther is not having an off day and limits mistakes. CPA has to play pretty perfect, control clock, and put pressure on LA with some long 2nd and 3rd down yardages by containing Broome. 4th year in a row for CPA in finals, so seniors are pretty well tested in big games.
  23. Oakland is in another class of football compared to LA and CPA and anyone would be nuts to think they could be upset by these two teams. HOWEVER, coaching and scheming is huge in high school and LA and CPA has good ones. They will compete and if they have good special team play, and limit turnovers and penalties these could be 10 point spreads. I am a CPA fan, but I like LA's chances against Oakland a little better because of their quick strike ability. I predict Oakland by 10 over LA and by 17 over CPA.
