Following an illegal move the wrestler gets 2 minutes of recovery time, and if a head neck or cervical injury is suspected the wrestler gets 5 minutes for a medical professional to look at them.

Still not enough time to be certain that the KID is ok.

I've been on both sides of this and I can tell you only one thing.  If you don't want to get DQd, don't hit illegal moves.

  2. The rule is in place to protect kids.  I saw the video and Griggs clearly hit his head hard and both officials agreed immediately that the return was illegal.

Injury time is only 1.5 minutes.  There is no way to be sure that a 16-17 year old kid is ok during that short window of time,. especially when trying to evaluate a possible head injury.  It doesn't make the kid a chickens**t or a coward at all.

    Its a good rule.

  3. When Tygard took over Blackman a TON of kids quit... and coaches too.  I think if you want to beat Oakland, you have to hire a guy who can get us better in the trenches.  Hate it, but our O and D lines have been soft as butter.  Oakland has their head wrestling coach out there coaching linemen.  It has made a huge difference.  Watch film of Oakland's linemen vs Blackman.  Our kids arent strong and gritty and that is why we are getting beat.

One of the biggest mistakes I ever seen at Blackman was back in 2009 or 2010 when they took out the weight room at the middle school.  They used to have a nice weight room across from the gym near coaches office, and Coach Greene had those kids in middle school excited about getting stronger.  Plus, he was teaching them proper lifting technique so when they got across the road, they knew what they were doing.  The last class to have that benefit was the 2013 team which went the semis.... and only lost to Maryville because Shad switched it up to try to showcase Jauan's arm.  They were bigger and stronger than any Blackman team since that time.

  4. I have also been at Blackman for many many years as well, and have been close to athletics at both school for years. I can say this.  Pierce has been an extremely reliable and successful fixture in the Blackman community since about 2016.  I have heard from some parents that he and the Tygard didnt see eye to eye on some things, but so what.  Maybe that has driven some of the talk.  However, he is still here, and he has had plenty of opportunities to leave.  He sure appears to be Blackman thru and thru to me.

  5. I've said this before and I'll keep beating this dead horse forever..., If those linemen would get in that wrestling room and develop some toughness, things would be different.

And I will say this, Justin Brown was the best athlete on that field tonight, and no one wanted to win more than he did.  I could see that in every rep he played.  While most football players are content to just play, he competes!

Great turnaround for the Blaze this season.  Need to fix a few things but much improved from last season.

So the kicker is very good?  I would assume if he could kick deep and get touchbacks then that would be the way to go. I bet the coaches would rather see a touchback, non return and ball spotted on the 20 to start every drive.

All this from a guy who once SWORE that he would delete his account and never be seen again if Mt Juliet lost a playoff game...... which they promptly lost.  :thumb:

I read somewhere that in High School, most kickoff returns leave the offense starting at the 38-42 yard line on average.  With really good play, maybe an average of the 35 yard line.  Now, onside kicks usually average about the 47 yard line.  So about 10 yards difference in the two kicks on average.  Sure, sometimes the kicking team does better, but when they have a bad play, you are giving up long runs or potential touchdowns.

Having the opportunity to get an extra possession and the resulting incredible momentum is often of greater value to some coaches than the 10-15 yards of field position...  especially when you dont have to worry about speedy running backs taking a deep kick to the house on you while you are playing many of your non-starters on special teams.

When the game is tight, it is still hard to watch.  LOL

And Blackmans kicker is very good btw!

Like what Tygard is doing to turn around the football team, it’s very hard when a school has split population but I gotta say man he almost handed Stewarts Creek that game, jack has got to learn how to use his eyes better cause he throws a int every time he stares down. If it’s broke don’t fix it they were watching ben the whole game and Justin and Jacob was wide open almost every time down the field it’s no reason to stop feeding those guys. A team like the red hawks I would have stopped kicking onside kicks to pin them deep they had no offense and threw up a prayer to score on a pass, Blackman dbs play way too deep on defense and the linebackers still don’t break on the plays quick enough. Just a thought for the screen plays I’d like to see them fake blocks and take off like sark use to run with Alabama wideouts. Oakland wins next week 56-34 unless Blackman can apply pressure ,stop tackling so high on every play they won’t have a chance just being honest. Screen game won’t work vs Oakland cause the dbs and linebackers will close out too fast.

Agree. Why weren't they throwing the ball to Brown?  What did he get... like two balls?  And he was one on one with his defender...

Same thing I said, Blackman just lacks physicality in the trenches

This was a glaring truth last night.  I wonder what all those linemen could do in the football off-season to build physicality, endurance and balance while learning to win lots of individual man on man battles?

  10. "But the State tournament is to find out which kids are the top kids in the state"

Yes.  That happens no matter how many kids are in the bracket.  Right?
No one said that everyone needs a trophy.   Nothing of the sort.  What I am saying is that wrestling needs to increase in popularity, participation, and visibility.  Having smaller numbers of kids at the state championship events runs counter to those ideas.

Some of you would probably be happy to  just send the sectional winners to state.  Then you can have 4 man brackets with only the best kids.  Boy wouldnt that be awesome.  Heck, maybe Brentwood or Franklin would just do it in their gym after school and it wouldnt even take three days.  smh...

Here we go the idea of every body should get a trophy just because they walk out on the mat. That’s why they have beginner tournaments and JV state to have opportunities for kids that maybe aren’t normally gonna place at State or a Top 100. But the State tournament is to find out which kids are the top kids in the state. This whole excuse of wrestling is not growing because of competition is bs. Wrestling is a tough sport that doesn’t bring in a lot money and that’s why it suffers in numbers and growth. It’s absolutely what’s wrong with this world now that people think it’s not fair to other kids to find out exactly who is the best period. Quit with every body needs a trophy bs for a sport to grow.

I have never understood why anyone would be against having one state champion for individual sports unless they are selfish.  If you are the best swimmer at 50m, wrestler at 285lb, bowler, sprinter at 100m, etc… you are the best.  We have done nothing more than raise two generations of soft individuals by telling them they are not good enough to compete against people with more advantages.  The fact is that when these young athletes become adults they will have to compete against those same individuals for jobs.  Place everyone back together for one true individual state champion and don’t keep team scores.

In my opinion, this kind of thinking is why wrestling is not growing amongst high school age boys and why wrestling was almost eliminated from the Olympics.   Boys participation numbers are slipping (or just barely staying steady) over the last few years.   How many NCAA programs have been lost in the last three decades?

The whole idea of "Oh boy!!  Let's see who the best is!!" is not where we need to be these days.  If you want to see that, go to Super 32, VA Beach, The Grappler, Fargo, etc.  A lot of people from Tennessee take their kids to those tournaments.  (Especially those Greenville kids yall are talking about who are all doing so well).

No one at Super 32 cares that you the best kid from Tennessee in your weight class.  All the kids at those tournaments are good.  I promise you the fact that you are a state champ from TN won't matter once your bout number comes up.

I have to ask, why trade what you want right now for what you really want the most?  I would love to see the D1 champs vs the D2 champs too, but I want wrestling to grow and get more popular more.

  12. Beware.  Rant ahead.

A few things.  The board of control.  Most of the members have no skin in the game for wrestling.  While several of them are from schools that technically have wrestling programs, Bradley and Warren County are really the only schools who are invested in wrestling year in and year out.  (no offense to Hamblen or CR or those who are trying)

    Morristown-Hamblen High School West
    Memphis Central High School
    Evangelical Christian School
    Donelson Christian Academy
    Webb School of Knoxville
    Cane Ridge High School
    Milan High School
    Bradley Central High School
    Warren Co. Schools (Director)
    Loretto High School
    Trinity Christian Academy
    Fulton High School

Who are the "wrestling schools" in that list?

So when Mark Reeves or anyone else makes a suggestion regarding wrestling, they are almost always going to go a long with what his proposals are.  They dont know any better.  "A sixteen man bracket over three days?  Sure, sounds good to us."  Obviously, the board of control does not understand the sport of wrestling.

The 16 man bracket for AA is a load of crap too.  It does not hurt to have a 32 man bracket for the large schools.  For you purists out there who cry about only the best making it to state, the best kids are going to be there regardless.  Why shut out a bunch of kids who are on the fringe of being the best?  It doesnt hurt the tournament for them to be there and get put out on the first day. Now, a lot of schools will no longer have a state qualifier.

"Oh tell them to work harder."  No.  That doesn't cut it.  If you really care about wrestling, you would want to give every kid the chance to learn and appreciate what wrestling offers... regardless if they have a mediocre coach, or are in a small town, or have administration that isnt supportive.  More kids need to "make it to state".

A couple of years ago, at the state tournament, there were a lot of schools who only had one kid,  Teams like Kingsbury, South Doyle, Karns, Hillsboro.  When is the next time you are gonna see one of those kids at state?  Its gonna be a cold day in heck.....  I'm sure that will be good for recruiting wrestlers at those schools.  "Our last state qualifier was 5 years ago."  "Yeah Coach, no thanks."

And from another angle, there are a lot more kids in AA schools than A schools, but the same number make it to state?

According to the TSSAA website, AA has 126,773 students.  Single A has only 60,735.  Double the numbers, but the same size bracket for the state tournament?  Was someone worried that the A schools were going to be mad?

Girls - - I want the girls, but I have been told that the boy's bracket might have been cut to stay in line with what is offered for girls.  I would think that if the girls had the numbers that the boys had, it would make sense to have a 32 man bracket for them as well.

Sub-State - No reason for it.  I have yet to hear what was broken about our old system.

Bottom line, as I have said many times, the more kids wrestling in the championship event, the better off wrestling will be in Tennessee.  We need to see more schools sending their teams to the state tournament with police escorts.  We need to see more billboards congratulating wrestlers making it to state.  We need to see more kids going back home and telling their friends about how they finally made it to state.  We need more mons and dads posting their kids picture on Facebook.  We dont need less of any of those things.
