  1. The Bearden tourney this weekend should set the table a little bit on who will do well in the East.
  2. Always a great tournament though always sloppy field conditions. We will see if the French drains do the trick this year.
  3. Tough break that no 9AAA is represented in state again this year.
  4. For the record - though there are great teams in the East there are also great teams in the Mid-State. Don't get hung up on Farragut and Bearden dominance in the early 2000's. I still look for the day when someone new breaks through like Franklin. Known for great girls soccer the boys have finally stepped up to show they can play too...and typically in dominating fashion. Past Soccer Champions (I hope this is accurate since pulled from TSSAA) 2013 - Franklin (Central) 2012 - Brentwood (Central) 2011 - Hardin Valley (East) 2010 - Hendersonville (Central) 2009 - Farragut (East) 2008 - Brentwood (Central) 2007 - Farragut (East) 2006 - Bearden (East) 2005 - Brentwood (Central) 2004 - Farragut (East) 2003 - Farragut (East) 2002 - Bearden (East) 2001 - Bearden (East) 2000 - Houston (West) 1999 - Houston (West) 1998 - Hendersonville (Central)
  5. Ryan Bristol played out of his mind that night but Centennial was a very complete team and they did score against Farragut. Needless to say there is no such thing as a guaranty in soccer...period. I do think Franklin is the best team I have seen in years (not sure if as good as last year) but they like any other team are beatable. There is as much pressure between their ears to repeat as between the ears of their opponent to play their best game.
  6. Honestly I would hope no parent is doing the travel thing because they think there will be some big scholarship at the end of it. If your child is that good they have already been identified and are playing in the elite level of the game and probably won't even be playing high school soccer. That being said there are all kinds of places to continue to play and enjoy soccer post high school graduation. D2, D3, NAIA, and college club teams are all available to solid players, some small number of which will be able to break the glass ceiling and move on to play at a semi-professional level and even fewer might rise to professional. It does not matter what state your player plays in when it comes to true talent it is recognized very early on typically before a kid ever makes it to high school. There are always a few late bloomers but I say enjoy high school soccer for what it represents to you and your school. Where else do your peers come to cheer you on and not just your parents.
  7. 20 years ago was the last time Hendersonville did not advance. They caught a very tough break in their game against Mt. Juliet when they were awarded a goal off a corner kick. Center ref wrote the score in his book and sent everybody to center for the post goal re-start. After the Mt. Juliet coach complained the ref had inadvertently blown the whistle, the ref overturned himself and pulled the score off the board. Hendersonville was winning 4-3 in regulation at that point but was brought back to 3-3. I have seen this happen before but I have never seen the point come off the board. All that being said Mt. Juliet played an excellent game and looked nothing like the team Hendersonville had played earlier in the year.
  8. The Farragut/Hardin Valley score was no surprise. Those teams always tend to beat up on each other and often times a little momentum, a little more heart, or a little more luck is the deciding factor. That loss may be just the prescription Farragut needed to ensure another state final.
  9. On the surface you might say Franklin vs Farragut for the state championship; however, that totally discounts how hard it is to get through their own district tournaments and the other teams that will eventually make it to state in their own right. Still fun food for thought but nothing that happens on the way to the finish line is ever set in stone. Teams like Independence, Overton, Station Camp, Antioch, Bartlett, Centennial, Hendersonville, Maryville, and Cleveland as well as others may have something to say about who makes it to state in AAA. I do miss hearing from the Bearden fans but don't expect that will last long.
  10. As of today there are 17 teams that are still undefeated. Who has the best chance of remaining that way and why. Team W-L Record Farragut 10-0 Science Hill 10-0 Signal Mountain 10-0 CAK 10-0 Hume-Fogg 10-0 BGA 9-0 Houston 9-0 Munford 9-0 Bartlett 8-0 Franklin 7-0 Murfreesboro Central Magnet 7-0 Knoxville Webb 6-0 Friendship Christian 5-0 Centennial 5-0 Campbell County 4-0 Antioch 3-0 Berean Christian 2-0
  11. On a cursory overview there are a lot of games on the docket for tomorrow. Here are some of the match ups that stand out to me. Please give us your thoughts. Some I base on records and some on districts and some on what these games mean in the scheme of things. Page 9-3 vs BGA 9-0 - interesting match up Webb School 6-1-1 vs FRA 5-3-3 - two teams on the right track CAK 10-0-2 vs Knox Webb 6-0 - can anyone knock off CAK? Baylor 10-2 vs MBA 5-1-2 - can MBA end the season as a 1 loss team Collierville 8-1-3 vs Evangelical Christian 7-1 - state vs private Hardin Valley 8-1-1 vs Bearden 5-5-1 - You know Bearden will show up for this one. Cleveland 8-3-2 vs East Ridge 8-3 - match made in heaven Hendersonville 8-4 vs Wilson Central 3-1-1 - can 1 loss Wilson Central pull the upset? Brentwood 6-1-2 vs Independence 7-2 - whoa nelly!
  12. With district play starting to heat up I thought it would be good to have a place to talk about big games or big rivalries that are getting ready to take place before district tournaments and what they mean to the big picture. Not all districts are forgone conclusions so it would be cool if we could get some fans to show us why the think their team can win it all or pull off the upset.
  13. Station Camp might have something to say about that top 3 list. I think it is safe to say there is probably a top 4 list in no particular order.
  14. This topic is apparently not going anywhere so let me get it started. I will offer an early evaluation of District 9 AAA in alphabetical order. Beech High School - Beech has some very good players and good coaching just not enough depth. I believe their record today is 2-3-2 with 2 district losses to Mt. Juliet (Last years district champ and Lebanon). They could spoil for anybody but will have to improve a lot to win the district. Gallatin High School - Gallatin always has a good base of physical players that have speed and can defend. Their current record is 3-4-1 with 1 district victory over Portland. They have a quality win over White House Heritage, and 3 of their losses are to powerhouse East TN teams (Bearden, Science Hill, Hardin Valley). They have a few quick players who are tricky around the goal. I expect they will be one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the district. Hendersonville High School - HHS has one of the most solid teams from top to bottom in the district they are also very young. Losing, I believe, 8 starting seniors from last year. Though it is a rebuilding year they have a record of 5-3 with their losses coming to Father Ryan, Science Hill, and CAK. Along with those losses they are 2-0 in district play beating Lebanon and Portland. The top 3 spots in the district are up for grabs so we will just have to see how willing the upper classmen are to providing the right kind of leadership to their young team. Lebanon High School - Lebanon has a talented group of kids but again not enough depth to go around. Their record of 1-2-1 has a quality district victory over Beech but they were unable to put the ball in the goal against Wilson Central and their only score against Hendersonville was a PK. Mt. Juliet High School - The Bears are looking to repeat as district champs. Last year they beat Hendersonville 3 times in overtime and they would like to use that momentum to keep the program moving forward. They are off to a good start with a 2-1 record beating district rival Beech and their only loss coming from a close match with a very good Oakland HS team. They meet up with Cookeville on April 7th which should be their biggest match so far this year. Portland High School - The Panthers should get an "A" for effort. Portland is a little off the beaten path from most of the club soccer action so they do the best they can with a lot of raw talent and heart. They are not a skilled soccer team they use the assets they have to pressure the other team in hopes of creating opportunities. I would say they may have the opportunity to win a district game and that should be the first thing to check off their list. They currently have a record of 1-2 with two district losses to Hendersonville and Gallatin and a victory over East Robertson. Station Camp High School - The Bison's may be in the position to make some noise in district 9. With a stellar defense and some talented mid-fielders and strikers they can go as far as their ability to score can take them. Their record of 4-2 supports quality wins but no district play yet and their only losses have come from what looks to be a good Collierville team and powerhouse private school Christ Presbyterian. Wilson Central High School - With a record of 2-0-1 the Wildcats have a district win over Lebanon and no losses. Their first big test comes up Thursday, April 3rd against district rival Station Camp. Wilson Central is usually in the mix with several strong club teams in the area to draw their talent from. They always play with tenacity and they always bring a good following of fans with them. Tell us about your district!
  15. If you really want to see a district begin to succeed you have to get kids involved in a good club soccer program at a young age. If the district that serves your high school does not have club soccer then only the kids who want to excel at the sport will travel to an area where there are good clubs to play with and that is just not enough players in a district to get the job done at a higher level. Bring club soccer to your community if you don't have a good club soccer program near by. It is a big endeavor but call TN State Soccer Assn. and find out what it takes to get a program going. After that it is finding coaches that really understand the game. I know a number of coaches throughout the state that are doing the best they can to allow their school to sponsor the sport for their student body but have never actually played the game of soccer themselves. If a team has a coach who is just stepping up to do the job it really is no different than asking a basketball coach to come coach your football team. They can learn a lot but it will take a lot of time to understand where players can play and succeed in a high school soccer environment.
  16. Merrol Hyde is an up and comer and I do expect they will have a great result in the district. Coach Carr has a very strong understanding of the game, knows how to evaluate players strengths and weaknesses and how to put them in a position to succeed. They have a new home field this year that they should be proud of and I know the players will put forth the effort to repeat and enhance the great season they had last year.
  17. I don't understand why schools hosting tournaments don't think it is important to make sure the word is out on the tournament schedule. Just got back from Bearden and it seems every year I have no idea who is playing except my high schools opponents. The tournament schedule should always be on the hosting teams web-site easily found.
  18. I agree White House will be very strong but they are nowhere close to last years team offensively. Unfortunately for them they had 3 big player losses which include the top returning scorer who is now playing year around travel soccer instead of playing for the high school. Defensively they will still be strong and steady so it will take a different style of play from what they were able to offer last year. I saw White House Heritage play in the Gallatin tournament and they looked very good. Although I am not sure if they won any games they were fast and solid from top to bottom. They could certainly give White House a run for their money. I haven't seen MTCS but I do expect a good result from them as well. I don't expect White House to run the table unless they can find more ways to score.
  19. CAK is always such a great side. Win or lose I have to root for White House.
  20. It took me awhile to figure out this was last year's post. I kept scratching my head trying to figure it out.
  21. I had IThankTThanks BigG I had not been on top of that news. It only makes sense that would be the case since I found out they made the original change after the fact too. lol
  22. One thing is for sure...if you can't keep Dobyns-Bennett from scoring you won't have a chance. I also noticed you picked little known Antioch to knock off undefeated Franklin. My prediction also.
  23. To me the question is not so much about whether you do or don't allow your regular season champ to get an automatic bid to the region as much as consistency throughout all regions. Why have two of the top regions in the state elected to go this direction? Secondly why allow them to even play in the district championships period as they may now knock of the next best team from making it to regions. I don't get it and probably never will.
  24. Your post sounds like mine from last year when Independence beat Brentwood and did not advance to state.
  25. 2010 the last time they won the state championship. They lost to Station Camp then had to beat Station Camp again in regions to advance to state.
