  1. thanks... so it's similar to USA Today ranking for basketball? I always thought the USA Today bball ranking was bogus... how legit is a "national ranking" if you don't play the teams ranked above or below you? Who is grading/judging these teams? Oh well! State rankings/championships are very special, and worthy of mention!!
  2. 2010 Battle of West Knoxville rd. 1 starts tonight... does everyone see this game a blowout in Admiral's favor? Bearden has the better coach, Farragut has better players. Farragut playing on their field, with more to lose (#2 national ranking) spells disaster for Bearden. Farragut will win 5-0. I'd love to see an upset, but the Dawgs can't hang with this Farragut team. I have only seen Bearden play this year, but hear Farragut is dynamite. Hope to make it tonight, IF my lady friend doesn't want a date night. Also... didn't even know there was a national ranking system until I read the KNS article on tonight's game. What's the deal? Is that a true national championship like college sports? Is there a national tournament, like for the state champs to play in to decide a national winner? I played soccer around here, but never heard of national rankings. Maybe because we weren't good enough back then to even be considered! Someone fill me. What does everyone else on here think about the game...?
  3. OnThePitch... does that mean if MoWest wins you will identify yourself? You and Dins always provide excellent feedback and analysis of games from around the area, and entire state for that matter, why not reveal who you are so we can all know who the brains of the soccer community really is? What is your playing and coaching background? Did you play locally, coach nationally... what is your resume? Same goes for Dins, if you're reading! On another note... I saw parts of the the Bearden/West, Maryville/TN High, OR/Farragut games. Great early season soccer. I would rank them the following way: 1-Maryville, 2-Bearden, 3-Farragut, 4-OR, 5-West, 6-TN High. Although MHS played a weaker opponent, they are the best at this stage of the season. Traveling to West TN so early in the season will help them, and based on what I saw, they are the front runner to win the title from East TN. In years past, Maryville couldn't win the big game, but with a new coach with new energy and system in place, Maryille will be the last East TN team standing. One Maryville parent told me that the school, players, and parents have a renewed excitement this year for the season. Early season warning: watch out for the Rebels! That said, MoWest might surprise me this weekend and I hope to see a new team rise to the top! Also... there is some talk on this thread about coaching ability vs. player talent. I submit that West Knoxville typically has the better talent than in other parts of Knoxville, so you would think that anyone could coach them to championships. Not so! The coaching ability is obvious when both Turner and Culbreth have returned trophies to both schools. The parent support is also phenomenal at both. Don't forget that although the parents don't hire the coach initially, we do have the ability to pressure the AD's to retain/replace the coaches if we feel like our kids are not receiving the highest quality of mentoring, coaching, and discipline. My point is, where talent and coaching is absolutely #1 and #2 in the hierarchy of success, the parents at both schools drive a degree of the championship model as well. I commend Bearden, Farragut, CAK, Catholic, West, Maryville, and Webb on their consistency to produce winning seasons and playoff success year after year. Show me a championship team, and I'll show you a program with talent, great coach, and tremendous parent involvement. I look forward to the season, and as a parent with years of soccer background in both girls and boys seasons, it's exciting to witness the enthusiasm throughout Knoxville and East TN. Now that mine are graduated, I hope to be entertained in the stands of schools from around the area. My best to all!
  4. I agree. National rankings in HS sports are a joke.
  5. Oh, please. Great season for Brentwood, without a doubt. Congratulations on your victory. If I were a Bruin player, fan, coach, or parent, I'd be excited too. But ease off the trash talk when they are several factors against you. #1, Bearden and Farragut didn't play Brentwood this year, so we don't know who actually is better. #2, my research reveals that your beloved Bruin senior class lost to Bearden in '06 and '07. Bearden 2, Brentwood 0. That is not domination by Brentwood - they were lucky not to run into Bearden or Farragut on their way to the championship in "their" years. #3, Bearden won titles in '01, '02, and '06. Farragut won in '03, '04, and '07. Farragut/Bearden 6, Brentwood 2. #4, The "National Championship" you claim is skewed. Not even half of the boys teams in America play soccer in the Spring. The most competitive states play boys soccer in the Fall. I know Bearden "won" a National Championship a few years back, and Farragut was either runner-up or won one as well. They too were only "National Champions" of the states that actually play soccer during their season. You get my drift? Let someone else blow your horn, son. Futhermore, line up against Bearden or Farragut and actually defeat them on the field - then we'll give you more respect. Until then, East still dominates. I encourage you to praise your team and broadcast to the world how wonderful it feels to win a championship. However, leave the teams who dominate you out of the conversation. I agree and support what Hoya said: East 6, Middle 3. You're half way to breakin even. Good luck next year.
  6. I agree. The goals were nice, but they were not reflective of the game as a whole. West packs the box, and is boring when they attack; Farragut is sloppy. Nice midfield play for the Admirals, but the offensive 3rd is a disaster. West has 3-4 players on the field who stand out, but very little fluidity to their play. Farragut is forgettable, posing no attack except for set plays. #8 and #22 are Farragut's best, and only real threat. Unfortunately, the better team did not win Tuesday night, and West benefitted from an inexperienced goalie. 2/3 should not have scored. Looked pretty, but saveable.
  7. Good question, but unfortunately the foul Muth committed warrants a straight red card, thus overriding the previous yellow. He will be suspended two games. Fun game to watch, and I'm glad it was delayed since I was busy the night before. Here's my viewpoint as a referee... I don't see the foul as cheap, but rather a violation of the rules like all other fouls committed in a game. Think about it, every time you commit a foul in soccer, break the line of scrimmage in football, "reach in" at basketball, it's a foul. Just like Muth's infraction, he was playing "the game" just like all players in a competitive sport. That's why we have referees. Now, if he committed an egregious foul away from play while the referee's back was turned, or, if Farragut snuck an extra player on the field, then call it cheap and dirty. Muth knew exactly what would come to him during the process of tackling the player to the ground. It wasn't cheap, it was smart, but results an unfortunate consequence. And, by the way... for anyone who says that a foul like that is a "cheap way to win," or, "I'd never want to win that way," sounds like they never played at a competitive level. If you are close enough to an opponent and do not prevent him from strolling into your goal, I would question your athletic character. Here's why: does the rule say, "do not foul," or, "if a player fouls, this is is the consequence..." And furthermore, 80 minutes of soccer decides a match, not one play. Maryville did not lose, and Farragut did not win on that play. MHS lost because their offense is futile, and they did not score during flow of play. Few shots on goal. FHS won because their offense was relentless, albiet scoring on set plays, but overpowered the Rebel attack. Keep in mind Rebel fans, you lost the game playing up one man. At the end of the day, therefore, congratulations Farragut on your "cheap" win, down 11-10.
