  1. I been around here a long time and I can’t ever remember Cookeville playing in a sectional/sub state game.  So I sure have not seen them at a state tournament.  Last thing some of you younger ones might not know is that the state tournament has not always been held in Murfreesboro.  When I was in high school it was at Vanderbilt.  I was told before my time it alternated sites from West, Middle. and East Tennessee.

I think everyone needs to just accept that CC’s schedule is Weak. And that ridiculous trip to NH was a Field Trip for the girls. Nothing more Nothing less. We can discuss the decisions about NOT Playing in a real tournament with real competition. Obviously they didn’t do anything that long weekend to improve. But they are really talented. Yes they should have gone to play in Florida or even a better tournament in ET. Or in SC.
The season is winding down now. So we’ll see how prepared they are to play teams with equal talent in the playoffs. I HOPE that they go to the State. But the AD and Coach make me wonder why they have waisted opportunities to play better teams and improve. Well find out soon enough if they’re ready to compete. This team definitely has the talent. But I’m wondering IF they would’ve been a little more prepared if their schedule and tournaments were a little more competitive. Jus sayin

I was told by someone who should know that they were supposed to play in Florida and the tournament got cancelled.  So they were scrambling to find any tournament to play in.

The kid from Jackson county shoots almost all of their shots (it’s something to see). I’ve not seen a high school team that just lets a kid shoot 80% of their shots and all of the other players and parents be ok. He can score but he needs a clear line of sight to do it. Just my .02.

Monterey has a kid that will shoot a huge percentage of their teams shots.  He probably should shoot the most because he is their best scorer.  I would say 80% of shots would be not good for any teams chemistry.  I think not having other options hurts the team.  It is easier to guard one person than five.

AAA Grant Slatten from White County

    A  Grant Strong Clay County

I will be shocked if both don’t make it and not sure both shouldn’t win.  Both face double and triple teams every game and still average over 30 each.  Strong has improved so much.  I am not sure where he is going to college but he is at least a mid-major and of course Slatten going to Ole Miss.

In my opinion, the best players don’t just score, they make their teammates better.  Pretty sure both boys also lead their team in assists.  Definitely 2 of the best that have played in Upper Cumberland in a long time.

I have said in every post that I will give you Edwards at Clay County, he is a good coach with good talent. All of his players play hard and are good young men so we will leave him out of this equation. In 2014 Monterey won 21 games which is good by any stretch of the imagination. So 4 out of the last 6 years Monterey has had good winning seasons. We will right that off as West being lucky. If my records are correct since 2014 Clarkrange has had 1 winning season, not making the Sub-State.  Since 2014 Jackson County has had 3 winning seasons not making the Sub-State.  4 out of the last 6 years Monterey has had 4 winning seasons made it to the Sub-State twice and the State Tournament and could possibly make another appearance but some how West isn't near the coach that Pyle or Thomas are. I am missing something here. I am an old man and did not go to school at any of these schools but I believe in giving credit where credit is due. You will have to help me with your way of thinking sometime but I believe I have proved my point.

Wrong.  JC made substate in 2016 under different coach who never had losing record in district.  That was last season he coached.

What is up with Livingston Academy? They were a powerhouse for a while. I know Jackson County has been down too. I know they have a team full of freshman now we played them this summer. Our JV did. They may be back in a couple of years.

Not sure why anyone would want to take this job. If they will fire Leslie they will fire anyone else too.  My last guess is they have some other LOCAL person to replace her.....

MVP race will be interesting.  Probably a 2 horse race with Marsh(RBS) and West(MHS).  Strong kid from Clay will likely be next choice but other 2 are more valuable to their team IMO.  I do think Strong kid will be great player before he is done but would not make him MVP this year. Anyway, my 2 cents worth.

After watching several games last few weeks I definitely think West should be MVP of district.  Brings it every night and if you take him off that team they probably finish in bottom 3 of district.  He definitely makes all his teammates better.  Marsh should be 2nd and I would go with Strong and Ashlock has 3rd and 4th.  Still think if Strong can shoot 3 little better he may have most college potential.

This year for district 6 is a virtual toss up between Clay, Monterey, Pickett, RBS, & Gordonsville. Monterey went to Clay County Tues night and ran into a buzz saw! Clay County is a force to be reckoned with again this year! The Strong kid is amazing! I'm looking forward to how this year shakes out!!

    1. Clay County--most talent overall, way deeper than anyone else in district.

2/3.  Monterey/RBS--Teams are very different but both rely on one player to get most of their offense.

4/5.  Gordonsville/Pickett Co--I could see either team filling in last spot to make the region.

6/7.  Jackson Co./Trousdale--Both have guys that can play.  Consistent play just not there for either yet.

    8.  Clarkrange--least talented team but wouldn't surprise me if they beat someone in district tournament.

I don't believe the district to be a toss up.  I think Clay has the best team.  It would not shock me if they get beat again in district but only if they don't play to potential.

Riverdale has strong talent but until the Hayes sisters leave they are just a lot of individuals playing every night.  They are a great talent but they also are a great curse for that program.

I want to start out by saying I am totally unbiased to either of these teams.  The best player on the floor was the point guard from Houston County, not the Hayes girls or big girl from Houston County that’s going to Mississippi State.

Clarkrange struggled with a bad Moore County team  and gets drilled today.  Region 3 was weaker this year than it has been in a while.

I have said all year Upper Cumberland basketball not as good has in years past, boys and girls.  I think this post season has proved us both correct.

Wanted to say I am disappointed that the Clay County girls aren't gonna be there. One of the best teams in the state in my opinion. Class act, well coached, and have some of the best players around anywhere. Would have been great for 6A to be represented by both Clay and Clarkrange. Great season for the girls from Clay. May have came up short but says nothing of how good they are.

I am disappointed also.  I heard that Clay only scored two points in 4th quarter of game last night.  Is this true?

  12. I was at the game and it just seemed like after half time the Meigs coach did not care if his team won the game or not.  Also, I think it was #23 for Meigs that seemed to be a player but hardly played the second half.  Just wondered if she got hurt or coach was not pleased with her in some way

  13. Well said by play4fun.  Best team won but I thought Pickett got worst of it, especially early.  Clay county guard, number 20, was difference in my opinion.  I would to know how it would of come out had technicals not occured but I still think Clay would of won.  Even before the technicals Pickett girls seemed to be frustrated by officials.  Maybe rematch down road...

So Smith and Cannon advance. Does anyone know the logic behind the double bye bracket? What was wrong with 1v8 etc?

That would be to simple.  My guess is Dana wanted it this way.  Her teams almost always finish top 2 in district.  Smart by her but not to smart for teams that consistently finish in bottom portion of district.

White County be lucky to finish 3rd in district, much less third best team in state.  I am not knocking them either.  They have won some big games early.

Hmmmm. ..may have been on to something long time ago.  I do believe when they get point back they be much better.  However, all those cupcake wins early really showing up now.
