  2. I agree on the strength of the tournament. Good one to be a part of. Congrats to Scottsboro and Oak Mountain. Not the finish either had hoped for -- but both finished in a respectable spot. And yes, Brandon Womack is a junior this year -- now going for his 5th title (103, 103, 112, 126). Good luck to him and Scottsboro going forward.
  3. Congrats to Bob Jones (AL)!! Losing some of their guys to the new James Clemens High School may have weakened the team, but it strengthened the growth of programs for us. (Our state is severely lacking in case no one has noticed.)

  5. Congrats to McCallie on the overall. All pool and bracket results are on TrackWrestling. Click here. The only one (for whatever reason) still not listed on TrackWrestling is the 160 Final. I know Clark (Bob Jones) dec Martino (McCallie) by 1. I couldn't make it this year, but from what I've heard...that was one of the best matches. Nothing but good to say about Martino from both Clark and his dad.

  7. Are you sure it's not going to be Will Smith? It could tie in to a movie project....
  8. Oh...well,.....why didn't you say so in the first place? If it's posted on the forums at TheMat.com (or any internet forum for that matter), then it must be true. There's no other explanation necessary. /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> I think I'm with texas23 here. There was no claim of anything in the opening post --- only a statement (with pic) that the school welcomed him....as in, for a camp. If this is legit, there will be true press coverage soon. If so, congrats in a big way. If not, congrats to those who passed it off as such.
  9. http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2009/ju...o-coach-at-utc/ Chattanooga Times Free-Press - Saturday, July 11, 2009 Eslinger to coach at UTC Alumnus selected for Mocs wrestlers By: Ward Gossett (Contact) University of Tennessee at Chattanooga alumnus Heath Eslinger has been hired as the school's wrestling coach. The official announcement will come at 2 p.m. today at the Hall of Fame Room in McKenzie Arena. "We weren't making a decision based on what's best for the program for the next six to 12 months but for the next six to 10 years," UTC athletic director Rick Hart said Friday. Eslinger was a three-time Southern Conference champion for the Mocs and the league's wrestler of the year in 2000 after winning two state championships for Bradley Central High School. He was the state-tournament "outstanding wrestler" in 1995. He and Illinois assistant Carl Perry were the only two candidates who had on-campus interviews, but Hart and the selection committee reviewed more than two dozen applications and pared the list twice before arriving at those two. "I'm very satisfied," Hart said. "The process was very inclusive, very thorough. We have identified the best person to lead our program at this time." Eslinger, Cleveland High School head coach the past two seasons, served as Mocs assistant coach under Terry Brands from 2001 to '04. "I'm very excited," Eslinger said. "I have been on the phone all day with guys on the team. I want to make sure everybody is on the same page. I want to start getting calendars out for when we're going to train. I want to hit the ground running. It's nothing new, just a new place." When he applied for the job, he had some reservations. "I don't think I had doubts, but I had concerns because I was so happy (at Cleveland)," he said. "With all you see in the news about wrestling (programs being dropped), I wanted to make sure the security was there." Eslinger also wanted to make sure he would be comfortable as a member of the UTC athletic family. "When I went for the interview, it was going to have to be a picture-perfect situation for me to take this job, and when I walked out of (Hart's) office Thursday, it was pretty clear that he is a guy I want to work for and the rest of the staff are people I look forward to working with," Eslinger said. The Mocs have had three head coaches this decade with Joe Seay following Brands and then yielding to Chris Bono, who resigned to return to Iowa State as the Cyclones' assistant head coach. The departures had been a concern among the program's supporters, so it didn't hurt Eslinger's chances to be an alum and someone who has spent most of his life in the Chattanooga area. Hart hired Russ Huesman, another alum, earlier this year as the school's football coach. "It was among factors that were considered, but we felt both people we brought in were committed to providing us with stability and continuity," Hart said. "Being an alum wasn't a minus. You're not going to see us hiring an alum every time a job comes open. That wasn't our goal. Just like the football search, we hired the guy who was the best fit. "Any time you're familiar with a program and people associated with the program, it can help you, and it probably helped him. Heath can build relations more quickly because he's been here, but we didn't get too caught up in that. Now that Heath is coming here, certainly it will be a positive." There were other attributes, though, that Hart and the selection committee picked up. "There were some things in common with me and the people who shared their thoughts," the AD said. "He has an enthusiasm and a passion for working with student-athletes and understanding that wrestling is a conduit to getting an education and preparing yourself for leading a productive and meaningful life. When we talked about our mission and values, Heath was very much in step with that."
  10. Seems to be a great hire for the Mocs. Looking for good things to come. Thanks for the article, B.B.!
  11. To be fair, this article had more info. http://www.gazette.com/news/child-58029-in...et-springs.html Springs wrestling official arrested on suspicion of Internet child luring July 6, 2009 - 5:32 PM BRIAN GOMEZ THE GAZETTE A USA Wrestling executive was fired Monday after he was accused by police of using the Internet to lure a child into having sex. Mark Anthony Scott, 49, the director of state services for the Colorado Springs-based national governing body, was arrested at the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office and booked into the Jefferson County jail in Golden. Scott was arrested on suspicion of attempted sexual exploitation of a child, attempted Internet sexual exploitation of a child and Internet luring of a child. He's being held without bond before his initial appearance today in court. According to a press release from prosecutors, Scott began a "sexually graphic chat" with an undercover investigator posing as an underage teenager June 6, and the conversation continued for weeks as Scott described "the sexual things he wanted to do to her." USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender said Tony Black, manager of grassroots development, will replace Scott on an interim basis. Bender called Scott's arrest "an isolated incident." In a statement, the NGB said it was "shocked and disturbed about this situation. USA Wrestling has zero tolerance for this type of conduct. The organization will fully cooperate with the appropriate authorities."
  12. ghouse- Thanks. That's all it was. Plain and simple. Glad you recognized me. Wrestlersdad- Good luck to your son. But what's with all the anger? Last time I logged in, this was still the 'Wrestling Mat' forum. I simply passed along a link/article that I found newsworthy and (somewhat) informative for those of us in the wrestling realm --- regardless of how 'premature' or 'attention getting' you perceive it to be. No harm was intended and no attack was made nor judgment of guilt lain --- although USAWrestling has already taken action, without waiting for a court decision. It was simply an article post. I don't come here to discuss religion, politics, or celebrity gossip. I've been posting here longer than a lot of the Tennessee Jeds who post here today. (And I use 'Tennessee Jeds' in an affectionate manner. I know full well that we're all 'Alabama Hicks' down here. /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ) I've been posting under the same name, 8+ years here (yes, even before the improvements locked everyone in to a visible profile created date) and 10 years elsewhere. I just found it to be of interest and decided to pass it along. I did the same for the Georgia forum. I don't just support AL wrestling. I'm very much in favor of the sport throughout the Southeast and try to stay 'in the loop'. I pass things along and appreciate the same. If you perceived my post as anything other than as stated, then there was a gross misunderstanding. Speaking of article and link postings, here's a link to the 'official' word from USAWrestling: http://www.usawrestling.org/section.php?se...ArticleID=20545 USA Wrestling statement about Mark Scott USA Wrestling 07/06/2009 USA WRESTLING STATEMENT July 6, 2009 On Monday, July 6, USA Wrestling was notified by the Jefferson County District Attorney??™s office that one of its employees, Mark A. Scott, had been arrested on suspicion of attempting to lure a child for sexual purposes over the internet and was in custody. Mr. Scott, who is employed as the Director of State Services, has been relieved of all duties with USA Wrestling. All state service matters should be referred to the Manager of State Services. USA Wrestling was shocked and disturbed about this situation. USA Wrestling has zero tolerance for this type of conduct. The organization will fully cooperate with the appropriate authorities. USA Wrestling will monitor the criminal proceedings and take appropriate action as necessary. USA Wrestling has no further comment on this matter at this time. *Source: www.TheMat.com, the Official website and net-presence of USAWrestling

  14. If you are a wrestling coach who can also asst. coach football (not to be confused with an asst. football coach who can also coach wrestling).....you're as good as 'in'. Scottsboro City Schools openings can be found here. Follow up...... *See article: http://www.thedailysentinel.com/story.lass...b954dbc844a1ac7 Supplement debate leads to resignation By Jason Bowen The Daily Sentinel Published June 18, 2009 A coaching supplement debate led to the resignation of Scottsboro wrestling coach Chris Staton, Scottsboro City Schools Superintendent Dr. Judy Berry said Wednesday. Staton submitted his resignation last week, ending his six-year tenure which included four Class 5A state championships. Berry said she and Scottsboro City Schools athletics director Larry Morris met with Staton a few weeks ago and Staton asked for a pay raise. "(Staton) didn't feel like he was adequately compensated," Berry said. ???Supplements for extracurricular and athletic activities are board approved and we do not deviate from that. He didn't feel like he was being paid enough money compared to other sports. We can't compare (the supplement) with other sports, you have to compare it with other school systems (supplements). He's decided he doesn't want to continue coaching wrestling for the amount he's paid." Berry said research showed that Staton was the highest paid Class 5A coach in Alabama and that only three Class 6A coaches received a higher supplement. "I wish we had unlimited money for all our academic and athletic programs,??? Berry said. ???(But) from January to May, we were cut $1.4 million because of proration. This was a terrible time to be asking for a raise." Staton declined to go into details Wednesday about the reason for his resignation but did issue a statement. "In April, I spoke with Scottsboro??™s athletic director, Larry Morris, about some concerns that I had about the wrestling program," Staton said in the statement. "At the end of the school year, I met with Dr. Berry and Larry Morris to further discuss my concerns. At this time, it became apparent that our differences were not going to be resolved. I understand their point of view, and I understand that they are trying to do what they feel is best for their situation. I also feel that they understand my point of view. Unfortunately, we couldn??™t arrive at an agreement." The task now is hiring a new head coach, a duty Berry said won't be easy due the timing of Staton's resignation. Berry said coaches were asked to submit a letter stating their intentions to keep or relinquish their coaching duties by March 31. "I don't feel like it was fair to the kids, me, the board or administrators, to give such a short window of time. That's the reason we had the (March 31) deadline. It's very late in the year to find a head coach. Our teachers??™ first day is Aug. 4," Berry said. "We hire teachers and assign coaching duties. We only have a few teaching openings available. We're going to do everything we can to get the word out that we need a wrestling coach and these are the teaching positions we have. We want the absolute best wrestling coach we can find. That's what the kids deserve." Staton said in the statement that he'll continue to support the program and is proud of what the wrestlers accomplished during his tenure, which saw Scottsboro win Class 5A state titles from 2006-2009 and had 18 wrestlers win individual state championships. "I have enjoyed coaching at Scottsboro and I have many great memories from my time here. I have made lifelong friends through the sport of wrestling. This program has been a part of my life since I wrestled here in high school and I will always be supportive of it. I will be supportive of the next coach, and I will continue to support these high school young men as they work toward their goal of making history and winning their fifth consecutive state championship," Staton said in the statement. "This program was in great shape, both financially and talent wise when I inherited it, and I feel that I am leaving the same situation for the next coach. I would like to thank the young men that have wrestled for me, as well as their parents, for supporting me and for believing in this program. I would also like to thank the community for the support that it has continued to show over the years. I have tried to run this program with class and pride, and it is my hope that it is something that has brought pride to the community. At the end of the day, I am still proud to be a Wildcat." Berry said she appreciates the job Staton did with the SHS wrestling program. "I appreciate the hard work and dedication he gave to the program and the role model he's been for the kids," Berry said. "I wish him the best of luck going forward." ?© 2009 The Daily Sentinel. All rights reserved. A Southern Newspapers publication.

Staton confirmed to The Daily Sentinel Monday morning that he has submitted his letter of resignation. He declined to comment further. Staton steps down after a highly-successful six-year tenure. Scottsboro has won the last four Class 5A state championships from 2006-09 and had 18 individual state champion wrestlers during that span. Earlier this month, local attorney Bill White went before the school board to ask it to reexamine its coaching supplement distribution because he said he heard Staton was considering resigning as coach. The wrestling head coach's supplement is $3,601.50 with an additional summer stipend of $1,000. "(Staton) has given up a lot of family time for the wrestling (program)," White told The Daily Sentinel in a June 3 story after he addressed the board. "I feel like he should be fairly compensated for the time he puts in and the success he's had." According to the board's coaching supplement list passed in 2006, the varsity football and varsity girls and boys basketball positions are the highest paid supplement/stipends, with all three positions paying $18,600 ($12,600 for the supplement and $6,000 for the stipend). Wrestling is on par with supplement pay for other sports such as track, cross country, baseball and softball. Baseball and softball receive higher summer stipends because those coaches are responsible for the upkeep of their sports' field. "We have a supplement pay schedule approved by the board," Scottsboro Superintendent of Education Dr. Judy Berry told the Daily Sentinel in a story June 3. "We have not deviated from it. Our research indicates that Chris is the highest paid wrestling coach in the state in Class 5A." ?© 2009 The Daily Sentinel. All rights reserved. A Southern Newspapers publication.
