  1. Stokomo's father died on Friday June 20th... Stokomo is one of the nicest posters on CoachT and a really good person, as well as being an important part of many of the 2000 plus basketball victories @ Dobyns-Bennett, AAU coach, & Volunteer Falcon assistant ... it is obvious his father, Stokomo Sr. did a good job...may he rest in peace. Stokomo, our thoughts and prayers are with you...God bless you. Roll Tribe Roll
  2. I am a very happy person. Roll Tribe Roll
  3. We'll be patient... Roll Tribe Roll
  4. I think when you make predictions regarding Region 1 - 5A and misspell Dobyns-Bennett you tend to lose some credibility... Roll Tribe Roll
  5. Yes I will...hope that is okay Roll Tribe Roll
  6. Okay, let me play a while here...first off, Tom wasn't relegated to anything...the only change from WKIN to WGOC is the call letters, which from a corporate thought playing Grand Old Country music, fits well with WGOC...the signal and call letters were bought from JT Parker...same 1320 frequency as WKIN and the same Watts of power...no relegation...his career has been always been business decisions, as careers are for most...this is another business decision, nothing emotional...South should be able to support a radio broadcast without any difficulty...the playoff game is another matter, but my guess is: being that D-B had been on AM1320 for 20 plus years that is where the playoff game(s) would be and another business decision was made to put the South game on a station that at the time didn't have a playoff game to broadcast...I remember when I was with WKPT-AM (many moons ago), we did a couple of playoff games of other schools, as well (before Holston Valley Broadcasting expanded into Tennessee High and Science Hill games)...It is business...sometimes there are those of us with emotional ties that get to do the broadcasting (and/or writing), but for the actual "voices", the stations - it is a business...and it is good business to showcase and highlight high school student athletes; as Coach Clark has said "where else can you go to see 500 young people attempting to be great on a Friday night." 2nd...Maryville functions in the true team concept, highlighting and potentially featuring their top talent, but not to the detriment of the entire team...I believe we do have some coaches who attempt to function that way in NET, but haven't been able to totally institute what they have in Maryville...The best in NET can and do compete with the best from Knoxville, but not yet with Maryville... This should be a good year for NET football with a lot of teams with a lot to prove...I look forward to watching. Roll Tribe Roll
  7. etfan, In the Blount game, two D-B touchdowns were called back on plays where the video clearly shows the officials made mistakes...those two scores would have given D-B a 21-0 advantage and Blount would not have been in the game...and with the ball at the 4, first and goal...well...I didn't see that team underachieve against anyone... South will beat the Hill and Blount has lot a lot from the past two years, including their coach (for this year)... Good luck, hope everyone stays healthy. Roll Tribe Roll
  8. It was Robert St. Clair...he went to Ross N. Robinson and lived on Watauga Street behind Kabool's Grocery... and I didn't have to look it up...but I did look up to him; he could play...I am a bit older than DBTeepee, though, I think...and yet younger than Coach St. Clair... Roll Tribe Roll

  10. Hello 83SouthRebel, if you will go to TriCitiesSports.com and click on the story about the D-B vs. Unicoi County baseball game there is a photo gallery which includes pictures of the entire facility (to the left field outfield fence)...but to answer your question, the entire field is FieldTurf...the "infield" part of the facility is simply clay colored FieldTurf...the only real dirt on any playing surface in the stadium is the pitchers mound, everything else is Field Turf...it is really something very special...hope to see you there. 11. The D-B Athletic Director did not have a role in ending the series. Roll Tribe Roll
  12. Adrian does not play football...he is a senior...he is student council president at D-B...his mother was a record setting sprinter at D-B... Roll Tribe Roll
  13. Most high school game "contracts" are two year situations...set up for the home and home situation... Roll Tribe Roll
  14. D-B's actual statistical averages are not to the level previously stated...do appreciate the excitement and enthusiasm though...Sylvester is the only player averaging in double figures...add Reed King and Tremell McGue to the ten man rotation, with Adam Lytle getting some solid situational time... Roll Tribe Roll
  15. "Briefcase" is no longer at Antioch...he left for the sunny skys of Florida (I think)...He was never at King...He coached @ Draughan's Jr. College in Kingsport and then at Bristol College in Bristol...and in Savannah, Arizona (at least a couple of places), and a couple more in Tennessee (Morristown)...he won a national championship on the college level and I think a state championship at an indian reservation school in Arizona...also coached some high school baseball along the way...coached Antioch into the Championship game of last year's Arby's Classic (which they lost to the team from Miami)... 16. DCHS, very good post...but, I think Coach Morgan won the award outright last year and definately should have in '03-'04... And I think Barnwell or France would have been outstanding choices on the girls side of things...but maybe Bright got it for doing what was expected, which many times is the most difficult aspect of a season...but, then wait a minute, that logic should then give CMO the award for winning the conference with undefeated on top of it...so...???...who knows...again, it has been a fun year for high school basketball... Roll Tribe Roll
  17. maroonandrey, I certainly wasn't trying to humble or even diminish your opinion...I used to get all riled up over these things, but have previously seen two glaring omissions that made me just realize the players have to know what they did on the court (or the field) and their teammates and opponents are also aware and that should be what they judge their effort by...I remember the 1988 Arby's Classic won by Coach Van Huss' Indians and Hunter Halliburton was left off the all-tournament team after having a dominating defensive and very effective offensive tournament...Coach Van Huss was livid and I had never heard him say a word before or after about such things...many people who saw the tournament thought he could and should be MVP...but the people who selected the team left him off...didn't bother him he completed a great season and helped Coach Van Huss make it to the state tournament for the last time...Hunter knows how he performed... I don't disagree with your thoughts, they are yours and you are welcome to your opinions as are those who select the all-stars...I thought CMO did an outstanding job this year and last...as did Coach Dyer this year and Coach Witcher last year...but I wasn't asked...ha,ha...and we are all probably better off for it... we have gotten into too much of the individual awards being equal to or of greater importance than the team awards...and as Coach Van Huss used to say, "if you are more worried about seeing your name in the paper than helping the team be better, then there are plenty of individual things that you can participate in at D-B...but basketball is a team game and it is about the collective group of players playing together for one goal"...guarantee Stokomo and many others have heard that, or something very close to that many times... And CMO is certainly not a polarizing personality, but as is said "We are D-B" and that is not always well received...how many other schools in the conference have all their opponents have a specific cheerleader led cheer about them?...whether it is "put 'em in the teepee scalp um" or "burn um"...it is there because of respect and that has to be handled properly, as well...but I am getting off my soapbox and saying again congratulations to all the players and coaches and parents for sharing their children...high school sports are important, but not because of awards... Thanks for the kind words...it is really fun to be back on the air and yes, I will be courtside from Murfreesboro... Rool Tribe Roll
  18. The media had nothing to do with the All-Conference team as presented at the Big 9 Banquet...the Johnson City Press has come out with it's All-NET team, the Times-News will have one (probably), as will the Herald Courier, and TriCitiesSports.com - those are and/or will be picked by the media outlet reporting it... these post season accolades will never satisfy everyone and should be looked upon as another topic of conversation...hey, we can't even get the TV stations to accurately report on the outcome of games, why would we trust the "media" to pick an all-star team?...(WCYB reported that Science Hill beat D-B in the District championship, 50-47, "ending D-B's dominance of the Big 9 conference" - that was actually the score of the girl's game from the night before..and for those who don't know, the D-B boys won the district championship...WJHL reported that D-B beat Bearden 61-54, when the final was actually 70-65)...and the coaches want to try to make sure each school is somehow represented...we all make mistakes, oversights, underestimations, and omissions...and we go on...I mean, hey, Candace Parker didn't get SEC Player oif the Year...???... congratulations to everyone who played high school basketball this season in the Big 9, boys and girls, I truly hope it was an experience that will provide lifelong memories and life lessons... Roll Tribe Roll
  19. Dobyns-Bennett is very proud to have earned the opportunity, along with our friends from Oak Ridge, to represent East Tennessee in the state tournament. Congratulations, good luck, and much continued success to the Indians and the Wildcats. Roll Tribe Roll
  20. really good post rolltriberoll...one thing you have to remember is that Oak Ridge's PG is Jared Stephens, their outstanding RB and all-around athlete... D-B has not played real well against good zones, but has been able to win games against a zone (only 3 losses on the year)...it will come down to rebounding and second chance opportunities for both teams...thinnking that if either team gets an advantage in the paint, they win...duh, that was a tough call, huh?... Roll Tribe Roll
  21. WaCo, They did, that was in 72-73, but they were second in the Big 9 (as well as second in the state) and there have been many other trips to the state tournament during this period of time, but these are the only regular season, district tournament, and regional tournament champs...the others have lost the district or regional or not won the conference and still made it to the state... Roll Tribe Roll
  22. D-B has had six(6) seasons with a regular season, district, & regional championship since Coach Van Huss came to Dobyns-Bennett: year record final game coach 69-70 32-6 state semis Coach Van Huss 71-72 38-3 3rd place/state Coach Van Huss 74-75 34-3 state semis Coach Van Huss 80-81 36-1 state quarters Coach Van Huss 92-93 35-2 state quarters Coach Shipley 07-08 29-3 ??????? Coach Morgan 92-93 also won the Arby's championship. This is Coach Morgan's 5th trip to the substate/sectionals in his eight years at D-B...beat Farragut in 02-03; beat Bearden in 03-04; lost to Bearden in 05-06; lost to Powell in 06-07...both the wins were played in the Buck Van Huss Dome and both the losses were played on the road...Marshall Hardy's uncle, Mark Elliott, was the starting point guard for the 74-75 team, it was Marko's junior year... Roll Tribe Roll
  23. maroonandgrey, D-B did play Science Hill five (5) times in '92-93...but D-B only won four (4) of those games...lost the first one at home and then won the next four on the way to an Arby's championship, regular season championship, district tournament championship, and regional tournament championship (won that one by 30+ @ Freedom Hall)...lost to Memphis Fairley (an undefeated team) in the quarterfinals of the state...talked with Coach Shipley today and he remembered that we had gone 3-1 against Science Hill in '91-92; losing in the regional finals...we lost to Brainerd in the state semis after JaMichael had broken his arm... This years D-B team is the first to win the regular season title, district tournament title, and regional tournament title in the same year since Shipley's '92-93 team... Roll Tribe Roll
  24. last night the two Big 9 teams were better than the two IMAC teams (4-2 regional tournament record)...Sylvester wouldn't have been "shut down" last year...Throp and Sensabaugh were not overrated...and as Cap1 said, Greeneville had the best player, not the best team, both last year and last night...nor did they have the best coach... Greeneville played hard last night, Gash was very solid...good game plan, I thought they left it a bit too soon; part of that was due to D-B deciding to take it inside and the 2nd quarter Riggs had...but a very respectable performance...a good game. The "Hill" looked outstanding...but Cocke County didn't look very good, obviously part of that was due to the Toppers... The IMAC has both the girls teams in the regional finals...and the Big 9 has both the boys teams in the regional finals...same two as last year...and they will get either Oak Ridge or Bearden on Monday... Roll Tribe Roll
  25. who was Ottinger going to stop?...D-B's leading scorer only had one point in last year's game, and to use your phrase "without question" if he scores half his tournament average D-B wins by 16...but, what happens in the game decides who was better (ask the Patriots)...Gash had 26 in the regional quarterfinal last year...D-B did make it to the state the year they beat Malone...and the next year, too...No, Science Hill would not want Duncan...there are no 3000 student schools in TN and D-B has 1810...Greeneville has a good team and a great tradition...I played against Tank Black, the Blue brothers, Danny Jagles (sp?), and more recently Marty Story was outstanding to watch...so somehow G-Ville has been able to find players...no arrogance, the Big 9 is a deeper league than the IMAC...and D-B has been to the state twice 03 & 04 and to the substate the past two years, don't know how many trips G-Ville has made...I see the two regular season conference champs playing one another, just like last year (D-B was co-champs last year)... and yes, D-B has the better record and played a tougher schedule..but the game is on Greeneville's home floor...I think D-B should win, as evidently you do, too...but when two champs play not sure there can be an upset...two feet from out of bounds, what angle did you have?... Good luck tonight. Roll Tribe Roll
