  1. A little more on Ryan Jenkins from Mount Juliet. He is a 3 year starter and was the District 9AAA Special Teams Player of the Year as a sophomore. He has scored 222 points in his career and is an astounding 23/27 on fgs (85%), 2/2 from 50+ (long of 53), has 43 touchbacks on kickoffs this year alone, has hit 153 extra points in his career, and has averaged over 40 yards as a punter with a long of 58. His fg breakdown by year (11/11 as a sophomore, 7/10 last year, and 5/6 so far this year). He has made over 90% of his fg's from 40+ yards, and is being looked at by several D1 schools. In addition, Ryan is a top 10% student in a graduating class of almost 500 and has scored a 28 on the ACT. Thanks for the consideration.
  2. We would like to add two names for consideration at Mount Juliet: Brett Dillard (OT) and Keenan Harris (DL). Dillard is a 3 yr starter @ left tackle that consistently grades in the 90s every week for the top scoring offense in 6A. Dillard is being recruited at the 1a level, but most important is that he has a tremendous GPA and ACT score is equally impressive. A great kid with a huge heart (also named Character Player of the week for the Bears). Harris is a stat stuffer...he is on pace for over 20 tfls from the DL position...he has played every spot on our DL, and has played big in big games. Keenan is also be recruited at the D1 level and is a leader for a defense that is top 5 in scoring defense. Thanks for the consideration.
  3. Congrats to these two young men, and hopefully this class will have more to join in the near future. Congratulations to all signees (this has been a surprising year for TN Football!)
  4. As just heard on 104.5, Antwaun Majors won the Nick Coutras Award that receives a $5,000 scholarship to the school of his choice. I am very proud and excited about the news, and want the committee as well as the general reader to know that this individual is what should embody high school athletics, from his work ethic, to his unselfishness, to his balance between three sports and the classroom (and that they made a great pick). It is also awesome to hear about the other finalists stories, and I know that these young men are going to be successful in their very near futures, on and off the field. This is an outstanding award given by what I have heard to be a great ambassador for the sport during his time (and obviously now through this award), Mr. Nick Coutras. Congrats to all finalists, and to Antwaun.
  5. Week 1: Gallatin Week 3: Cookeville Week 5: Mount Juliet
  6. Late May scrimmage at MJHS...probably Friday night (Date and Time TBA).
  7. Thanks, it was an honor to represent a region that had two state champions (97/2000), eight consecutive semifinalists, and great support from small town communities...thank you for your continued support for high school football in its purest form.
  8. Thanks, the Portland Community is proud of the his accomplishments on the field, but was changed from the inside-out by his accomplishments off the field...he embodied a the definition of selfless...something I struggle with that he made look natural (because it was).
  9. The Sumner County rushing record belongs to one Gerald Turner from Portland...who, as soon as the proper records get passed on to TSSAA (oversight), will be in the top five in three different categories all time (statewide)...rushing yards, total yards (all-purpose) and total touchdowns. Without his records in front of me I can tell you he scored 96 touchdowns, had well over 5,000 all purpose yards (vast majority of those rushing) and hit the 1500 yards mark three times (sophmore, junior, senior). The most astounding stat, he averaged right at 10 yards per rush...he was something special...and is greatly missed.
  10. Portland High School offers a camp on the first week of June for all incoming seventh graders to incoming ninth graders. The emphasis is to teach the fundamentals of football (the very basics {blocking/tackling}) as well as implementing the basics of both the wing-t offense, and our defense. The best part about the camp is the cost...nothing. It's free, and several area sports reps provide door prizes as well as a t-shirt for every player with perfect attendance. This is not only for Portland players, but also from the surrounding areas, or anywhere for that matter. This is a great opportunity for your son!
  11. Dublin High School in Dublin, GA (about 2 hours south of Atlanta) is looking for an assistant football, assistant basketball coach. Possible openings for teaching are Physical Education and Alternative school. Anyone interested should contact Roger Holmes (former head coach at Beech High School) at 478-277-9808 or send an email to rholmes140@aol.com Minorities are encouraged to apply.
