Just like Tennessee having 3 state champions per weight classification is ridiculous.  It's nothing more than a way to make more people feel good about themselves.  Blame the YMCA, because they are the ones that began the trend of passing out participation trophies.  Back in the day youth had to win a championship to receive a trophy.

If California can do it........I think we could all probably do it.....

  2. Yea.....1A here used to be a 8 man the bracket.  I helped run the state tournament for more than 10 years here.....then work got in the way. Hope to do again when I retire.

The goal for regionals and sectionals was to get to 16 man brackets for everyone, shorten the number of the days for the State tournament, and thus reduce the cost of the venue rental.  It's been a while for me, but I think when there were 5 classifications 5A had 76 schools....but every time I turn around now there's a new school.  I honestly don't know if they're going back to 5 or 6.

I loved it when we had the tournament at the Gwinnett Arena, but could never get them to open the Jack Daniels concession stand.

Of note.....the prior GHSA official that was always at and over the state tournament was Gary Phillips.  Gary was a HUGE wrestling fan.  He was also Herschel Walker's high school football coach.  He wrote every person that worked the state tournament a nice thank you letter.

It is true, they had to forfeit McCallie tournament final to Villers but wrestled an exhibition instead and Villers beat the Georgia pretty badly.

Yes......that's what the guy said....pinned quick....

I just didn't know that was rule...

Seems like if they're legal at the location they're wresting it should be ok.

  4. If anyone is interested the Georgia Sectional results are available on Track Wrestling.  Just search for GHSA in events.

Things I heard or learned from yesterday:

    • GHSA is doing away with the 7A classification next year...guess they'll have 1A - 6A
    • Only 6 qualifiers from each sectional go to state - 1 and 2 seeds get a bye at state (used to be 8 qualified)
    • Buford and Camden County got all 14 to state
    • Buford might be interested in Cleveland Duals or Father Ryan Tournament next year.  Evidently 2 of the December tournaments they go to are on same weekend next year.
    • Last odd thing I heard from a parent........if a Georgia kids wrestles a Tennessee 8th grader they are DQ'd by GHSA for the remainder of the year.  The dad said they had to forfeit a weight class to McCallie this year.  I'm wondering if this is really true.

These are not $s paid to these kids--it is a projected annual valuation from ON3.  I promise you, the kids are not seeing this type of money in high school.  I know a few of them - and they are not getting the ON3 valuation dollars while they are in high school.

The ON3 Valuation is a projection of annual value based on the kid's

    + Performance
    + Influence
    + Exposure
    + Deal Data

Deal Data is only one of four-- and it is the least important.

In colleges, about 85% (average estimate) of the NIL money actually paid is coming from collectives--not actual endorsements.  When collectives come to high schools, that is when you should begin to get concerned.

So.....let's take Nico Iamaleva for example.......he received $375,000 before he graduated high school.....to come to UT....going from High School to College.

If this plays out........what stops it happening for kids going from Middle School to High School? I mean...it's legal now.

*And I think the column before "On3 NIL Valuation" is money they've received. (I could be wrong)

  6. Ok.....so you don't think it'll be like the college NIL deals?  You know like Nico's NIL he get $8 million.

Maybe go to Tulsa Nationals.......offer the 1st place kids NIL deals to come your school?

I hope it doesn't come to that.....

Their football team got bounced early this year if I am not mistaken. So that is a moot point. Cleveland made the playoffs last couple of years too and we have the same challenges as several of our better kids (including Lucas) play football.

Umm.......I wouldn't go there.....comparing their football teams......Buford had more 5 star players than the entire state of Tennessee....wouldn't go there with any other sport against Buford....feel free to check.

Exactly my point. Guess what, our December is full too. We had Cleveland Duals, Carnahan, Knockout, and Powerade. We are not scared to wrestle them, and they are certainly not scared to wrestle us either, so arguing over it is dumb. I posted a hypothetical matchup. Talk about that instead.

Not really arguing.....I'd just like to see it.

The point freco was making is in direct response to the comments about us not leaving Cleveland to wrestle good teams, which if you read his post, is false. For sure we could travel to Clarksville and wrestle local Nashville teams and maybe a few Kentucky teams but instead they have traveled to Camden last year and lake Norman in 2022. Not that no one else hosts tournaments but that Buford or Baylor or Camden don’t travel to ours and we have traveled to tournaments where the are.

I could only find Cleveland's 2020/2021 schedule on their site.  But looking at when the Cleveland Duals were then.....the Buford Invitational looks to be the same weekend.  Like I've said before...scheduling is hard.  For Buford.....December looks pretty full....their tournament, then Missouri, Florida, and Ohio.

That is all they had. The others were not worth bringing. Like I said, they are a much better traditional team than a dual team.

I find that kind of funny......since Buford won the 9th grade and JV county wrestling tournaments. Now I'll grant that because Buford goes deep in the state playoffs for football some kids may have not been in the room yet.

All their teams go deep into the playoffs in pretty much every sport. Not uncommon for most of their teams to be nationally ranked....and yes they're a city school.

They're currently building a really nice $60 million football stadium to go along with their fairly new $21 million arena that's not too bad either.  It was always nice not to have to share practice fields/facilities for football, soccer, or lacrosse since they have 9 artificial surface fields for the schools......even a dedicated stadium for lacrosse and soccer.  Yea....they have bunch of green wrestling mats too.

That my friend was a mic drop post.

Not really a mic drop......Jefferson is a 3A team and Woodland a 5A team from Georgia a state with 7 classification levels for sports. Both considered a small schools.

If you want to see what go anywhere and wrestle anyone looks like....go take a peek at this schedule and the results:
    http://www.collinshillwrestling.com/events.aspx?sid=459&team=v

Yea...I know it's old.....but that's what take on anyone looks like. Dang even the Cleveland Duals are in there....

Odd......they tied Camden County in the state duals....31 - 31....lost on 9th tiebreaker.

My point is really I'd like to see the match......I would love to see Cleveland and Baylor....maybe McCallie after what I saw last week.....wrestle Buford and Camden County.  I don't care who wins.....I like wrestling and would like to see.

My ties graduated from Buford in 2019......and my other 2 from Collins Hill.....in 2007 and 2010.

I don't have a dog in this fight.....just want to see it.

Actually I'd like to see Buford have all their teams play Tennessee's best teams......

This is a stupid statement. When Jefferson was on their run of 18 straight state titles we wrestled them at Smokey Mountain duals and destroyed them. When Woodland was ranked in the Top 15 in the country, they came to the Cleveland duals and we smoked them too. We tried to get Camden to wrestle us. Go ahead and find a dual for them outside of GA. We went to KO and beat Buford (they are a much better traditional than a dual team). We have wrestled Wyoming Seminary. We are not scared. Lol. You know who trash talks teams with long win streaks? Teams incapable of them.

At KO......Buford brought 9...just pointing that out.

At the Kansas City Stampede.....Buford had 10 and finished 2nd.......Baylor 3rd....but they only had 11.

I had a lot of love and respect for Coach Ramos.  Great coach, better man.

Many people don't know this about him.....but it's just how he was.....you may enjoy this read too after the article below:
    https://www.amazon.com/Backroads-Plan-Good-Deeds-Pee-ebook/dp/B078YDPQ6X?ref_=ast_author_dp

Here's an old article about his and his adventures:

Cliff Ramos has made his “Travels with Pee Wee” road trip adventure into an annual event, one that has now spanned eight years after he and good friend Steve West returned home this weekend. The premise is a simple one — to travel the country with no itinerary and no time constraints, to get off the beaten path and enjoy all the small wonders of the world that you normally pass while speeding down the interstate.

The former Collins Hill High and Greater Atlanta Christian wrestling coach always enjoys the trips, and keeps a journal (and a blog) of the places he visits and the interesting people he meets. He said this year’s trip was particularly poignant because it occurred during such troubling times in our country.

He and West drove through Baton Rouge the day before Alton Sterling was shot and killed in by police. The two were in Oklahoma, just hours from Dallas, when the tragedy unfolded there, with five police officers being killed. Ramos said the trip’s first stop was in Selma, Ala. — home of the famous civil rights marches — and ended near his home in Monroe, when he and West saw a car pulled to the side of the road with its blinkers flashing.

One of the important parts of the yearly trip is to try and do good deeds, Ramos said. So when he and West (known as “Pee Wee”) saw the stranded car, it was an easy decision to pull over and help. The trip’s ending put things in perspective for him, he said.

“We were tired, but we pulled over and a young black lady, about 20, had run out of gas,” Ramos said. “I drove Steve on to his house, and he gave me a gas can with a couple of gallons of gas in it and I drove back. She was very happy. You look at that and think: It’s pretty darn easy to get along.”

Fittingly, the eighth incarnation of “Travels with Pee Wee” took Ramos and West — also a former Gwinnett teacher and wrestling coach — to eight states. The treks have taken Ramos to 43 of the contigious 48 states, with Oregon, Washington, Nevada and North Dakota missing along with Rhode Island. Ramos said he and West drive about six hours per day, and try to do good deeds along the way.

Ramos chronicles those good deeds on his blog (http://good-deed-doers.blogspot.com) and asks friends and others to make contributions to the Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry for each good deed. In the eight years Ramos has been taking the trips, nearly $10,000 has been raised for the co-op.

Despite long hours on the road, Ramos and West try to make three or four stops per day. One of those came near Amarillo, Texas at a place called Cadillac Ranch, which features a bunch of Cadillacs buried nose down with their tails sticking out of the ground.

Another interesting visit occurred in Clovis, N.M., where the two visited the Norman Petty Recording Studio, where Buddy Holly recorded “Peggy Sue.” For their good deed that day, Ramos and West helped move a piano, heavy speakers and other equipment.

But Ramos said his favorite stop was in Pecos, Texas — home to the first-ever rodeo. He said small towns such as that one are what the trip is all about.

“That’s the best part of the trip — getting off the highways, getting into small towns and doing little things and meeting people,” the recent inductee into the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame said. “(Pecos) was just a different world than what we live in. I love going to places where you feel like ‘I’m gone.’

“It felt like we were on a different planet. And I like that.”

  16. When my oldest brother wrestled at Hixson and they got a new coach.....Gordon Connell.   They were going out for a conditioning run.  My brother though it would funny to jump in the ditch and hide in a culvert until the team was coming back.  He didn't think anyone would notice as he blended back in on the return.

Coach Connell made him wrestle every person on the team.......and then the coach.

  17. Ok......with all the team bashing that been going on I thought I'd try to bring some humor to CoachT.

Wrestler's and coaches are funny......so I thought I'd a couple of stories and hope some of you would have some to also share.

    Story #1:
We used to travel up to the Cleveland Duals on the Friday before the duals, and even started squeezing in a match with Baylor the night before a few times.

I was typically a chaperone and would be put in a room with 4 wrestlers. One trip Coach Ramos said I have a special assignment for you, and put me in a room with 4 of the studs.  I generally slept in the floor and by the door in my sleeping bag.

The next day I overheard one of the studs talking to Coach Ramos and telling him he didn't want me in the room anymore.  Coach Ramos asked if there was a problem; the kid replied that I snored and he couldn't get out the door. Cliff asked why he needed to get out the door and the kid replied "well we were supposed to meet up with the wrestlerettes for Bible study."  Cliff said "After curfew!!.....That's exactly why he was in your room....now go try not to get beat."

    Story #2:
I was at the high school one day in wrestling office and chatting with Coach Ramos.  He said hold on, I gotta make a call.

He picks up the phone and as he's asking the person what they're doing and as they respond he turns white as a ghost and says hang up I'll call you back.

I asked him if everything was ok.  He said "I hope so."  I think I said "What??"  The he said "That was Kyle.....Kyle Maynard and I asked him what he was doing and he said he was driving"

Now if you don't know who Kyle Maynard is he was wrestler that was a quadruple congenital amputee. He didn't have full arms or legs.  He did have stumps for arms and he had to use both to hold a phone.  This was before Bluetooth or phones integrated with the car.  So you can get the mental image of what Coach Ramos was imagining.

Coach looked at me and said....."I hope I didn't just kill Kyle"

    Story #3:

Coach Ramos asked me to get the middle schoolers used to traveling and put a team together and take to them to an away tournament. So I get a pretty good group of kids together for a tournament in Pigeon Forge. Actually a really good group....9 kids would go on to be future state placers and 4 of those wrestled in college.....2 played football in college.

As we walk in a local man stops me and asks me who are these rednecks from Georgia.  Mind you this guy was wearing overalls, Carhartt shirt with cutoff sleeves, muddy boots, and a straw hat......

On this same trip....we got snowed in and had to check back into the Econo Lodge there in Pigeon Forge. Later that evening when I'm thinking I'll never do this again; the front desk calls.  The nice woman asks if I still have 14 wrestlers with me.  I said yes and I think they're in their rooms.  She says no they're naked in the indoor pool and that's ok since we're the only ones in the hotel, but could they please get the pool furniture out of the pool.....

    Alright....lets hear your funnies...

I figured that would be the response.  But they still seem less scared than what is being portrayed on here by Bump11.  They do bring in duals teams from other states for their tournament, but why would we consider that?  It seems to me that other Tennessee teams would want a shot at wrestling against Cleveland and getting better.

I get it.....scheduling is tough and usually takes a few years.  I've been here since 1996 and only seen Camden County at traditional state. The way things go down here, teams don't seem to string decades of greatness.  So you could schedule and they not be good anymore.
