  1. All this talk about Willie is great and everything ... But my question is : Why did Bolivar not work to get Chism the ball every possession? Correct me if I'm wrong ... but when Chism got the ball down there, DL had a really hard time stopping him - as they should a 6'9" 240 pound man. Did Bolivar's coach not see that Chism was scoring fairly easily when they got him the ball down low? I mean honestly, if DL had someone like Chism they would have worked the post like crazy all night. Was DL's post defense (which is very good I might add) too much for Chism? Yes, he had 21 points which is impressive, but those at the game ... don't you all agree that he would have had much more had they gotten him the ball a lot more? Also ... it didn't help that he would float to the top of the key at times - but that's when the coach steps in and tells him what he needs to be doing. Any thoughts?
  2. A few things. 1. DL played a great game , as did Bolivar. 2. DL's defense really shut down Bolivar. Say all you want, but I didn't except Bolivar to go into stall mode with 4 1/2 minutes to go in the 4th. It was smart, but wasn't excepting them. I guess they figured out that they couldn't do much against DL's defense. (Chism did have his fair share of points in the paint though, but not as much as I thought he'd have). 3. The reason I am convinced that Bolivar really stayed in this game was their hard pressure defense that got the the Mustangs at the end. DL kind of got away from the "slow down" game towards the end, and Bolivar took back the lead and kept it within 1 or 2 until there was less than a minute to go and DL had to foul. 4. The refs didn't call much and let the guys play physical. Which helped both teams a lot, but ended up helping Bolivar in the end. Josh Slater had to go out of the game at least twice that I saw because he was bleeding (nose and elbow). 5. DL exceeded most expectations from CoachT posters. Great game. Great season. GO MUSTANGS
  3. Ok here ya go. I only know their numbers, and a few names. #12 - short PG, quick, can penetrate #10 - Zach Woods - shooter #22 - can drive sometimes (?) #42 - stocky post player #20 - solid PG/forward #14 - Todd Zimmerman - I've seen this kid score 15+ points one night and a few nights later he scores a few points . Who knows . That's all I can remember. They are a team of runs. If you let them get going, you'll be surprised at how quick the score can turn over in their favor. They can't play hard and solid the whole game, they have their moments where they are really good, and other times it's like "what is going on?". So basically, if Liberty just keeps them from getting hot, they should have no problem whatsoever. They aren't a good-shooting team except for Woods. I don't know if Liberty has any big guys, but Hume-Fogg doesn't really have any size either. The way the compensate for that is throwing out multiple defensive looks at you. Against DL in the Region Championship they probably played 5 or 6 (maybe more) different defenses including 1-3-1, 1-3-1 trap, man, 2-3 zone, full court press/trap ... so on so forth. I think Liberty beats them soundly. But who knows, if Hume-Fogg gets hot, it's tough to stop them.
  4. I have a really hard time believing Goodpasture will make it as far as everyone is picking them. From what I've seen this year, all they have is CJ Davis. They have size, but they didn't really seem to be able to use it against David Lipscomb (and it's not like DL has Brock and Mayes down low again this year ...). If Brainerd (or whoever it is GP plays) can stop Davis from shooting his 15-footers from the baseline, they should win. And I'm not just saying that because I go to DL ... And hopefully no one will be surprised if DL knocks off Bolivar tomorrow night ... GO MUSTANGS
  5. Lipscomb is off Granny White .. and you'll be less than 5 minutes from any type of food you want in Green Hills (from Wendy's to the Cheesecake Factory). Everyone better get there fairly early, one thing Lipscomb Univ. does lack is parking space since it's a fairly small campus (they have a parking garage but that will be full w/ LU students ... so you kind of have to be creative at times with your parking spots. Although I'm sure all of the high school parking will be taken up as well - just like those BA kids that came over and stole our Senior Parking Spots the other day ...
  6. Yes, I am pretty sure that they have moved it to Allen Arena - which is not cool. DL would feel much more comfortable on their home court, but since TSSAA has to step in and screw things up (more tickets - more money ...), there goes some of DL's advantage. However, I am sure DL will be spending as much time on the floor in Allen Arena as they are able to between now and Monday night. Hopefully they will get used to it by then... GO MUSTANGS
  7. The thing about MLK is that they can play both types. If they are playing a team like Bolivar who likes to run and gun - they'll slow it down. If they are playing a team like DL - they will speed it up and run and gun. DL controlled the pace of the game against MLK Wednesday night until the very end when MLK sped it up big time. DL can win this game, they just have to play their style of basketball and not let Bolivar play their style .. easier said than done of course. It's going to be packed though and hopefully DL will have a good student section to back up the guys. GO MUSTANGS
  8. David Lipscomb won 5AA.
  9. David Lipscomb 55 Hume Fogg 44 Both teams came out pretty sloppy in the 1st half - DL more so. DL was down 20-17 at the half and came out and play a whole lot better the 3rd quarter scoring nearly 20 points (or more). DL should have run away with this one, and they were at the end getting up by 15 or so, but a few turnovers got them rattled (Hume Fogg started pressuring hard), and they let HF back in the game. However, some free throws down the stretch by Slater, Hunt, and Clayton sealed it for them. Senior Trent Wilson really stepped it up this tournament from the offensive and defensive side. Senior Rob Mallernee, who has had an ankle injury that's kept him from playing really at all since the 2nd round of the district tourney, came in late in the game and provided on court leadership that calmed the team down a bit, plus he had some crucial defensive stops ... messed up ankle and all. All-Tournament Team from DL : Brad Hunt (junior) and Caleb Clayton (sophomore). Tournament MVP - Josh Slater Heck of a coaching job by Pickens this region tournament. For those that were at the games and for those that know him, that's enough said. The DL guys really surprised a lot people by getting this far, and I know that Coach Pickens is a major reason for that. Good luck to the Mustangs against Bolivar on Monday night @ home. GO MUSTANGS
  10. Pretty sure David Lipscomb embarassed Page last night 68-38. DL's coach put the freshmen in w/ almost 4 minutes to go - something he usually waits to do until the very end (he's wising up a little eh). I was a little scared in the 1st when Page came out firing from 3 - knocking down what seemed like everything. Then, DL finally started applying hard pressure and it was all downhill for Page. And I'm not so sure that David Lipscomb beating Ezell was an "upset". Remember that they split earlier in the season (DL beating them soundly by about 20 at home and the Ezell pulling away at the end at their place). Granted, Ezell is a very good team - as is FRA. FRA has the talent, but from what I've seen, they don't really decide to use it until they are down by 10 or so in the 4th quarter (that's what they've done to DL this year). GO LADY MUSTANGS ... DL ... not Loretto
  11. Don't know much about Spring Hill, but I hear they are a lot like MLK - just not as good and as well coached. After the #1 seed Giles County got "upset" last night by #4 seed Hume Fogg, how do you think the #2 seeded Spring Hill team will do against #3 DL? I'm pretty sure Rob Mallernee will be suiting up to play tonight after injuring his ankle in the Pearl Cohn game last week. Any predictions?
  12. Yea he did shoot a lot ... although I guess I have to give him credit cause he made a lot too ... Money from the left corner in the 2nd half. I kept thinking maybe he'll start missing from there but didn't really ... I didn't really bust out the 3 until late in the game when it counted most. Really surprised when he drained the 3 from like 3 or 4 feet behind the arc at the top of the key to send it into OT or another OT , don't remember - one too many. Although I do wish CJ would play a little defense. Don't really think he ever really denied his man until the late overtimes. His man got the ball easily every time other than that ... luckily he's quick enough to not let them drive, but if he'd play D in the first place he wouldn't have to worry about that. As a slightly biased DL fan ... appeared to me that he thought he was too good to play D, so he walked around and then kinda jumped to the ball when his man got it. But that's just an opinion. I think everyone (whether you're crazy about GP or not) would agree that he needs to work on trying harder on D, but the kid definitely has the jump shot and drive down ... kinda wondered how he got through some of DLs guys last night. When it comes down to it ... Lipscomb was up by 4 w/ 1:19 to go and made some mistakes and kinda gave the game away. They know that though and they'll learn from it. Unbelievable game overall.
  13. It'll be interesting to see how Station Camp's big man (Drew I believe his name is ...) and Greenbrier's Logan Greer match-up in this one. Logan definitely has the height advantage, but Drew can easily shove him out of the lane. If Greenbrier can find a way to get Greer the ball consistently down low, they shouldn't have too much trouble in this one. Also, once Greer gets the ball he needs to take it into Station Camp's big man and draw the foul and get him out early. Once he's out, SC doesn't really have anyone that will be able to stop Greer. Greer is going to have to bow up and front Station Camp's big man, or he will get pushed around all night.
  14. I haven't seen some of these guys play that are being posted on here, but I have seen Josh Slater, junior point guard for David Lipscomb, play at least 10 games, and he is really good. He is an unbelievable ball-handler, passer, and will drive into the lane and take it up strong every time. He's already tearing it up this year ... but just wait till next year ...
  15. Ok so I was at the DL-LA game and I watched and laughed as LA fans screamed their heads off at the referee all game. And yes, as a witness at the game, DLs coach did scream that the other coach was out of his box. However, the referees gave him more than "a few seconds" .. try 9 or 10 seconds and the coach did not even move. So, they did the logical thing, and gave him a technical foul. Now, the game would not have even really been close if DL hadn't of made a few bad passes here and there and gave LA the ball - LA didn't take it away, DL gave it to them. DL goes up by 6 or 7 and LA decides they are going to run some kind of half-court trap on DL. So, DL does what the do best - spread out the defense and make the other team work to guard them. LA was obviously getting worn down at first because DL was getting easy baskets. Then, DL made a few stupid passes, and LA got points off of those. Also ... to all the LA fans : Quit complaining about calls even if they are bad. Don't think it's going to change the outcome of this game ... Just kind of shows the difference here too ... cause you got the LA parents in the stands who are ALL OVER the refs during the game, and then I got DL players tell me after the game how nice of a guy Wilson Cates is and the other players as well. Great game.
