Correct...and by the same token, if they step the penalty off from behind the line of scrimmage, somebody has to get a lost-yardage run/reception to the point of enforcement. I usually would charge it as team lost yardage, like a kneel-out, rather than giving it to the individual since he didn't do anything wrong.

I won't dispute that this year's Bartlett team wouldn't have been likely to advance, but it's not out of the question. But tio say that this team wasn't a real playoff caliber team is *preposterous*. On the field, they were the #3 team in the region and beat the #2 head to head. Millington was out of everybody's league this year, that's fine. But only Bolton played Millington closer in the region than Bartlett did. It's bad enough for Bolton to be punished because they self-reported unknowingly playing an ineligible player rather than sitting on the knowledge for a couple more weeks and just forfeiting after the fact. But for Bartlett to get left out of the playoffs because of a *BOLTON* issue...that's just unbelievable.

Perhaps a better title of this thread would be "Ineligible Bolton player costs Bartlett football team".

Regardless of the decision that is made today... A win in the courtroom should not count equally as a win on the field. I like the NCAA system where they simply vacate the victories rather than change them to losses. It's beyond absurd for Bartlett to be punished because of a violation by a school other than Bartlett. Spartansfan, I would argue that it's not that easy to be pumped up for game 10 when you know there's a game 11. I know when I was in high school, I would have been looking ahead to the playoffs already. Add what pbert said about resting starters, etc., and it's worse.

His family was in town for tomorrow night's game already...I just can't imagine what this must be like for them... Sad as it is, this stuff happens everywhere -- an Ole Miss athlete was murdered this weekend also, but you don't hear Oxford mentioned as a dangerous place. Just goes to show, you have to be vigilant anywhere and everywhere.

I'll be in the minority view on this...I don't care. I didn't care about what McGwire did (it wasn't steroids in 1998 -- andro is not a steroid. It's similar, but it's not the same). I don't care what Bonds did (and I'm less convinced than seemingly anyone else that he actually did anything illegal, but that's a different story). It wasn't against the rules of baseball at the time in any of the three cases. My question is this...why is baseball the only sport that gets this kind of microscope? When the heck is anyone ever going to look at the NFL? Bonds would be considered undersized at more than half the positions on a football field...and at a couple of positions, he'd be considered as much as 150 pounds too light. Bonds gained 25 pounds over 15 years and got slow...NFL players gain 25 pounds in one summer and get faster...and it's the *baseball* players that get accused of having a bigger drug problem?

Now Carp's out for next year too. As for Reyes, IMO it's an issue of Duncan trying too hard to "fix" him, which has killed his confidence, his command and his stuff. He can throw at the major league level. He showed that last year. He can't throw the way Duncan wants him to. Duncan seems to be dogmatic now that the only way to succeed in the majors is to be a soft-tossing nibbler throwing a two-seam fastball at the knees all game. Reyes can't do that -- his arm action sets up all wrong for it. He throws a four-seam fastball high and a devastating changeup at the knees. They had him rework his delivery to get on top of the ball more, and he can't control his fastball that well and it totally blows his ability to throw his changeup for strikes.

I hope so, but that's not the Cardinals' M.O. They'll probably just put him right back into the mix in STL. They don't send their stars down on rehab often.

I don't think Cincinnati has the pitching. Arroyo's not as good as he has been this year, and he and Harang are the only particularly good pitchers they have...maybe Weathers. Coffey's another one who's not this good. I think the Cards could be threatened with Pujols out, I'm just not sure Cincinnati has enough to do it.

Again, drinking off slimps could be argued as one. Or stress relief or something. Point is, he used a substance that was against federal law.

From what I understand, steroids are really only a problem if you abuse them. Amphetamines are just as illegal as steroids. Alcohol was illegal in the US from 1920 to 1933. Which means that Rith was breaking laws every time he got drunk. And by all accounts, that was very, very common.

Amphetamines ("greenies" were very, very commonly used in Aaron's day, and there's varying reports of how much they're used even now. They help concentration and put off mental fatigue -- which makes them performance-enhancing. Alcohol was against federal law when Ruth played. I'm sure it could also be something that helps mentally -- drink off the 0-4 night, etc. But regardless, it was against federal law, and that's the argument you're using about steroids. (Nevermind that they were actually banned in 1991, they just didn't come up with an enforcement method until a few years ago)

What about the illegal substances Aaron and Ruth used? Amphetamines and alcohol, respectively. Does that make them cheaters? FWIW, Ruth is the greatest of all time, but Bonds is much closer than most people give him credit for.

Why should they? You can lift weights without steroids. And Pujols has always been a big guy, he's gained an average of 3 pounds a year in MLB so far.

Two in a day is not a doubleheader. They all had at least a few hours before they came back out to play again. All I'm saying is that it's not as big a difference in the schedule as several people have said. There were baseball teams that played twice in a day also. And, would you believe it, there were teams that played two on both Wednesday and Thursday. Covington, Franklin, Farragut, CBHS, and MUS all played twice Wednesday and twice again on Thursday. And unlike the current softball format, those were true doubleheaders -- chalk the field and play again.

I agree with you that it's different...I can't stand it. No offense to softball fans. But again, you're playing the same number of games. The only difference is that instead of a 4x2 tournament, you're playing a pure double-elim. You go from having 13 to 15 games to having 14 or 15. A team that wins all the way through would need four games to do it, just like the current format. A team that loses early would need to play seven, compared to six in the current format. And just looking at the softball tournament's schedule, I don't really see a big difference between the two schedules. AAA softball only used one field except for Wednesday morning. And BTW, in this year's softball tournament no team played a doubleheader. No, the NCAA has not changed the format to double elimination. It's still 4x2, but with a best of three between the winners, not a single game.

The unfortunate thing is that all the lynch mob hysteria has gotten to the point that people don't realize how good he was up until 1998. He's a bit of a jerk, sure, but there's been no shortage of jerks that were in the inner circle of baseball's elite. Including the guy he just passed on the HR list.
