(Photos courtesy Ryan Roddy) Three wrestlers from Connecticut won national championships at the 88th annual National Prep School championship tournament at Lehigh University on Saturday. Southbury’s William Henckel and Sarah Henckel, who both wrestle for Blair Academy in Blair, N.J., each won national titles while Wallingford’s Calli Gilchrist of Choate Rosemary Hall won her first title at 114 pounds and was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Green Farms Academy out of Westport had 10 wrestlers earn All-American honors for finishing in the top eight of their respective weight classes to help the Dragons finish fifth for the second straight year. It’s the most medalists (10) and most points scored (191½) in tournament history by a Connecticut school. The Dragons were led by Newtown’s Nate Taylor (190), who finished third and earned All-American honors for a fourth year. William Henckel, a junior who has committed to attend No. 1 Penn State, went 4-0 with three pins to win the national title with a 7-2 win over Dominic Federici of Wyoming Seminary. Henckel beat Isael Perez of Northfield Mt. Hermon, 14-6, in the semifinals. It was third All-American honor William Henckel, who was second in 2022 at 145 and third at 150 pounds a year ago. Sophomore Sarah Henckel went 2-0 at 152 pounds to win her second straight national championship with a pin over Reagan Ramadan of West Nottingham Academy in 1:37. Gilchrist went 3-0 with three pins at 114 pounds to win her first national title. Two pins were in under a minute. She was awarded the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award. Teammate Sarah McLaughlin of Wallingford finished second at 120 pounds after getting pinned in 3:46 by Emma Bacon of Wyoming Seminary. Gilchrist and McLaughlin helped Choate Rosemary Hill finish fourth as a team, the highest finish by a Connecticut in the short four-year history of the girls tournament. Somers’ Natalie Accorsi of Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., finished third at 120 pounds. Wyoming Seminary won the tournament with 187 points, followed by Phillips Andover from Massachusetts in second place with 114 points. Blair Academy was third with 94 points with Choate Rosemary Hall scoring 49 points with four competitors. Green Farms’ girls team was fifth with 41½ points with three competitors. Freshman Kayla Batres of Milford finished second at 107 pounds while teammate April Torres of Shelton finished third at 165 with a 4-1 record and four consecutive wins in the consolation round. In the boys tournament, Taylor finished third with a 3-2 win over Nick Wehmeyer of Pennsylvania’s Malvern Prep. He won four matches- three by technical fall – to advance to the semifinals before dropping a 3-2 decision to Jake Daley of Wyoming seminary. Taylor is just the third wrestler in state history to earn prep school All-American honors four times. Pomfret’s Josh Wildes (2001-04) and Loomis Chaffee’s Mike Powers (2003-06) were also four-time prep school All-Americans from Connecticut. Xavier Giles (165) from the Bronx, N.Y. was fourth for the Dragons along with Marlborough’s Jackson Heslin (120) and North Haven’s Giuseppe Iamunno (144). Also earning medals and All-American honors for the Dragons were Newtown’s Brighton Karvoski (sixth, 106), Gabriel Garabaldi (sixth, 285), Norwalk’s Ronnie Chisholm (seventh, 150), Danbury’s Dom Iaquinto (seventh, 215) and Norwalk’s J.T. Schneider (eighth, 138). For Greens Farms Academy, it was the third consecutive top 10 finish at the national tournament. Freshman Colby Houle of Canton earned All-American honors with his sixth place finish for Northfield Mount Hermon at 132 pounds. Houle was 4-3 with two pins. 4. A visibly emotional and understandably upset Cleveland head coach, Joey Knox, respectfully declined comment after the tournament. Although the unfortunate ending to the Blue Raiders' night put a bit of a damper on the celebration, Cleveland fans had plenty to cheer about as the Lady Raiders wrestled to their second straight state title in only three years of girls wrestling at Cleveland. The state title is Fowler's first after medaling in 2022 and 2023. The gold medal is also the first for Russel, who also medaled in 2023. Fowler's brother, Cy Fowler, won the second state title of the night for the Raiders with his victory at 165. Fowler, a senior at Cleveland, had medaled all four years as a Blue Raider. The Fowler family had even more to celebrate as sister Piper Fowler won her third straight state title with a victory at 165. Fowler also medaled in 2022 and 2023 at 152 and 165 pounds. Two of the Blue Raiders' wins came through former Blue Raiders wrestler Pete Miller who leads the Summit wrestling team. Cleveland's 157-pound wrestler Cy Fowler and 285 pounder Tyson Russel bested Miller's Spartans for the title. Miller, part of Cleveland's extended wrestling family had five Spartans battling for championships. https://www.chattanoogan.com/2024/2/25/483308/Cleveland-Sees-Six-Champions-In-March.aspx. Smith also added two more wins to his ledger against Midway and Campbellsville to improve his record to 16-3 on the season. Rocco Horvath re-enters the polls coming in as the 18th-ranked wrestler at 184. Horvath has the most wins on the team this season with a 22-6 record. He has posted four falls, three tech falls, and six major decisions this season. Entering the poll for the first time is heavyweight Kawuan Deboe. Deboe transferred in at the break and has gone 2-0 for Cumberland with wins over No. 9 Carlos Figueroa from Lindsey Wilson and a win over the Patriots Wylie Dunn. The Phoenix now have their eyes set on postseason competition that will gear up on February 16th for the Mid-South Conference Championships in Bowling Green with the NAIA National Championships to follow in March. 12. Home Obituaries OBITUARY: Alexander ‘Alex’ Ryan Winer By Jen Haley - January 29, 2024 Alexander “Alex” Ryan Winer, age 23 of Cordova, TN passed away on January 22, 2024. Alex is a graduate of Page High School in Franklin, TN where he participated on the Wrestling and Lacrosse Teams. Following graduation, Alex attended Columbia State Community College where he earned his EMT, AEMT and National Registry certificates after which he worked private ambulance service and spent most of his free time as a volunteer firefighter at Nolensville Fire Department. He attended Murfreesboro Fire Academy and then received a call from Memphis Fire Department. He was very proud to wear the MFD uniform. Alex was not merely a firefighter; he was a beacon of strength, friendship, compassion, and he cherished his family above all else. His commitment to service went beyond the call of duty. His passion for life was contagious and he had an uncanny ability to bring a smile to the faces of everyone he met. His love for the outdoors and his mischievous pranks added an extra layer of joy to the lives of those around him. He could play a song on the guitar after hearing it only a few times. A prolific tinkerer, he enjoyed “fixing” things. If you’re missing any tools, they’re probably still in his tool box. He loved fishing, even in questionable places. But as Alex would say “the fishin’ is just too good!” But his favorite hobby, and the one he was best at, was being with friends. Alex was a loving son, a cherished brother, and a loyal friend to many. His infectious laughter could light up the darkest room, and his warm spirit made an everlasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Alex was selflessly devoted to serving and protecting the communities of Williamson County and Memphis, TN. He was a mentor, a friend, and a brother to those who stood along side him in service. His dedication to ensuring the safety of others was unwavering, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those he touched is immeasurable. Alex’s memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those he served alongside and the countless lives he touched. As we say our goodbyes, let us not mourn the loss of Alex, but celebrate the incredible life he lived. Let his legacy inspire us to be better, to serve with dedication, and to cherish the bonds we share. Alex is preceded in death by his father, Pete Winer; grandfather, Ralph Winer; grandmother, Elizabeth Jones. Alex is survived by his mother, Jamie Jones-Winer; step-father, Randy Hughes both of Brentwood, TN; brothers, Jacob Winer of Nashville, TN, Ben Winer, Cole Winer and Steven Hughes all of Franklin, TN; sister, Kristy (Blake) Simoneaux of Spring Hill, TN; nephew, Wyatt Heavrin; grandmother, Marilyn Winer of Del Ray Beach, FL and many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, January 30, 2024 with visitation two hours prior to the service at Thompson Station Church. Pastor Brandon Billups will officiate. Honorary Pall Bearers are: Driver Caleb Webster Knight, Private Rhomes Andrew Sessums Aur, Private Peter Choukalas, Lieutenant Brandon Allen of Memphis Fire Department; Firefighter/EMT Andre Rufino Vieira of Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue, Engine 17, and the entire Memphis Fire Department. 13. Thanks Mr Hunt!!! Local Teams Geared Up For State Duals Wrestling Five Team Champions Will Be Crowned In Franklin Saturday Night Friday, February 2, 2024 John Hunt All the hard work has been done and it’s almost time to celebrate. That’s always the case when the TSSAA State Duals wrestling tournament gathers in Franklin at the spacious Williamson County Agricultural Exposition Center to crown five teams as state champions. Chattanooga has been the most dominant area in high school wrestling for a long, long time and it appears that trend will continue on Saturday. Cleveland and Boyd Buchanan are defending champions while Bradley, Signal Mountain and Baylor all finished second a year ago. And don’t forget the Cleveland girls as they were the best in their division last February as well. Soddy Daisy and Signal Mountain are the two local entries in Division I, Class A while Cleveland and Bradley will be battling in D-I-AA. Boyd Buchanan is the early favorite in D-II, Class A-AA while Baylor and McCallie will be among the hunters in D-II, Class AAA. It all begins on Saturday at 9 a.m. local time with the quarterfinal rounds in both of the public school brackets. The first round of consolation follows at 11 before the championship semis are held for the public schools at 1. The private schools will have their semfinal matches at 3 while all of the championship matches will begin at 7. DIVISION I, CLASS A: The Soddy Daisy Trojans last won a state duals title back in 2012 and they appear to be the early favorite as their top-ranked in their division and enter the tournament with a perfect 31-0 record. The Trojans face Munford in their first match. The Signal Mountain Eagles finished as runner-up last year. They lost some key members from last year’s team and took a pretty good beating from Soddy Daisy in the region duals, but the Eagles are fully capable of making it back to the finals. They will face Tullahoma in their first match. Soddy Daisy coach Ulric Winesburgh knows just how hard his kids have worked this season, including early morning workouts on Saturday to get used to early morning matches. He knows that his team is fully capable of winning a state title, but they can’t afford to look past anyone. “We’re good to go. We’ve had some really intense practices lately, but they’ve been shorter. We just want to be prepared for the big moments, but we’re not taking anyone for granted,” Winesburgh said earlier this week. “We just want to keep doing what we’ve doing and I’m fully confident that we can get the job done. We’ve won a bunch of matches this season, but we haven’t accomplished anything yet. Signal Mountain and Pigeon Forge have both won more titles than we have, so we just have to be ready,” he added. Signal Mountain enters the Saturday action with a record of 21-3, the only losses to MBA, Baylor and SD. Coach Houston Clement knows that the hardest matches are yet to be wrestled, but he also knows that a state title is one of his team’s goals and he’s anxious to get started. “We’re getting close as it’s almost crunch time,” he said earlier this week. “I knew that Soddy Daisy had a good team, but didn’t know just how good until they whipped us. But I was super proud of how we bounced back with that sectional win on the road. We responded in a most positive way. “All of these teams are really good, so all the small stuff line coin flips will be so important. Soddy Daisy is definitely the best team, but we’re going up there with nothing to lose. There is no pressure on us. Anything is possible at this point. Our studs have to get the maximum bonus points and the others will have to step up too. “Our goals have not changed. We’re going to Franklin this weekend with the intention of winning a state title,” Clement concluded on a positive note. DIVISION I, CLASS AA: It hasn’t been that long ago where the Bradley Bears were the most dominant high school team in the state with countless state titles to show for it. That honor now belongs to the Cleveland Blue Raiders, who have won the past six duals and traditional titles. Cleveland won all 16 of its dual meets this season and currently has an unbelievable streak of 135 straight dual victories. Cleveland will face its toughest test in Saturday’s first match when they face Summit. The Spartans are currently ranked third in the state mat poll and are coached by former Cleveland standout Pete Miller. Bradley qualified by beating Blackman in the sectional round and will face Dobyns-Bennett in its first match. “We’re all good and ready to get started,” said Cleveland coach Joey Knox. “I’m a little bit surprised with our draw, but it is what it is and we’ll just have to take care of business as usual. We beat Summit by 19 points earlier in the season, but their lineup has changed. This tournament is ours to lose, so we just don’t want to do anything to mess it up. “We’re going up there with a job to do. We need to get bonus points every chance we can and limit what we let the other guys have. I’m just hoping we can do a little celebrating later Saturday night,” Knox added. It’s been a rebuilding year for Bradley coach Bryant Blackman, who is in his first year as the Papa Bear. Bradley has 11 starters in the lineup for the first time ever, so it’s been a learning process from then until now. “Us beating Blackman in the sectional on the road was huge as that was a major hurdle for us to clear,” Blackman said earlier in the week. “I like our draw. We’ll have to show up ready to compete, but it’s always been like that. The only pressure on our team comes from us. We have 11 new starters, so we knew it would be interesting. Our focus is to just keep getting better every day. We all know that nothing matters until February, so for us to get back to the state duals is a big deal,” Blackman nodded. DIVISION II, CLASS A-AA: Boyd Buchanan won their first state duals title a year ago and should be considered a favorite to do it again. They face BGA in Saturday’s first match with the winner taking on the Brentwood Academy-Lakeway Christian winner for the championship. The Bucs got a later start than normal after their football team advanced to the state finals. They are still burdened by several open spots in their lineup as forfeits have been their toughest opponent, but Boyd Buchanan beat Lakeway just last week, so coach Michael Sutherland is confident that his kids can do it again. “Our dual meet record isn’t that good as forfeits have killed us, but I feel good about where we are at this point,” Sutherland said during phone conversation. “It should be another barn-burner where everything depends on the coin flip. It’s nice to be the defending champion, but it’s also a burden as we can’t afford to get complacent. We just have to stay hungry. It won’t be easy and anything can happen, but I can promise you that we’ll be prepared when the first whistle blows,” he said. DIVISION II, CLASS AAA: Father Ryan beat Baylor in last year’s final, snapping a five-year winning streak for the Red Raiders, who have been nationally ranked most of the season. Baylor had a tough week last week when two defending state champions were dismissed from school and the Baylor team didn’t respond very well in a tough loss at McCallie. As a result, McCallie is now ranked second in the state behind Cleveland while Baylor is currently fourth behind Summit. Baylor will face Father Ryan in its first match while McCallie will take on Christian Brothers. “We’re excited about the possibilities and we’ve put that other stuff behind us,” said Baylor coach Rex Kendle. “We beat Father Ryan by 13 points earlier in the season, so we know we can beat them. We’ve been wrestling teams better than us all season, so I guess we have a losing record, but we’ve rallied the troops and we’ll be ready on Saturday afternoon. “We know that we’re fully capable of winning again and our program is much bigger than the two kids we lost. We are totally embracing the challenge and know that every member of our team has to step up and do their part,” Kendle said. McCallie hasn’t been among the state contenders in recent years, but coach Jake Yost has done an outstanding job of rebuilding a once-proud program. They enter Saturday’s action with a record of 9-1, the only loss early before the football players had joined the team. “Beating Baylor was certainly a big deal for us, but my guys have been working really hard all season and I feel like we have a good chance to beat Christian Brothers. We just have to compete hard and continue doing what we’ve been doing. It doesn’t really matter who we face as we just need to stay focused on us. “There’s quite a bit of parity in this division this year, but I feel like we’re definitely in the picture. I know that it will be a tough day, but we just have to show up ready to battle,” Yost said matter of factly. THE CLEVELAND GIRLS are also heavy favorites to win after taking their first title a year ago. The Lady Blue Raiders face Northwest in their first match while the Bradley Bearettes take on Clarksville in the other girls’ semifinal. 18. Baylor Wrestlers Whip MBA, Father Ryan McCallie Loses To Both Nashville Schools Saturday At Baylor Saturday, January 15, 2022 - by John Hunt The post season tournaments are just around the corner for high school wrestling teams and seedings are always critical for such events. Montgomery Bell Academy is in the same region with Baylor and McCallie, so they came down for a double-dual meet on Saturday at Baylor’s Duke Arena. Father Ryan is in a different region, but have traditionally come down for the same day of competition, so the Purple Irish were present as well. The host Red Raiders had no problem defeating either team, posting a 51-18 win over MBA in the first match before pounding Father Ryan by a similar 54-12 final. Father Ryan picked up a 59-12 win over McCallie in the first match while MBA was a 60-15 winner over the Blue Tornado in the second. Baylor coach Rex Kendle knows that this time of season is critical as teams prepare for the post-season, hoping to peak at just the right time with the plan being to accomplish the final goal, which is winning a state championship. The Red Raiders have done just fine along those lines as they have won the State Duals and Traditional titles in each of the past four years. Kendle knew that both of these teams on Saturday would bring strong individuals, but he was more than pleased with the final result. “We came to scrap today. I thought we were a little sloppy at times, but I’m happy with the heart we showed,” Kendle said while the mats were being rolled up and returned to the Baylor wrestling arena. “We know that Father Ryan has a really good team, so that was a real test for us. We just have to keep working as we want to keep rolling, but we can’t afford to be complacent. “Our goal is to outwork them every single day, but these guys are not scared of hard work. I feel like we’re peaking at the right time,” Kendle added. Nine of Baylor’s 14 individuals won two matches on Saturday, including Garrison Dendy, Ryan Tisdale and David Harper with two pins each. Jacob Bond won two matches both by major decisions while Jackson Bond, Nate Askew, Mason Alley, Michael Kinsey and Omaury Alvarez had two wins as well. Jackson Bond and Askew both scored takedowns in the final seconds to win against Father Ryan, Bond’s providing a stirring 4-3 comeback against Cason Roark. Askew saved overtime as his takedown was the difference in a 3-1 win over Chancery Deane. James Howard was the only McCallie wrestler to win two matches as he won both by pin. Carson Gentle had a pin against Father Ryan while Ja’Von McMahan had a 7-2 decision over MBA’s Clay Lamb. Nicholas Ridings also picked up a forfeit against MBA. The always-intense and exciting dual meet between Baylor and McCallie will take place at McCallie on Friday, Jan. 28. That’s the same day these two will meet again in basketball at Baylor. 19. Look up on Track wrestling for more results and TSSAA —————— Chattanooga Times/Free Press, Tenn. Cleveland wrestlers beat rival Bradley Central in latest show of dominance Patrick MacCoon, Chattanooga Times Free Press, Tenn. Fri, January 14, 2022, 4:16 AM·3 min read Jan. 14—CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Cleveland High School senior wrestler Tetoe Boyd raised his hands high, making the No. 1 gesture to the crowd that packed Bradley Central's Jim Smiddy Arena to the rafters Thursday night. Boyd and the Blue Raiders put together another dominant performance on the mat, with coach Joey Knox's team earning a 50-18 victory against the Bears, their crosstown and Class AA rivals. Cleveland, which has a No. 1 state ranking, is on a mission to become the first program in TSSAA history to sweep the state duals and traditional tournament team titles five years in a row. Right now, there seems to be no reason to doubt the Blue Raiders' ability to accomplish that task — at least from the outside. Knox and his wrestlers are looking inward, though, and deeper. Ad "Our studs did their job," Knox said after his team improved to 15-0 in duals this season. "The guys who were supposed to pin, pinned. Some of the others have stuff they need to figure out, though. We are gearing back up to make a run, and we have a lot of stuff to fix still. "Tonight was still a pretty good showing. We gave up three more points than I thought we would." Cleveland 126-pounder Logan Fowler had the quickest pin of the night as he quickly drove his opponent to the mat and kept him in a bad spot until the official slapped the mat after 53 seconds. With an 11-3 major decision from Bentley Ellison to begin the dual at 120, Fowler's pin and a powerful showing by top-ranked Arlo Laxton — who won by injury forfeit — the Blue Raiders jumped out to a 16-0 lead. Third-ranked Bradley Central was provided its first points from Ethan Lipsey, who won 8-3 at 138. However, the Bears lost momentum at 145. After getting an earful from Knox to quit trying to throw his opponent, Hagen Cooper stepped up for the Blue Raiders. Fighting back from a 4-0 deficit, Cooper landed a defensive pin as he drove his back down into his opponent for six team points. Cooper's victory drew his teammates off the bench and a loud roar from the road crowd. "Hagen is a good wrestler but still lacks some experience," Knox said. "I challenged him to get it together, and he did just that. Our guys are tough, but I won't be satisfied until we have all 14 win." Cleveland freshmen Cy Fowler and Lucas Szymborski added to the lead — Fowler with a 2-0 overtime victory at 152, while Syzmborski (160) secured bonus points for his team with a late takedown for a 13-4 major decision. Bradley Central's Knox Watson won 4-3 at 170 as he kept his composure while Cleveland's Jax Ernest was given an unsportsmanlike penalty that was pivotal to the outcome. Jake Fox (182) and first-ranked Bryson Terrell (113) picked up pins for the Bears. However, Cleveland's star power was too much to handle. At 195, Boyd scored 12 points before ending his match with a second-period pin, while two-time state champion Ashton Davis secured a first-period pin. The match was sealed when Jared Canales (220) landed a 3-2 victory in the fourth overtime. Contact Patrick MacCoon at pmaccoon@timesfreepress.com. Follow him on Twitter @PMacCoon

Watts then turned his attention to the mats with the high school’s former co-op program at East Robertson. “The first day at practice I ended up loving it, and I just fell in love with the sport,” he said. “It gave me an adrenaline rush that I’ve never had before. “I have good length, (and) I’ve developed a lot of strength and skill throughout the years.” Things started to click in the middle of his first year, and that adrenaline rush carried over when White House Heritage founded its wrestling program the following season. Watts has qualified for the state tournament every year since. He set a new career best for wins on Tuesday. “I think the biggest thing has been his movement,” said Heritage wrestling coach Joseph Hill. “He knows his body and can move his body really well. He’s learned several moves that he loves to run, and he’s homed in and really worked on those skills. “He’s wrestling at the elite level.” Coming off a December championship in the Bruise Brothers Invitational, Watts quickly knocked off previously undefeated Jamel King at Nashville Christian for his 11th consecutive win. His lone loss this season came against Wilson Central’s Matthew Hills, who sits as the sixth-best wrestler in Pin-TN’s AA rankings. Watts also holds decisions over large division wrestlers from Dickson County, Gallatin, McGavock and Springfield. With nine remaining regular season matches to prepare, Watts hopes he can improve upon his 6-4 state tournament record and end his high school career on top. “I think my chances are a lot better this year,” he said. “I’m trying to at least make first this year. I think I have a better chance. “I just think wrestling is meant for me. I think it’s the only sport that I can really do.” RESULTS: Nashville Christian 51, White House Heritage 21 -Nikolas Taylor (For.) -Deion King over Brayden Crouch (13-7) -Kyle Watts over Jamel King (4-2) -Peyton Woodard over Mason Hawk (Pin) -Richmond Flowers over Jacob Mahoney (Pin) -Jaden Potts (For.) -Daniel Duncan (For.) -Carson Upchurch over Keith Lunsford (Pin) -Brody Parnell over Logan Shoemaker (Pin) -Donavan Brown over Alex Fentress (Pin) -Nathaniel Slough over Gage Smith (Pin) -Christopher Mitchell over Alex Taylor (Pin) -Noah Delervant over Benjamin Ivey (Pin)
  24. Chattanooga Times/Free Press, Tenn. Cody Chittum of Cleveland, Tennessee, impresses as prep wrestler at UTC's Southern Scuffle Gene Henley, Chattanooga Times Free Press, Tenn. Mon, January 3, 2022, 2:44 AM·3 min read Jan. 3—This weekend provided a pleasingly surreal moment for Shane Chittum. As his son Cody was growing up, the two of them would frequent the Southern Scuffle, with the young wrestler dreaming of someday competing in the two-day tournament hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. On Saturday evening, Shane looked onto one of the mats at UTC's McKenzie Arena and saw his son jogging around, preparing for a match in the quarterfinals on the opening day of this year's event. "In 2013, Cody was 9 years old and we came to this event and we were spectators," Shane said Sunday. "It's father and son enjoying the moment, and now we've been on this journey for 10 years." Cody Chittum's dream came true — and perhaps a year or two earlier than could have been expected by the former Cleveland High School standout, who last year helped the Blue Raiders to TSSAA Class AAA titles in state duals and traditional tournament competition. Chittum advanced to the Southern Scuffle quarterfinals Saturday before dropping his final two matches, a pretty good run considering he's still considered a high school student. Shane said he petitioned to have Cody compete in the event unattached and wanted to "see where he's at before he goes to college." Not that Cody minded. He was more disappointed about a high-ankle sprain that caused him to lose his last match Saturday and have to forfeit Sunday. "Since I was young, I've watched the Scuffle, and it was a cool opportunity to be a high schooler that's part of a college tournament," he said. "You see other people that you've watched their technique, and now you're getting to wrestle against them." Chittum currently attends the Apex Learning School, an online-only program that helps accelerate the graduation process. Chittum completed his junior year of high school in December and is expected to graduate this summer, which will allow him to start college in the fall semester at the University of Minnesota; he has already committed to continue his wrestling career with the Gophers. After winning a 120-pound state championship as an eighth grader at McCallie, the Cleveland native spent his freshman season at the Blair Academy in New Jersey, then wound up enrolling at Cleveland in January 2021 and competing for the Blue Raiders, winning all 10 of his matches on his way to the 145-pound state title in AAA. He won each of his four matches in the state tournament by pin. He's currently the country's top-ranked 145-pounder and one of the top overall wrestlers in the nation, according to multiple publications. "I grew up right down the street from the (Allan) Jones Wrestling Center, so I had wrestled with those guys a bunch," Cody said of his time at Cleveland High School. "I liked being a part of that family, the family I've grown up with my whole life when we would go to the same Scuffle tournament. "Even though it was just one year, it was still very special to me." Just like weekends like this past one are special to his father. "You've got your sorrows about it, but you also know it's the right thing for him," Shane said. "You realize that when they're young, every day matters and every sporting event is stressful, but as they get older, it's actually easier. "Yesterday was a sign that he's growing up and officially leaving." Mocs medal UTC had two medalists at the tournament, which returned after a year off due to the coronavirus outbreak. Brayden Palmer, a sophomore who was not among the top eight seeds in his bracket, rallied after losing his first-round match to finish third at 133 pounds. Fourth-seeded Fabian Gutierrez placed sixth at 125, with the sixth-year senior winning way into the semifinals before losing by decision and forfeiting due to injury.
