Robert Jemison, current BGA coach and 27 year coaching veteran, Fred Rigsby, former McGavock coach and long time Middle TN referee assigner, David Scott, former 138 lb state champ from Hillwood, MTSU wrestler and TSSAA referee are the remaining Lifetime Service members and Scott Wells, 2x 275 lb state champ, NFL Pro Bowler, and Super Bowl champ with the Green Bay Packers is the Outstanding American inductee. Scott is the current Brentwood Academy head coach.

Yes, it is really going to be Sunday. Many of the other state chapters host very successful banquets on Sundays. I know it is a change for us. If it turns out to be a mistake then we will adjust next year. We also had trouble finding a facility that was available on a Saturday and large enough for our group and not overly expensive. All of the venues we regularly use in the Nashville area have gone up substantially in price...so Sunday it is. We will go a little earlier because of it. I hope you will support us in spite of it being on Sunday. We have a really good class this year. We are catching an under recognized group this year. We have a ton of guys who have contributed greatly to youth wrestling. These are the guys getting the little ones hooked. It takes a special coach to work with the young kids...and their "eager" parents. We will honor three coaches responsible for getting so many started in the sport. These three guys have all contributed a ton more than just getting more Wildcats, Copperheads and Irish kids on wrestling mats. Pat Welsh, Chuck Bean and Matt Gorham have been instrumental in growing wrestling in Tennessee and supporting the high school programs around them. We are honoring these three and four others. I'll give you their names in a separate post.

Hey Coach-great event yesterday! Delicious food, great venue, fun atmosphere, fantastic fireworks, and the wrestling was pretty good too! Wrestling started on time. You have cultivated good people and I appreciate the weather you ordered. Can't tell you how many times I've prayed for a nice breeze in the gym. Hope you do this again!

I post this knowing this is a no win proposition. It's easy to officiate from the stands and we certainly make enough mistakes on our own. We only have three objectives and they are in this order-to the best of our abiltiy make sure that the wrestlers compete safely, make sure no one has an unfair advantage over the other and to recognize when points have been earned. We honest to God don't care who wins. I only worked one DII match and that was the finals so I can't address anything before then. The fact that you confused who is from Nashville and who is not is fine because it is not about us. There were no refs who worked consecutive matches (other than to assist and have the whistle the next match) so conspiracy theorisits about inconsistencies from match A to A+1 are just random. We are working on becoming more consistant across the state but there are still minor differences among us. In the big picture, did the wrestlers leave Franklin healthy? For the most part the answer is yes. Did the best teams win (did someone receive an unfair advantage)? I don't follow the results to really know, but I understand that Baylor wrestled Ryan three times and won all three, Pigeon Forge has been dominate all year and while Wilson Central has closed the gap that Cleveland was still the better team on Sat. Specifically, in the DII finals, I called both the 113 and 126 matches when stalling seemed to be an issue (according to this Board). At 126, the better wrestler won, however, there were times in the match when one wrestler wasn't (in the opinion of this referee) trying to score and instead was trying to shorten the match. He was penalized accordingly. The easy stalling call for a referee is when one wrestler exposes the other for stalling. The tougher one is when neither is opening up. Typically the ref wants to hit one for stalling, if the action doesn't pick up the other is hit shortly after. It's amazing how quickly the behavior changes after the first stalling call. Many times both wrestlers pick it up after the first warning, sometimes it takes more. Were some wrestlers tryng not to get pinned...probably. It takes so much courage to step on the mat and compete especially when you know you are overmatched. That's one piece of what is great about our sport. Bravery is being afraid but doing it anyway. At 113, I'm not sure but I think with tie breakers the match was already over. Either way, the objective for the Ryan wrestler was to pin and Baylor wanted to keep from being pinned. Again, the better wrestler won (Baylor was warned, penalized once and penalized a second time for stalling) and while the Ryan kid dominated the match (in the opinion of this referee) he did not do enough to turn the Baylor kid, who did not run. In the third he was close to a Petersen and defended himself. As a referee, we are not there to decide matches. We recognize when points are earned and a fall nor stalling disqualification were earned. I think it was a glorious weekend of wrestling and hope the next couple of weeks are as good.

At least the next, maybe the one after that too. Depends on the reason for the ejection.

Join us for some golf and fellowship. We are attempting to set up an annual golf outing for nothing more than fellowship and to enjoy each others' company outside of the wrestling season while making fun of each of other on the course. This is not a tournament and there will be no first or second place awards. You may play on a team of four but you don't have to. The event will benefit the Wrestling Hall of Fame (who struggles to pay annual dues to National). This first year the event will be Chattanooga at Brainerd Golf Course on Sat, Jun 21. Tee times are 8-8:30 am. We tried to get afternoon times for those traveling but were unsuccessful. In the future that is our target because we'd like to have players from across the state. The format is how you want to play-two man, four man scramble. Wagering is encouraged. You can even play your own ball if you like. The cost is $75/player and lunch is included. Adam Connell (McCallie) is this year's Tennessee recipient of the Dave Schultz Award presented to an outstanding senior who excelled on the mat, classroom and community (but especially the mat). Lyssa Maki (Northeast) is the recipient of the first Tricia Saunders Award. Our neighbor to the south, Brandon Womack (Scottsboro, AL) is the Southeast Regional winner. The candidates are nominated locally and selected by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Congrats to all!

The Dave Schultz Award nominations for the outstanding senior wrestler in TN are due. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame selects the winner.

No, you're missing the point. The reward for all his hard work and wrestling excellence is the championship. It's the memory of winning the semi final match on fri night that got him to the finals...THE Finals. And then winning the last match of the season and getting his hand raised above every other wrestler in his division. That is the reward. The medal couldn't be big enough to capture that. The medal is only a token. It's not the reward. The experience is the reward. Having the best wrestlers in your weight class know that today you were better. That's the reward. Knowing you worked harder, sacrificed more, that's the reward, so please shut up about my son's medal isn't big enough.

Great instruction today and an even better cause. Thanks to Ryan and MBA and the whole Simpson Clan. Cumberland Univ provided some good instruction. Not sure but I think I saw Whites Creek and Hume-Fogg from Metro. Coach Bass is a very humble man who has given and cares deeply for his kids. I'm sure donations are still being accepted??
