  1. Campbell Co. played some decent defense vs. Heritage. Coming into the season, the D was the big question mark, but if Friday night's performance is any indication, and the D continues to improve, look for the Cougars to turn it around. Nick Lane is emerging as a force at DE, Chris Bowlin is a strong and steady performer, Josh Evans, Travis Leach and Colby Mattie all fly to the ball. The "team tackle" was back in full force vs. Heritage. Also, #33 Norton played lights out in the 2nd half and Cody Johnson is plugging the middle nicely. Offensively, the Cougars should get a big boost with the return of Chris Johnson. Against the Mountaineers, Josh Howard had some nice runs, but could not quite break the big one. Johnson, based on past history, could have been a huge difference maker vs. Heritage. With a rested Chris Johnson and a reportedly weakened Jefferson Co. defense, the Cougars could be poised for a big game. QB Brance Stiner and the Cougar receiving corps are not quite on the same page, but they are getting there. Howard makes some nice catches out of the backfield and Wesley Chapman is showing signs of getting his timing down. Look for more out of Aiken and Davis. Johnson is definitely a serious threat in the slot. It's Region time - this game is HUGE! I like the Cougars' chances in their home opener.
  2. First of all Rommel, congratulations on an outstanding game. Your ability to hit the corner and turn on the burners is something special. I have no cause to argue with you over the tackle of Johnson vs. Johnson, but if you was locked up blocking Chris, how do you know for certain that you were "7 yards from the sideline" with the speed of the game? Hopefully the tape, for what its worth, will show that the play was much closer to the sideline than you thought, because you were blocking him pretty well and Jessie Johnson was not slowing down. However, it is over. Jessie Johnson came back for an impressive second half and LC looks poised for a strong season. Good luck to you and your teammates the rest of the way.
  3. One big win and it appears the Heritage fans are ready to head to MurfVegas. Really love that optimism, but I wouldn't count the Cougars out so early in the season. Yes, the defense is very young and yes the offense has yet to get in a groove. However, despite the lopsided score, Campbell Co. did make some plays against a talented Lenoir City team that gives me hope for improvement. I think the Cougars may be more competitive than you Mountaineers are giving them credit for. I hope the Hertiage team is of the same mindset and don't think they have to strap them on for this "easy" game.
  4. I don't know what angle you seen the play from rubberbandman, but I had a bird's eye view of the play. Chris Johnson was fending off a blocker ON the sideline and wrapped up both players and their momentum took them into the fence which is FIVE yards off the sideline. Personal foul perhaps. Ejection = BS!
  5. Although the score would indicate otherwise, overall the Cougars did not play poorly tonight. The backbreaker came in the second quarter as the Panthers scored 2 TDs within a minute. With the score 0-0, on a 3rd down, Cusick threw a beautiful fade for the 1st TD. On the ensuing KO, the Cougars fumbled, LC recovered and 2 plays later they were up 12-0. Stiner threw a beautiful 39 yd TD to Josh Howard to tightened things up at 12-6 with little time left in the 1st half. Jessie Johnson almost broke the KO back, bringing it to the 50 before Chris Johnson tackled him on the sideline, forcing him into the fence. A personal foul penalty moved the ball to the Cougar 30 or so and Chris Johnson was ejected. Hightower (I think) took the ball into the endzone as time expired in the half giving the Panthers a 20-6 halftime lead. In the second half, with Chris Johnson ejected and All Big East DT Jessie Bowman sidelined for the Cougars, the teams could not mount much offense. Jessie Johnson or Hightower sealed the deal with a put return for a TD with minutes left in the contest. In the second half, the Panther D was ferocious putting constant pressure on Stiner. Definitely not the kind of start the Cougars wanted. Hightower, Cusick and J. Johnson are potent offensive weapons for the Panthers. Cougars need to regroup fast if they hope to rekindle the magic of last year . . .
  6. This is a really tough game to call. Campbell Co. has a very potentially potent offense, but the defense is full of question marks. Last year, the D carried the Cougars for the most part until mid-season when the offense got into a good groove. Brance Stiner and Chris Johnson each have All-State potential and the O-Line looks big and strong. Need a "go-to" WR to step up and the Cougars will score alot of points this year. Have no idea what Lenoir City will bring to the field. Looking at last year's result vs. mutual opponents, LC beat Scott Co. in week 2 42-13 and Campbell Co. beat Scott 39-12 in week 5. Both team defeated Mo-East, 9-0 for the Cougars in week 1 and 16-0 for LC in week 3. Gonna be an interesting game . . .
  7. ccDL92, Can you or another former Cougar that is following the team post the projected Defensive Line-up? There are so many new faces out there it is hard to know who is who. Thanks!
  8. Troy Reliford is still in the Patriots' backfield and is a strong and talented runner. Last year he hurt the Cougars almost as much as Shiverdecker. At least it will not be the 1-2 punch this year and the game is at home. I love Campbell Co.'s chances immensely in this early match-up.
  9. So it is confirmed that Coach Shouse is staying at Campbell Co. and not moving to Indiana as rumored? That is great news! The rumor mill has been running rampant in Cougar Country, but at least we know that Chris Johnson will complete his high school career as a Campbell County Cougar and that Coach Wells and company are getting ready for a return to the playoffs. The players have been working hard in the offseason and I can't wait for the first scrimmage. Is it true that Ronnie Lasley has accepted a position on the Cougar staff? If so, what will he be coaching?
  10. After watching Farragut's LB Nick Reviez is last year's playoffs, he gets my vote!
  11. While I cannot post with complete confidence that Coach David Wampler is leaving 5A Campbell Co. to go to 1A Oneida, I do know that Chris Johnson will be dressed in the orange and blue of the Cougars for his senior year. The rumor on Coach Wampler is gaining strength that he will join former Anderson Co. defensive coordinator Tony Lambert at Oneida. Reportedly, Coach Wampler will be the offensive coordinator and Lambert will run the defense. Despite the prospect of this tremendous loss, Cougar Head Coach Dewayne Wells is a high quality player's coach and the team will be competitivein '05. Don't write off the Cougars during the upcoming campaign. They finally got a taste of success last year and are very hungry for more. I'm confident that Coach Wells will have his team ready for the week 0 season opener. My only question /concern is: How can a 1A school pay $12,000 more for a coaching supplement than a 5A school? The rumor running rampant in the CC grapevine is that Coach Wampler is leaving only to be able to provide better for his family. You can't fault Coach Wampler, but sure as heck can let the CC School Board know they need to wake up and support the coaches!
  12. Senior-to-be Chris Johnson of Campbell Co. will definitely one to watch.
  13. Where are you getting your information DZbettin? I am somewhat curious because in the spring drills, the Cougars only had 1 or 2 players playing iron man ball and had around 40-45 players dressed for scrimmages.
  14. The better question is who will be the runner-up in Region 1 5A? 1. Dobyns-Bennett 2. Campbell Co. 3. Jefferson Co. 4. Sevier Co. or Science Hill
  15. Now I am very worried JC! Predicting a loss to Campbell Co. !?! Either Jefferson Co. will be down this year or you earned a small measure of respect for the Cougars based on last season, not just the JC game. Off-topic, but my Dixie Youth BB 7-8 yr old team finished up the season last night with an 11-0 record. They outscored their opponents 133-24. The reason I bring this up, they were the PATRIOTS!
  16. Here is some info on the Tennessee Football Coaches Association All-State team. Haven't found info on All-Region yet . . . Class 5A 2004 All-State Team Player School Arrington Bryson- Lincoln County Duran Ferguson- Dobyns-Bennett Tyler Gordon- Sevier County Spencer Gulmire- Oak Ridge Brian Hall- Collierville Chris Johnson- Campbell County Marsalous Johnson- Smyrna James Mitchell- Oak Ridge Paul Warner- White Station Brian Wendel- William Blount Lamon Williams- Dobyns-Bennett L.T. Williams- Lincoln County
  17. After watching Reviez in the playoffs last year, he made a true believer out of me. The young man can really hit and runs well to the ball. Does he have the size to be a legit 1A prospect from the LB position?
  18. Are you saying that Jefferson Co. only has 4 starters on offense and 2 starters on defense returning? I know that the Patriots usually reload, but that is a big hit due to graduation. Of course, having Shiverdecker and Reliford back makes for a strong foundation to rebuild!
  19. How much experience does Jefferson Co. have coming back on the O-Line?
  20. Wow JC, it appears you have been studying up on the legendary Paul Bear Bryant during the offseason. That is a smoke screen post that even the Bear would be proud of!
  21. * BUMP* Now that the boards are open again, let's get some input on Region 1 5A
  22. At this stage it is really difficult to make an educated assessment of the Cougars. First of all, what are the other region teams going to bring to the table this year? Of course, Dobyns-Bennett will be pencilled in at the top, but how does the region stack up after the Tribe? Based on last year, I expect Jefferson Co. to be very strong. However, I do not see them rolling over the Cougars like they did last year. Need input from JC4Life to see what the Patriots will have besides Shiverdecker. I have no idea what to expect from Sevier Co. and Science Hill. Not much info on what they will bring at this stage. Bearden and Karns should be competitive, but with the loss of Elders for the Beavs and Bearden in a constant rebuilding mode, I can't see them challenging for a playoff spot. Then again, there is not much info to make a determination. As far as the Cougars go, I expect Coach Dewayne Wells to continue the momentum of the program. Campbell Co. had about 60 players participating in spring drills with more to come in this summer. The offense should be strong behind Sr. RB Chris Johnson and Jr. QB Brance Stiner. Add in 3 experienced players on the O-Line in Sr. Joe Whitaker (also held out of Halls scrimmage), Sr. Matt Goins and 6'5 321 center Brandon Phillips, and the Cougars should move the chains frequently. The biggest challenge offensively is to find a WR to fill the shoes of departed seniors Josh Allen, Billy Davis, Eric Summers and TE/FB Clark Woods. Soph. Corey Chapman may be an answer, but WR is a major concern to be worked on over the summer. Another bright spot for the offense is the emergence of RB Josh Howard. Versus Halls, he exhibited the ability to run tough between the tackles and has promise. I don't know much about this young man, but seeing him in action, I look for major contributions from him. Defense is another story for the Cougars. After posting 5 shutouts last year, DC Coach Wampler has his work cut out for him to even come close to having a strong D. He has alot of talent and athleticism, but they are very young. Of the 3 returning starters, each will be playing a new position. Chris Bowlin and Cody Johnson may anchor the line and both have good size and speed. Jessie Bowman is a force and will play Mike with Josh Evans moving from CB to the LB corps. Travis Leach will be another one to watch. Coach Wampler has proven he can get a D ready. I'll try to get to some summer workouts and learn more about this talented group. With the talent available, look for the Cougars to be strong if the team leadership and chemistry can continue from the foundation of last year.
  23. I was told it was a groin injury - nothing serious, but didn't want to take needless risks in a spring scrimmage.
