1. LaVergne -  Mississippi State, Arkansas State

Siegel went to Univ of Illinois and from what I understand was incredible.

The High School talent in Illinois is incredible thus the camp was better for it.

  2. There is one our middle school goes to every year at Cumberland University in Lebanon. This year it will be Friday, August 19 (afternoon/evening) and all day Saturday, August 20. Lebanon is about an hour west of Cookeville so not really a long trip.

BTW, our middle school is West Wilson MS in Mt Juliet and there is a new coach this year. He might be interested in playing in Cookeville. School starts for them next Wednesday, July 27 so you could call and ask.

SIEGEL HIGH SCHOOL--is having a Middle School Tournament at SHS.

Contact Kathy Slaughter for information. 615-330-9379

  3. Who are they?

    825699453

Brentwood's setter--forget her name is realy good.

After watching Stephanie Cutter play for Siegel last year, I wouldn''t trade her for anyone. She made that team run. She was one of the best all around players last year, and may be the best libero that no one knows about, because she sets, passes, hits and yells alot.

  4. Well, baseball and softball are the biggest spring sports, from what I know.

    825698663

Little inside info here. Having a bus does not mean anything...that responsibility is left up to all the coaches (except football maybe). All you have to do is hire a bus driver or the coach gets a endorsement and then the coach can use the school's bus. I realize that not all schools have buses but most do., as for Lebanon High School I would not be surprised if they did not have athletic buses.

The Volleyabll programs I have been associated with actually fundraise, just to be able to pay a bus driver.

The mid-west is starting to get men's volleyball as well.

  5. Heck yea lets go Bearettes go kick some booty lol

    GO BRADLEY!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the earlier comments, I really hope you do well, but it will be very difficult for you to dominate. You were completly out matched in the SubState last year by Siegel, and they were all Soph and juniors, they had zero upperclassman.

Ootewah's JV could have beaten you last year, and that is nothing to be ashamed of. It was great to see your success last year making it to a Sub State is so hard to do. Untill your girl's play as much as the OHS, ERHS etc. It will be really difficult for you to have consistant success.

Your girls and coaches last year seemed to have class and really wanted it, good luck.

  6. Katie Brush, USJ - MTSU

    Ashley Asberry, Oakland - MTSU

Apparently Asberry has slipped under the radar. I hope someone has seen her in action and can comment. I've never heard the name.

    825690736

Ashley Asberry is an outstanding talent. She is unknown because she didn't play club ball and she broke her leg last year about half way through the season.

She was the best middle blocker that I saw all year. Gigantic hands, freakish vertical and very raw. Before it is all over she will be a dominate force at Middle Tenn.

She is a diamond in the ruff. If she would have played Club she would have been a big time div 1 player...even though she isn't 6 feet tall.

  7. Ok, I called TSSAA and I did not get an answer even close to this.  I was told that coaches could have open GYM but no instructions can take place prior to Aug 1st.  They can go to team camp or individual camps but that is all.

The thing that confuses me is that you always hear TSSAA say "the first day of practice is try outs".

Where did you get your info at Memphis Coach?

    825688121

    Any updates on this memphiscoach??

  8. does anyone know about any camps to go to this summer?(tennessee tech, lipscomb,ut,mtsu, ect.)

    825688813

I have heard Siegel is going to Univ Of Illinois. That should be interesting to see how they stack up against the midwest.

  9. Hmmm.  Curiouser and curiouser.  Trina is out of the office until Friday.  Maybe she can clear this up.  If I am wrong – not to fear…my team hasn’t begun practicing.  We will change our structure completely and abide by the rules.  We will also spread the word to folks on our side of the state.  I honestly can’t tell you the source of my information.  It is the result of many phone calls with various persons within the TSSAA office made both by myself and others in our school.  I know personally of five school athletic programs (multiple sports) that have been operating under the same guidelines, and honestly we all have been acting in good faith.  We will seek to do what’s right.

    825688202

I think that most programs thought that they could start practice on the first day of summer. Otherwise they could not have tryouts. I am not sure if any area teams are practicing or not. But there is no clarity in any of this.

I hope your post is right, just because it makes the most sense.

  10. I thought the way last year's state final was handled was a major injustice. We've talked about this a lot after last season ended. But it's worth noting again.

-Last year's state final was played on a half-court on the main floor of Murphy Center.

As a fan and an official, this was beyond words.

-In previous years, the state final (and final only) was expanded to the full open court of Murphy Center. It was great, because the girls were able make some truly awesome plays in saving balls that were lost on a standard-size court. In a state final, players deserve to get every last shot at saving a ball and playing to their fullest.

There are many arguments about the state tournament. Some dislike MTSU getting all the action. Some don't like driving across the state, though if West TN or East TN got the tourney, the opposite end would moan all the louder. Some are pleased with how things have been handled in recent years, myself included (except for last year).

Moan and groan, whine and complain, and maybe praise and sing about MTSU and the TSSAA (yeah right!)

    825687595

Judge, I was acutally going to start this thread myself but you beat me too it.

I hope and pray that this year is different. It was absolutly embarrasing how the state tournament was ran. I feel sorry for the final 4 teams that did not get to experience what it should really be like. I sat near 4 or 5 division 1 coaches and they indicated that it was the worst tournament they had EVER seen.

There is no reason why a championship game should start at 12:00 PM during the work week. I don't care what MTSU or TSSAA says. If they cannot host it properly then they should not host it.

    "Well Volleyball isn't a revenue sport"--TSSAA

Well I wonder why, until it is taken seriously by TSSAA then it will always be a tournament in which they lose money...for god sake you taped lines down on one end of a basketball court!!

THey need to recognize people at their state tournament...HOF's, Official of the Year, Mental attitude recipients, ALL State...SOMETHING!!!!!! COACH OF THE YEAR maybe??? Not just the coaches that coached in the final game.

If you call yourself a lover of HS Volleyball then you should be embarassed. And until we expect more from TSSAA...it will never get better. If you ever have a chance to go to another states tournament...please do. Illinois, Indinana, Alabama...they do it right.

    Allright I am done.

  11. Ok.  Let's talk about practices during the summer.

First let's define the terms in-season, off-season, and summer.  All carry different rules and regulations as governed by the TSSAA.  These aren't necessarily defined in the TSSAA constitution, but through interpretation of the main TSSAA officers.  Questions can be referred to Brother Bob Baldridge or Trina Melton in the TSSAA office.  Trina is especially good at getting back to inquiries in a rapid manner.  The following is a compilation of the various seasons as interpreted by the TSSAA over the past ten years of my being a coach and athletic director in Tennessee.

In-Season refers to the time from the Monday in the week containing Aug. 1 through the end of the State tournament.  There are no practice limitations in time or scope, practice can be mandatory, teams can scrimmage after a certain number of practices, and then play after the date set by the TSSAA calendar.

Off-season refers to the time immediately following the elimination of a team from competition until the end of school.  Coaches can design and implement a NON-MANDATORY lifting and conditioning program for their athletes AND can open up their gyms for NON-MANDATORY, self regulated open gyms.  The coaches cannot give any skill specific instruction, nor can they set up a schedule of drills to complete.  In essence, coaches may open a gym, turn on lights, set up a net, and watch.  There cannot be any tryouts during the Off-season.

Summer refers to the time immediately after the last final exam/class offered by a school until the Monday in the week containing Aug. 1.  The following rules apply during the whole of the summer period with the exception of the dead weeks.  During summer time, coaches can have tryouts, compete in scrimmages, attend camps, and conduct full-blown practices.  These practices can contain skill directed instruction.  These practices can be designed and implemented by a coach.  The key is that practices cannot be in any way shape or form mandatory.  You cannot require athletes to attend practice.  You cannot require athletes to attend camps.  You cannot provide any sort of punishment or consequence for missing practice or camp.

It is vital that we all have an understanding of the various seasons, and the limitations inherent within each.  It truly helps avoid the finger pointing and accusations that occur when people have varying interpretations of the rules.  Questions?  Comments?  Rude remarks?

    825687359

Ok, I called TSSAA and I did not get an answer even close to this. I was told that coaches could have open GYM but no instructions can take place prior to Aug 1st. They can go to team camp or individual camps but that is all.

The thing that confuses me is that you always hear TSSAA say "the first day of practice is try outs".

Where did you get your info at Memphis Coach?

  12. I won't argue with you too much, but I didn't think "official" practice wasn't kosher til the beginning of August.

    825686029

Correct me if I am wrong, but you can practice, have try outs etc, but you cannot scrimmage any teams. I am not sure why they mark the official practice start in AUg.

Also, does anyone know why Volleyball does not get a "fall" practice. Football, basketball, baseball etc. all get to coach their kids in the off season.

Baseball coaches can coach them all summer

    Football gets spring practice

i am not sure exactly on basketball but I am pretty sure they can.

  13. It is good to be back!

Official Practice can start this week. It is Volleyball season.

    Brentwood

Brentwood and Brentwood....all have a chance.

As well as the usual suspects from last years tournament...which was very young.

G-town & Siegel will be good again.

Franklin has "the middle" that can dominate. But who will set?

  14. that talk is over that was like last week and who are you

    825670894

Don't worry about who I am you need to worry about how big of an idiot you sound like, whining on coachT. If want to play baseball- then play...don't whine and don't cut down a kid that doesnt deserve it. When you point your finger at someone else you will have 10 coming back at you.

  15. They actually did say something to them about the getting lucky comment....so there goes that arguement  thumb

    825670861

Dodrill is the best defensive catcher in the county...no contest.

great work ethic, good ability and good coaching.

Dusty, quit your whining you sound like a girl who didn't win prom queen and now she is bitter. Coaches don't cut talent, unless there is a bigger issue then that.

  16. I have witnessed a couple spectators being removed from the gym because of being a distraction. Cheering while play is going on isnt wrong, but when the girl is serving...I am suprised the ref didnt take control.

    825351026

I see your point Mav, but I think there is a big differnce between poor sportsmanship and an uninformed crowd. For Top to say that it was the worse example he/she has ever seen is a little overboard. The crowd was not out of control at all. Did they yell during the serve yes, would they have stopped if the ref would have asked? yes. It was not poor sportsmanship, but the 1st time that half those kids have ever watched volleyball. Both coach's, teams and parents win and lose with class (for the most part). It was a good environment for HS volleyball...as far as the ref, he likes to avoid conflict at all costs. That's all I got on this topic. :P

  17. During the Riverdale / Siegel game last night at Siegel the Siegel students started screeching at the top of thier lungs every time the Riverdale team served or set up to hit to try to mess them up. This action went on for two games. I will say it wasnt all of them just a group of ten to twelve.  It was the rudest behavior I have ever witnessed at a high school game.

Good job Riverdale girls for getting beyond it, and defeating Siegel anyway in just three games.

    825350891

This may be the most ridiculous posting I have ever seen. I think yelling during a serve would not be considered rude behavior...so yelling during a free throw would also be considered bad behavior I guess. I guess you didn't hear your student section (5 or 6 kids) when Siegel played you at your place......relax buddy, you need to reevaluate what "the rudest behavior you have ever seen"

The siegel kids did not yell at any individual players or single out 1 person, and I can't say that didn't happen at RHS, this isn't golf or tennis...it's volleyball. That is called home court.

Be happy with your girls effort and the win, your girls deserve every bit of it.

  18. Siegel played well but Riverdale was determined they defeated Siegel in only three games. The last game wasnt even close. Their hitting was powerful and they worked together like a fine tuned machine. It was amazing to watch.

    825350890

Topgame I couldn't agree with you more. RHS looked great. They looked like the team the district thought they would be a month ago. Siegel was not ready to play and don't think for a second that siegel was over confident..cause they were not. That is how well RHS played. I am very impressed with them, no doubt one of the most impressive wins I've seen. Kudos to RHS, they pretty much locked up the #1 seed. It will be very interesting to see how Siegel reacts, casue they were completly dominated. No team has made Siegel look bad this year and Riverdale did.

  19. I disagree. Riverdale looks really, really good.

    825349275

Have you seen RHS play latly??

Siegel beat them at Riverdale but I really think this will be a great match.

I really think Siegel will win but It will take 5 games.
