  1. I also noticed 2 Freshman made the team - Nicklin Hames from Webb and Meredith Bonee from Catholic. I remember Hames making the team last year, but was surprised that Freshman were honored. Both of these were well deserved, but Were there any others???

  2. After watching part of this year's TSSAA state volleyball tourney, I have some questions. Maybe they have been asked on this sight before, but I've missed them.

    1. Why plan a state volleyball tourney on a Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday? The kids miss 3 days of school, the crowds and revenue are small, concessions revenue is light, logistics are more complicated with MTSU and Blackman

    2. How do they pick the referees? I only saw one from the Knoxville area and one from the Kingsport area. Of course, doing this tourney on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday also limits what refs can participate. Saw some very good referees, but saw some really strange things too. Rotating refs at MTSU, and the same Ref calling up 3 or 4 matches in a row at Blackman. Strange calls applied to one team, yet not applied across the board.

    3. Why pick just an MVP vs. an all tournament team?? Didn't they used to pick 6-12 players for an all tournament team?

    4. Why the change in format from pools of four teams to start then a bracket to a double elimination bracket?? How did they seed the teams?

    5. Why the sub-state structure?? Why not let 16 teams make it to state vs. just 8?? Wouldn't this generate more revenue and more concessions??

Just Curious. Have been to Big South, SRVA Regionals, Hi Neighbor, etc. -- and was kind of disappointed with what I saw this past week in Murfreesboro.

  3. Tryouts have been set for the Phoenix Rising Volleyball Club and begin this weekend.

PRVC is expanding again this year and plans to offer an additional 12's team, is adding an 18 team, and hopes to have enough interest to start offering boys teams.

A satellite location in Morristown is also planned for 15 and 16 girls.

For more information go to http://www.phoenixrisingvb.net

You can also contact Club Director Kynette Williams at mhp07@bellsouth.net or 865-548-7226 or Asst. Director Pam Bonee at PamBonee@comcast.net or 865-947-2228

  4. I vote that we keep them. The game is so much faster than it used to be that it is almost impossible for one person to follow everything and do a good job, and linesmen are unpredictable. I don't think, however, an R2 should be paid the same as an up official.

As a former ref, "calling down" is a piece of cake -- as compared to the job of the R1. But serving as an R2 is a great training ground for new officials. When I started out calling volleyball, I would have loved to have had a few weeks under the direction of an experienced official.

I vote you keep them, but pay an R2 $10 or $20 less per match.

  5. There is a volunteer working with the team -- Linda Stooksbury Severs. Yes, she was a middle for Anderson County in the 80's and then went on to play at Tennessee Tech after high school.

So, I think she is much older than the current ORHS and ACHS coaches.

The two Karns players you are asking about are actually the Bonee twins and their mother played at UT. I believe she and Severs both played under Rita Hackler -- the first Norris High and Anderson County coach -- who is credited with laying the foundation for the volleyball program in Anderson County. You see a lot of great players and coaches coming out of that end of Anderson County.

  6. Orcat,

Agree with your top 6, but think you are underestimating KARNS. Didn't Karns beat OR earlier in the year????

I've seen them play a couple of times this season, and I'm seeing a whole lot more than just one middle. I'm seeing TWO middles, some small outsides that play smart and move to the ball well, strong setter, and an impressive libero. I'm seeing a pretty balanced team.

One of the keys for the next few weeks for all of these teams may very well be who can stay the healthiest! All of these teams have struggled with the flu, strep, and some other viruses.

  7. Why is it that high school volleyball matches start at 4:30 in the afternoon?

Don't coaches realize that they can't build a following, have any amount of tickets sales, or even get the schools' students to attend games if they start so early??

I tried to attend some East Tennessee matches this week, but the matches started before I got off work. From talking to parents of players, they are upset that their kids are pulled out of their classes time and time again, and that they are having to miss work repeatedly to even watch their kids play.

Don't most schools get out at 3:30?

When I did walk into the gym on Tuesday night -- hardly anybody was there.

Nobody would dream of starting a football game so early or a basketball game?

How hard is it on these volleyball players to repeatedly miss their afternoon classes so that they can travel to their matches, change clothes, possibly grab a bite to eat, and warm up before they play??

What are the start times in your area? What are these coaches possibly thinking? Does TSSAA have input into the start times or is it left up to the schools or districts?

  8. Actually, in the early 80's under Coach Bob Bertucci they had 3, and later 4, Tennesseans on the UT Lady Vols roster. Cousins Kim and Pam Hackler signed out of Norris High School (what is now Anderson County); and Beverly Garner, out of East Ridge High School in Chattanooga; were all in the same class. A year later they added Pam McMahan out of Doyle High School (what is now South Doyle).

That team won the SEC that year.

Two of those players, Pam Hackler and Beverly Garner, have children playing high school volleyball right now at Karns High in Knoxville and Ooltewah High.

  9. I'm confused -- I thought the big middle out of Karns that everybody has been talking about was named Handel??

According to the News Sentinel article, one of the better performances for Karns this week came from one of the Bonee kids.
