  1. Goins' accomplishments look good on paper, but that first team all-region is misleading given that the Offensive Player of the Year was a quarterback and was not in contention for all region teams. I can't say that I was pleased with the quarterback play last year, all-region or not. In years past, with guys like Cory Watson, Dawson Halliday, Zach Long, and Jamie Crawford in the conference, Goins would not have even sniffed the all-region team. Call it what you will, but that much is very clear. His best game to date occurred during his sophomore year. He certainly has some tools to work with, but we haven't seen much improvement to date, which makes me wonder if we have a capable quarterback coach. I'm not as in touch as I used to be, and I only know what I see from the stands or hear from others, so I'm not sure who handles the quarterbacks. As for athletes capable of playing college ball, Ausmus and Mason are the two that stick out in my mind. Unfortunately, I hear Mason doesn't quite have it together off the field but, both, from a talent standpoint, could without a doubt play somewhere. Like it was said before me, it takes a combination of talent and work ethic that I don't see out of anyone else on the team. Kids simply aren't as driven as they were back in my time. I remember we'd have guys who lived in that weight room and others who were just "country strong". Either way we understood what hard work meant and weren't afraid of it.
  2. Agree to disagree on Goins then. He's a heck on an athlete, don't get me wrong, just not much of a football player in my opinion. His speed is pretty decent but he doesn't make quick or good decisions, and unfortunately he doesn't do the other things (footwork, mechanics, throw a consistent ball) well enough like, say, a Zach Long did, to compensate for this. They'd be better off giving the Bible kid a shot and using Goins elsewhere in my opinion. He is in a similar mold as Long, and that's as effectively as we've seen the veer run since Gut has been at the helm. As far as college prospects, a guy I work with told me today that Coach Anderson told the team it has multiple division 1 prospects. I understand encouragement, but delusion to that extent is somewhat concerning. I think we've got some solid athletes, but from watching last year it's clear to anyone with an eye for talent that we don't have any D1 guys. That said, I would love to see a few guys find a good fit somewhere and make a name for both themselves and the Patriots like Brooks has done in Chattanooga.
  3. It's about time for spring ball to start up, so I reckon we might as well get the talk started. What are we looking like this year? Not much lost from last year, but unless something changes we are still weak at the quarterback position and a few others. Goins is a good athlete, but he's the worst QB we've had post-millennium. Does Wright return in the backfield? Lots of athletes, just got to make sure they are in the right positions. Any college prospect on the team this year?
  4. Fact is Lamar Brown knows exactly what JC is about to do on the offensive side of the ball every time they line up. The line got dominated but Lamar Brown vs. Justin Anderson is a complete and total mismatch. I think that's clear.
  5. Right, like Devan Allen and Jesse Kraus. Oh wait...
  6. Wow JCSP20, that is real supportive of the team. Way to go!!!! Just being realistic. No point in trying to talk myself into being confident.
  7. Then is the issue the Athletic Director. Yes??????? No??????? Indeed, good sir. Good guy, poor AD. Simply not true. There is a lot of good talent on that team- don't get me wrong- but to say that there are "5 or 6" potential division 1 players on this team is simply inaccurate. Several guys have the opportunity to play at the collegiate level, none of them D1. As far as the issue I touched on earlier regarding telling people what they want to hear goes, I can only speak as to what my few contacts close to the program tell me. I can say that in more than one instance this has been brought to my attention. So, while it may not be apparent to everyone (I'm not saying the coach goes around lying to everyone he comes in contact with), it certainly is an issue and doesn't go unnoticed in within the walls of that locker room. Take it for what it's worth.
  8. Interesting matchup, but I just can't see the boys from JC winning against a formidable opponent with the offense in it's current state. Lot of guys out of position, athletes being underused, and a quarterback who lacks an understanding of how to play the position. It's frustrating to watch. I hate that I have to work Friday and will be missing the game, but I've got an old buddy prepared to give me updates thoughout. Go Blue!
  9. I'll take DB in this one. Lot of speed on the field for Sevier County, but gotta go with the Tribe.
  10. I can tell you that the lying to the players is more of an issue than you might think. Coach Anderson has an issue with telling people- players, coaches, fans, whomever- exactly what they want to hear, whether it's true or not. If you think the players don't notice this, you are mistaken. Problems at JCHS start at the top.
