  1. I hate blaming refs - if you’re good enough, bad calls won’t lose the game for you. There’s been a lot of speculation on the on-side kick, so here is the video footage so you can judge for yourself. There are dozens of missed blocks, dropped passes, poor tackles and missed coverages that cause a team to lose a game. This play didn’t lose the game for the Bees whether it was the right or wrong call - just wanted everyone to be able to see it for themselves since it’s the topic of so much conversation today On Side Kick
  2. Alcoa appeared to have a player suffer a substantial arm injury last night. Prayers for him if he did and for any of their families who may have been in the wreck after game on 56. The Bees will definitely be there cheering for you on Saturday at 3.
  3. Great game for the Tornadoes. I’m sure you’ll be bringing home number 17 next weekend. Glad we kept the game at the Hive because our seniors deserved to play one last game on their home field with their home crowd. We play a lot of teams every year and I want to thank you for being great and respectful fans. Have a safe trip back to East Tennessee and we will be there cheering for you at Tech next week. My son’s a junior, so hoping we get far enough to meet you in Alcoa next year. Nobody was giving our kids a shot before the game - a lot didn’t even think we’d score. We are going home with a loss tonight, but I wouldn’t be any prouder of that group of kids if they’d won by three touchdowns. When a group of country boys from Baxter step on the field with Alcoa and give it all every play all night long, they have earned my respect. I had two kids on the 2013 team - great group who’ve done well in life since leaving Upperman. I am sure these seniors will do the same.
  4. Agreed - it could be an advantage - around 3,500 possible kids to pull from county-wide. You'd think some of the 75 kids on Ckvl's freshmen team would want to change to a program where they could get actual playing time before they're juniors or seniors, but it doesn't happen often. That may be because Upperman didn't have a region championship between 1996 and 2013 and had almost all losing seasons - nobody wants to move to a program that isn't successful. That may change some with the 2013, 2015 and 2018 region titles coming to Baxter. The girls' basketball program is drawing some interest from the middle school players in Cookeville since they got their back to back gold balls. We know families from Putnam County who have moved their kids to Knoxville to play in Maryville/Alcoa. Everyone wants to come be a part of a program with a winning tradition where their kid can get better and get visibility if he's good.
  5. It doesn't work that way around here. Technically, you can go to either of the three high schools, but roots run deep. Most in Cookeville would die before they let one of their kids go to school in Baxter or Monterey, and the same is true about kids moving to Cookeville. You go where yo' mama raised ya'. We do tend to show up and support the others when it's time. Monterey made it to semis a couple years ago and everyone in Baxter was there cheering for them, but I don't recall over a dozen transfers in either direction in the twenty years I've been around - yeah, I'm older than dirt. Houses going up everywhere though if you decide you want to live closer to Ralph's.
  6. No - season passes but on reserved seating. They do sell reserved parking.
  7. There’s no one in Baxter that wouldn’t welcome you to come over and sit right beside them. We may not cheer for the same team but we are always hospitable. Don’t worry though - we didn’t have the cow pile bingo fundraiser this year, so there won’t be cow crap to wade through to get to the stands - and we have the goats and pigs fenced up over by the Ag building.
  8. High schools in Putnam County aren’t “hard-zoned” and kids can attend Monterey, Cookeville or Upperman. However, you do have to live in Putnam County. There isn’t a tuition option to attend school in Putnam County if you don’t live there and if you need transportation, you have to attend the school you are zoned to attend. I don’t think that’s the reason they don’t have a state championship though. CHS has to be one of the largest 6A schools in the state.
  9. Totally agree. I’m sure the TSSAA looks more closely at their rosters than anyone’s. Success breeds success. Kids in towns with championship programs grow up working and wanting to be a part of it. The next generation of champions are being trained in the pee-wee youth programs there now. You can’t argue with success. You try to recognize it and replicate it in your own program.
  10. The Whistle Stop Pizzeria in down town Baxter has great food.
  11. We will make sure to have you some butter twists in concessions. Just ask whoever is working.
  12. Well, we’d love to have turf instead If you have any spare change up your way. It was really wet and muddy the last two weeks. My kid looked like he’d been in a mud bath. Hoping the dryer weather forecast for later this week will help. Didn’t see a lot of kids slipping and falling on pass routes or runs though.
  13. The bad part of that is the gate split. 50% for TSSAA and 25% for each team. Upperman hosted Louden and they didn't even bring one fan per player - doubt that there were many more in the stands than were on the pass list. York brought a huge crowd for the regular season game, but only about half of that for the Round 2 playoff game - possibly due to the weather. Home stands have been packed for both games. Hoping Red Bank travels better this week, but I've heard they don't. Hope we can beat them and host Alcoa in the semis - no doubt they will bring a crowd to Baxter.
  14. There was that one year that one of the teams' bus drivers was arrested for DUI when he arrived at the Blue Cross Bowl....
