Baylor 2. CBHS 3. Father Ryan 4. McCallie Outstanding Wrestler: Parker Petersen - Has had one of the most dominating seasons in recent memory - all but 1 match ended in a fall (11-3 major) - suspect he will have 3 1st period falls in route to title Best Match: Finals Match at 220 - top 3 guys have all gone into overtime with each other *The chance to see a 5-Timer and a 4-Timer in the finals is pretty incredible and extremely rare. Good luck to Alex and Emory * At least SEVEN high level Division I athletes (wrestling and football). I'm sure I didn't get them all but this is something fun to watch. If an athlete wonders what it takes to be a DI athlete, watch the kids listed above because they ALL did it through hard work and dedication.
  2. Wells beat Billingsly in UTB at West Region. Probably the best match I watched at that tournament. Wells was aggressor and had multiple chaces to win in regulation and SV. I allso watched Fisher vs. Billingsly at State Duals and it wasn't near the match. I think that Wells is in the best shape and the best wrestler of the 3. I disagree with Taylor, there are only 3 wrestlers that have a shot at 220. I do think it is the most intriguing weight in the tournament.
  3. I agree Corday is a great wrestler. The reality is, the lightest weights have younger, less developed kids. Also, very few of those kids would be big time college recruits because they aren’t big enough yet. There are several great 106/113 kids that develop into outstanding 120/126 pounders but many don’t. In my opinion, kids that prove themselves across multiple weight classes get my vote over a nationally ranked 106/113 pounder. Also, anyone who proves themselves in the meat grinder weight classes (126-160) gets my pick over 106/113. Finally, multi-sport athletes that are successful on National stage get my vote over the light kids. You have to admit, if Corday (or ANY ranked 106/113) wants to wrestle D1 he has to be successful at 120/126 down the road. Again, there is no right answer....this is all just to stir up interest before my favorite high school sporting event.
  4. I agree that DII is very strong this year!! I missed Dendy’s Super32 placement. He is great but finished 4th at Regional tournament last month. Corday is solid at 106/113 but he’s 106/113. Let’s see how he does when he gets bigger. Flo Rankings are a mess right now. They even admit that. Especially at the upper weights because they have no recent National competition to go off of. Huge number of football guys that didn’t participate at Super32 or duals in Georgia. I love this kind of discussion around wrestling in Tennessee. I can’t wait to watch all these guys at state.
  5. This is a great list! I am surprised this hasn't gained a little more traction. I look at this list and try to determine who doesn't just dominate Tennessee but has legitimate ability to place at tournaments like Ironman, Super 32, etc. 1) Whitworth - 4th at Super 32 - absolutely dominant in Tennessee - 5-Timer - If you are a fan of wrestling - this guy is the prototypical get the job done wrestler. He is great from every position 2) Roller - 6th at Super 32 - may be best overall "wrestler" in Tennessee - very solid National Level wins. He is fun to watch 3) Harper - ranked high at 195 and has matured at that weight. Wrestled Rocky Elam as well as anyone last year - will be a 4-timer 4) Petersen - the way he looks at HWT this year - he is in Top 5 HWTs in the country - very few 6'5" 250+ athletic HWTs that know how to wrestle 5) Cagle - has some high quality National wins and placed at NHSCA. tough weight though * Obviously Howard would be in there if healthy ** These other guys are good but get shown up on National level ** Let's face it, Tennessee doesn't have the quality depth needed to create great National level wrestlers *** In DII there are only a handful wrestlers that should be in the discussion. Looking at Tennessee State titles doesn't automatically put you on the list
  6. Christian Academy of Knoxville has been a huge surprise this year. They have a new coach in Jamie Petrik that has taken a team that was a laughing stock last year and turned them into a contender. They split with Farragut, Bearden and William Blount and crushed Catholic. They are a super young team. They have an 8th grade Libero Taylor Call who seems to be getting better. Their starting setter, Lauren Peterson, is also an 8th grader, is undoubtedly all-state caliber. Look for this kid to be big time Division I prospect in years to come. They also have freshman Maggie Morgan who is tremendous middle and outside. Sophomore Holly Staab is back from early season injury and playing well. This looks to be a team that will dominate east Tennessee high school volleyball for years to come. Say what you want about Karns and Anderson County, it looks like CAK will be bringing home a few state championships in years to come.
