  2. They could twist an ankle walking down the sidewalk which is unavoidable. They can avoid a twisted ankle by not playing in that pick up basketball game on the playground. So it’s six of one and half dozen of the other. Could the gym teacher fail a great athlete because he isn’t participating? Probably. Would he/she do it? That’s a whole other animal. Something else to consider but not as common is skin funk. When the official season begins I don’t want my athletes around anybody else because a case of ringworm unnoticed can infect a number of kids. If it’s on the scalp they cannot have contact for 14 days. In fact, they don’t even have to touch each other, it can be spread by the object they are sharing which could include a ball, bat or the sharing of a sweaty towel. Ringworm is not as big a deal in a lot of sports but in wrestling with the amount of skin to skin contact it can be devastating to a program. Not to mention the havoc it wreaks in your home when that nasty sweaty towel lands in the same laundry basket with your skivies.
  3. What does it mean “to share” the athlete. Does it mean while one team is in season and the other is not? Or, does it mean two different teams at the same time? Regardless the situation as a coach I will give you my perspective. When you are ‘in season’ you do not want to share your athlete for fear your athlete will get hurt doing something else and then you no longer have that athlete. This one athlete could make the difference between the team making the playoffs and not. For that matter you don’t want that athlete to even participate in gym class or lift weights on the day of a match. It sounds a little selfish but I have seen so many kids over the years get hurt and then cannot compete. Once your teams season is completed regardless of the reason you can no longer hold that athlete and they should be free to do whatever. In addition, I tell my athletes playing fall sports that as soon as the summer dead period is completed they can no longer work out with us because their obligation is to fall sports. Until then they are free to do as they choose. I go to camp in June and I take football/track/cross country/whatever sport kids with me. Once our season is completed (mid Feb) my kids are free to move on to the next sport if they choose to or they are welcome to start back in the weight room with us and those who do not play spring sports. Once fall sports are completed I allow the kids to take a few days off to decompress and then they are expected in the room. If the fall sport makes the playoffs I wait longer. As a wrestling coach I could find myself waiting until mid November for kids if football goes deep into the playoffs. I will wait for them. Beech is a perfect example of this. On the other hand if a coach tells an athlete they cannot play another sport outside his season and uses the threat of not playing them then I say that Coach is selfish and he hurts himself. Is that Coach gonna hold out a great athlete the next season because that kids wants to play another sport? I think not especially if that kid is a stand out player. I am a firm believer in cross training athletes and I believe that certain sports do compliment each other. An example is football and wrestling. I get beat up every time I say it but it’s true and nobody can give me a valid reason why it isn’t outside of silly and sometimes outright stupid remarks. I have wrestlers running track and playing soccer right now. I also have wrestlers working out with football. They aren’t learning wrestling but they are developing skills like foot speed and agility and a football tackle looks very similar to a double leg takedown. For that matter every time the ball is snapped there are several 5-10 second wrestling matches taking place on the line of scrimmage. There are some very special kids out there and they are good at whatever they do. If they choose one sport only then let them. If they want to try other things let them do that as well. A great athlete will compliment any team and why hold them and that team back? Just be reasonable, after all we are teaching them more than a sport.

  5. I understand the rules. I also have witnessed a numbers of boys running before weigh ins at every state tournament the past dozen years. I would assume this rule is overlooked for several reasons. Example. My scale is different than yours. You weigh all week on your scale and then come to me and you miss weight. Is that your fault or the fault of the scale? Scales are never consistent, even at state. So, if you show up at my school and you were on weight at your school but 2/10 over on mine because our scales are different should you have an opportunity to run a little before official weigh in? Any Coach will tell you how frustrating it is to pre weigh at your school, travel to another school and be heavy. Fortunately every Coach I have dealt with over the years has had the same attitude about it. Now if you have one of those scales that keeps you lighter than others you don’t usually have an issue. My scale is different than yours. Scale inconsistency. While weighing in your team at an event and someone weighs slightly lower than their descent weight it registers in red on the next weigh sheet. We all know this slightly lower weight does not qualify the wrestler for a lower weight class because they are bound by their descent. Should the wrestler be penalized for being slightly lower than his/her descent target weight? They are not because of scale inconsistencies. My scale is different than yours. Some families have a home scale. They are told to check their weight after practice and then check when they get home and compare the difference. This is a good tool for monitoring ones weight as the season progresses. Should everyone bring their own scale to state and have in their hotel? I think it’s a great practice but not always practical. For A/AA Nobody was permitted in the building the night before to check a scale. The following morning they were given 30 minutes from the doors opening to weigh in. It was a little chaotic. Everyone did a great job considering. DAKEKO, I know you guys had your hands full and it was not the most ideal situation. I assume you are an official. Im not sure how D2 and the girls did their weigh in the next day but I did see a number of them walking around the facility during the A/AA tournament and what was the chance they had access to those scales, the night before their weigh in? In my original comment I was suggesting that these limitations may have led to the larger than normal number of missed weights. I do not believe a kid should be wearing sauna suits and garbage bags while running. I don’t condone nor permit it. I am not a fan of ‘’cutting’’ weight. I am not a fan of diuretics as a means of dropping weight. Personally, because our scales are different I feel a bit of leeway should be permitted and within reason, such as an early weight check. If the second and third sessions were permitted access to the scales the day before their event then the same opportunity should have been provided. In closing, if a kid doesn’t not take his weigh in seriously that is on him/her.
  6. I’m not gonna make excuses for kids missing weight, one of the 14 was one of mine. I’m also not gonna claim that all 14 missed weight because I don’t know if that is the case. What I will say is 30 minutes between doors opening and the beginning of weigh in doesn’t leave a kid much time to run off the extra if he’s heavy. Seems like years past you could see kids running before weigh ins. This year there wasnt much time or room to run and the weigh ins seemed rushed. Maybe an hour between would be better suited for the ones without access to a scale. Otherwise I believe the TSSAA did a good job considering what they were up against. I was not present for the other sessions so I don’t know if they experienced the same thing. Anyone have input
  7. I’m curious and I’m not trying to start a fight. Does this same logic apply to collegiate wrestling? Should they do away with D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO and club wrestling so that D1 isn’t watered down?

  10. Do you think they may be doing this because they anticipate the covid excuse could be around for the next few seasons? A question one might ask is, will all other sports be effected in the same manner?
  11. Sycamore will be attempting to host an invitational again for Jan 15 2022. Last year covid turned it into a dual and then covid shut it down completely. We will host up to 20 teams on a 16 man bracket. Top 3 teams receive plaques. Top 4 wrestlers medal. Best match.   18. Tssaa had nothing to do with it. The coaches vote MOW and officials vote best match.
  19. Does anyone know who won best match in all divisions and who was MOW? Thanks
  20. I was told Riley Bennett got OW. I don’t know how accurate that is. Not sure about best match.
