Don’t agree with UC being #6 because they lost to Div 2 III Ensworth but it will work for now. Riverside lost last week also and they are #1 in 2A poll.

Because Union City was probably around #6 to begin the season (I'll be honest with you, I don't know where Union City was ranked to begin the season). Both teams were expected to lose their games. I don't think Union City was punished for losing to Ensworth. They, UC,  just have to earn their way up to the top of the leaderboard. Luckily for Union City, they'll play a USJ that maybe down to their standards, an average Dyer County team, and three straight opponents where Union City will be heavily favored to win.

  2. Both teams got beat last night. Both teams were expected to get beat last night. I was more surprised with MASE losing by that much, but don't know if they had Brown or not. No one should be surprised that Ensworth beating Union City 40-6.

  3. Milan football: It's home of Johnnie Hall Stadium, but it's also home of Bill Murray press box (I think), it's also home of someone's field (check the scoreboard tomorrow night), and it's home of Tucker's field House. Hey, @BIGPURPLEMACHINEwhen is your name going on something? lol

This game is as good as advertise. I stated in a thread few weeks ago, four of the five last SGC/Milan football games have resulted in one possession or less. Only year it was not a one possession game was the covid year in 2020. Chances are you'll watch a good game. I do like South Gibson to come out on top. If they can get everything going offensively, they'll be tough to stop.

  4. Brighton is kind of weird to me. I saw them a few years ago and they have the ability to light up the scoreboard. They can spread out and score. However, they allowed a lot of points as well. Two years ago, they scored 70 points and 50 points in a game. Last year, their offense just dropped unless they're playing a bad team. Defense, was the same. They allowed a lot of points.

However, they're going to be on their third head coach in three years. Y'alls guy, Morgan Cruce took a pit stop, left Brighton and moved again, which isn't surprising to anyone.

Henry County will win the game pretty easily. Brighton has to find some sort of consistency from an organizational standpoint. It's not their fault Cruce left. I actually thought that was a good hire, but the immediately results didn't happen.

Glancing through the recent years over at Brighton: In 2022, they scored over 38+ points in 7 of their 10 games. Last year under Cruce, they scored over 38 in 3 of their 10 games, and scored 14 or less in 6 of their 10 games.

Henry County will be fine! They'll win this game around 42-14 type. Restaurant recommendation: Livingston's in Brownsville. Hopefully, @stacmot will help you out on that!

Yes they did but don't think Pure Academy, whoever they are,Memphis Business,Obion Central or Dyer Co will beat them

Won't be surprised if PURE Academy does beat Haywood. Last year, PURE did lose to MUS. However, they were tied at 7 at the end of the first half.

PURE Academy has an all road schedule. No home games for them. They have the toughest schedule in the state. Teams included: Haywood, Cookeville, Hardin County, Pearl-Cohn, Blackman, Walker Valley, a team from Missouri, and two teams from Mississippi. No team from Memphis is going to travel to north of Chattanooga in Cleveland to play, and get beat by 50.

Fair. At least Northside will not look like a complete joke on the field. I went to the SGC v Northside game last year and I honestly felt sorry for the kids. It was pathetic.

And that's what I'm saying regarding to this year. There's no way North Side will be that bad again. They have a better coach and they have the players to go make plays. It'll be refreshing to them. It was a joke, but that team never had any "organizational" structure under Powell. They're going to be fine, but they have a long way to go to compete with South Gibson and Hardin County.

What's going to suck for this team is they're going to play Lexington, Hardin County, and Dyersburgh 3 weeks in a row in the middle stretch of September. They may go 0-3 in those game. However, if the players keep developing throughout the season, then they maybe able to win one of those games if the LHS, HCHS, and DHS were in the last 3 weeks of the season.

They maybe like Peabody 2.0 in a way. Riverside is fortunate to see Peabody on September 1st, while Huntingdon is not fortunate because they have Peabody on October 27. That 50ish days where the players can still develop throughout the season and will be better in late October. That's if the players are still healthy and developing throughout the season.

Another thing to think about is that Huntingdung got donkey stomped by Covington 5-1 a couple of weeks ago and last night UC beat that same Covington in a 2 qtr scrimmage.

I get that, but I carry little to no weight when it comes to the "scores" of scrimmages. Just my personal opinion. Some teams take scrimmages more serious than others. Some teams will only run certain plays. Some teams have a "pitch count" for players. Some teams may have a "checklist" of things to accomplish, and if they are able to check things off, then they're content for that night.

I'm not hating on teams for winning and pumping their chest on scrimmages. But 3/4A teams are in a "darn if you do, and darn if you don't scenario."

If Covington "won" that scrimmage against Union City, no one would care. They're expecting to win that scrimmage. Since, Union City won, then here we are reacting to it. What does Covington have to gain if they won that scrimmage? To me, nothing.

When Lowe was at Bolivar he took a horrible program and turned them into a contender, quickly. He did not have major success but they were certainly miles ahead of where they were and where they are now. My only bone with Lowe is that he never seems to stay anywhere long... Wish the Indians the best. I was tickled to hear they hired him.

And that's the reason why I'm not sold on him. Now, he was at Bolivar and Fayette Ware as a head coach. He was an assistant at Lausanne sandwich in between the two. I will say neither Bolivar and Fayette Ware support their athletic programs. Not saying JMCSS does either, but who knows what will happen. At least North Side has been proven to have some success, just need the consistency. My only concern is his drive to and from work is a long drive. I hope that doesn't take a toll on his health.

Union City had a TON of injuries at the end of the season last year. Was missing several key contributors. But honestly in my mind after the first 3 it’s a crap shoot where the teams will end up. I have seen D’Burg up close and personal. They are impressive. Riverside and HC are loaded as well. Everyone else is a mystery at this point.

Understand! Thank you for doing this!

    1. Henry Co. (5A)- the scrimmage win over MBA speaks volumes to me. Probably the toughest schedule of any team in West TN.

    2. Riverside (2A)- Has looked impressive in the preseason and brings back the house after coming off a silver ball season.

    3. Dyersburg (3A)- HUGE senior class of 25 players. Has outscored Lexington, Milan and Crockett 85-0 in the preseason.

    4. Haywood (4A)-  Don’t know how to feel about Haywood as they have struggled in the preseason but they have been absolutely dominant the last few years. Until someone in West TN can beat them in a meaningful game they will be ranked high.

    5. Munford (5A)-  Lots of weapons returning off an 11-1 team from a year ago. Lots of kids getting offers. Maybe over hyped but we will find out soon enough.

    6.  Union City (1A)-  tornadoes return a lot of experience from last year and are one of the favorites in 1A. Looked great last night beating Covington in jamboree action.

    7. South Gibson (4A)-  Hornets also with a big senior class and tons of experience. Put a beat down on Peabody last nigh.

    8.  Covington (3A)- Always a consistent program. They looked really good against Huntingdung a couple of weeks ago winning 5-1 in varsity action.

    9. Huntingdung (2A)-  Brings back a ton of starters from last years team that split with Riverside. They are a favorite in 2A to go to Chattanooga.

T10. USJ (D2-AA)-  Looked great in a 10-7 jamboree win over Milan last night. Are one of the most consistent teams in West TN every year.

T10. Hardin Co. (4A)-  have one of the top qb’s in the state. Hardin Co. will have a tough offense to stop and will battle Sout Gibson for the top spot in 6-4A.

Outside Looking In- McKenzie, Dresden, Crockett, Milan, JCS and Westview

    Let the discussion begin!!!

The weird thing I've noticed regarding to preseason games is that fans care about the "score" more than the players and coaches do.

I know we'll disagree, but to me, Riverside is #1. Where I am confused is why is Union City at #6 and Huntingdon at #9? Did y'all watch them in the playoffs? They scored 13 points in their final two games. They also lost to Huntingdon to end their season. Kind of confused as to why they are going to jump Huntingdon for some reason.

I will say Union City has a better shot to reach Chattanooga over Huntingdon, but that's only because 2A is way better than 1A in West Tennessee.

Y’all always have some great athlete’s at North Side . Sounds like Lowe is putting them in situations to excel. The last coach did not do that IMO. Seen it first hand. Maybe with better coaching you will also see some guys playing football that otherwise would not even play. Good luck on your season. 6-4A will be a lot more interesting with NS and SGC in it.

Lowe is still going to have to win me over for this job. Not hating on the guy or anything, but last nights scrimmage can be a fluke at times. Winning at Crockett County will be a good start. Can they do that? I believe they can now. Beating SGC, Hardin, or Lexington will be even better knowing they'll have a shot to at least get a home playoff game. Don't forget that Chester County will be better this year, too.

I don't think the kids had fun playing the game of football under the previous coaching staff. If you attended our game last year, everyone in America knew the 4-5 plays North Side was going to run on offense. They, the coaching staff, never adjusted to anything. If teams did a good job of scouting on film against North Side, it was having a cheat sheet prior to a test.

I haven't talked to all the players, but the ones I've talked to seemed to enjoy having Lowe there. They admit, he is better organizationally. Offense wise, they're going to throw the ball more (they have to). They're going to be fine under year 1 for Lowe. How good? Can't answer that.

  12. Someone posted a picture of the scoreboard at the Reservation and it showed North Side won 34-7. Not going to sit here and overreact to a scrimmage score, that's meaningless. However, I didn't think the Indians would win the game by 27, if true.

The Indians are going to be better than what people expect because the team is going to have the ability to use their skillset on offense. Not saying they're going to win region, but don't pencil this team with an average to below average year just yet. Players deserve to have a good year with what they have been through.

Based on this I'm not sure i would have Riverside and Huntingdon at 1 & 2. Don't think they would be better than Henry Co. or Haywood. Covington, possibly (And i love my Chargers). But i can't be convinced that 1 & 2 are better than Henry or Haywood. No disrespect to Riverside or Huntingdon, great programs, just not their level.

It's not about being "better." To me, it's more about deserving. I do agree with you that Huntingdon and Riverside would lose to Henry County. I can't say that about Haywood because they seem to have some issues going on right now. If it was being "better" Henry County can go 5-5 this year, if they play Huntingdon or Riverside, I may actually lean with Henry County.

Again, that was a Riverside team that went to Chattanooga last year. They had two losses and one of them was by a 1 point. I will say Henry County's schedule is more difficult (obviously because they're playing 5/6A schools). However, it's a fair statement to say Henry County is "better" than Riverside/Huntingdon without being the #1 team because at some point, losses have to matter.

If I were to have a list that BPM will list next week, I would have Riverside at #1, too. But it doesn't mean they're "better" than Henry County.

Is this list based off how far teams are expected to go in their own respective classes?

It was a list mainly based on how teams finished last year. I agree with Riverside being #1. Teams that are listed 2-8 are a tossed up, but I do believe there's a separation between the 8th team and the 9th team. I'm fine with Dyersburg and JCS being at 9 and 10, but I would actually have JCS at 9 instead because I thought they had a better season last year. Not saying JCS will be better than Dyersburg this year. Teams that are 11-15 were just average teams last year and will need some work this year. I wish Odom's list stopped at 10 and not go all the way to 15.

I know they had a coaching change, but leaving USJ off that list was unfair to them. They'll be fine!

That 66 isn’t just at UC. That’s UC, Obion and South Fulton combined. So if you can see that much at Milan, Dyer Co, etc, surely you can see it at 3 schools combined where the total population would be the same or more than the schools you mentioned.

It's a tough pill to swallow knowing they're the only school in that part of West Tennessee that had a significant drop in enrollment. Majority of the schools north of I-40 had either an increase in enrollment, or a small drop (ex. Milan at .06% and West Carrol at .07ish%. However, everyone else in Gibson County and Carroll County went up in enrollment).

If their neighboring schools had a significant decrease in enrollment similar to what Union City had, I don't think anyone would complain, even if they were to drop to 1A as a result. All Jackson public schools experienced a dropped in enrollment in the same percentage or near as Union City, but the cause for that was the addition of JCM. I didn't have a number that JCM had in 2021, but that had around 430 students in this class. So, it's a simple cause and effect for the JMCSS schools.

When it comes to Union City, I can't think of a "cause and effect" of why their enrollment dropped and the neighboring schools didn't. I think that's the reason why, and there's a concern for that. That's all. I'm not trying to fire up a debate, but it's kind of a head scratcher when you look at the schools in West Tennessee geographically, UC is an outlier.

You’re missing the point. Yes, the town has a large population. However, due to a no-zoning rule in Obion County, they are able to dictate their numbers and allow/not allow students for certain reasons. If you don’t benefit the school academically or athletically than you are deferred to another school in the county. I thought this was common knowledge of UC!

So if they don't benefit UC, they'll ship them down to Obion Central? And Obion Central's award is they're the smallest 4A school in the state for the second consecutive classification... They were the smallest 4A school in the 2021-23 cycle, and they're the smallest school again in 4A for this 2023-25 cycle.

What @Sherdog wants to know is this:

South Fulton's enrollment went from 180 students in the previous cycle, to 186 students in the current cycle.

Obion Central's enrollment went from 762 students in the previous cycle, to 751 students in the current cycle.

Union City's enrollment went from 422 students in the previous cycle, to 356 students in the current cycle.

So, where did the 66 students go?
